Though it took to the end of the seven- teenth century for the modem law of nations, based on the idea of state sover- eignty, to be formed, the roots of many of its concepts and institutions can be situated in this period2 . While all this might be true in retrospect, it would be by far overstretching the point to state that the victory of the emerging sovereign state over the medieval system was a foregone conclusion for the politicians and lawyers of * I am greatly indebted to professor James Crawford (Cambridge), professor Karl- Heinz Ziegler (Hamburg) and Mrs. Norah Engmann-Gallagher for their comments and suggestions, as well as to the board and staff of the Lauterpacht Research Centre for Inter- national Law at the University of Cambridge for their hospitality during the period I worked there on this article. -

Since , Brittany was re-established as a Sovereign Duchy with somewhat definite borders, administered by Dukes of Breton houses from to , before falling into the sphere of influence of the Plantagenets and then the Capets. Saint-Brieuc Main article: Duchy of Brittany. In the camp was closed and the French military decided to incorporate the remaining 19, Breton soldiers into the 2nd Army of the Loire. In Vannes , there was an unfavorable attitude towards the Revolution with only of the city's population of 12, accepting the new constitution. Prieur sought to implement the authority of the Convention by arresting suspected counter-revolutionaries, removing the local authorities of Brittany, and making speeches. The rulers of Domnonia such as Conomor sought to expand their territory including holdings in British Devon and Cornwall , claiming overlordship over all Bretons, though there was constant tension between local lords. It is therefore a strategic choice as a case study of some of the processes associated with the emergence of mass tourism, and the effects of this kind of tourism development on local populations. The first unified Duchy of Brittany was founded by Nominoe. This book was the world's first trilingual dictionary, the first Breton dictionary and also the first French dictionary. However, he provides less extensive access to how ordinary Breton inhabitants participated in the making of Breton tourism. And herein lies the central dilemma that Young explores in this impressive, deeply researched study of the development of regional tourism in Brittany. -

Authority, Reputation, and the Roles of Jeanne De Penthièvre in Book I of Froissart's Chroniques Journal of Medieval History
Authority, reputation, and the roles of Jeanne de Penthièvre in Book I of Froissart’s Chroniques Journal of Medieval History (forthcoming 2019: accepted manuscript) Erika Graham-Goering Department of History, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium Abstract: This article examines how a medieval noblewoman’s positive reputation could be framed through different aspects of seigneurial power using a case study of Jeanne de Penthièvre and her war for the duchy of Brittany. Froissart wrote about Jeanne in the three main redactions of the first book of his Chroniques. However, he focused in the Amiens manuscript on her position as an heiress and the object of her followers’ loyalty, while the B text largely reduced her prominence but planted the seeds for the active military role Jeanne assumed in the Rome redaction. Such changes did not move strictly between more- or less- accurate reports, but engaged with different tropes that had also featured in the official portrayals of Jeanne during her lifetime. These parallel constructions of reputation reveal a plasticity to models of lordly authority even in rhetorical contexts more usually associated with formulaic and conventional representations of elite society. Article History: Received 16 May 2018. Accepted 5 July 2018. Keywords: Froissart, chronicle, reputation, rhetoric, Brittany, Jeanne de Penthievre, medieval women, lordship Rehabilitating the reputations of politically-active medieval women has meant that, in the past few decades, a growing body of scholarship has turned a much-needed critical eye to the process by which social mores, political interests, and iconic narratives could combine to create the ‘black legends’ that frequently transformed more-or-less typical noblewomen, and especially queens, into immoral caricatures. -
Christian Allies of the Ottoman Empire by Emrah Safa Gürkan
Christian Allies of the Ottoman Empire by Emrah Safa Gürkan The relationship between the Ottomans and the Christians did not evolve around continuous hostility and conflict, as is generally assumed. The Ottomans employed Christians extensively, used Western know-how and technology, and en- couraged European merchants to trade in the Levant. On the state level, too, what dictated international diplomacy was not the religious factors, but rather rational strategies that were the results of carefully calculated priorities, for in- stance, several alliances between the Ottomans and the Christian states. All this cooperation blurred the cultural bound- aries and facilitated the flow of people, ideas, technologies and goods from one civilization to another. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Introduction 2. Christians in the Service of the Ottomans 3. Ottoman Alliances with the Christian States 4. Conclusion 5. Appendix 1. Sources 2. Bibliography 3. Notes Citation Introduction Cooperation between the Ottomans and various Christian groups and individuals started as early as the beginning of the 14th century, when the Ottoman state itself emerged. The Ottomans, although a Muslim polity, did not hesitate to cooperate with Christians for practical reasons. Nevertheless, the misreading of the Ghaza (Holy War) literature1 and the consequent romanticization of the Ottomans' struggle in carrying the banner of Islam conceal the true nature of rela- tions between Muslims and Christians. Rather than an inevitable conflict, what prevailed was cooperation in which cul- tural, ethnic, and religious boundaries seemed to disappear. Ÿ1 The Ottomans came into contact and allied themselves with Christians on two levels. Firstly, Christian allies of the Ot- tomans were individuals; the Ottomans employed a number of Christians in their service, mostly, but not always, after they had converted. -
Regarding Dethroned Princely Houses and Their Legal Rights
Regarding dethroned princely Houses and their legal rights Reference is made to the decision of the United Court of Bari of the 1st April 1952 in the case of the prosecutor vs. Umberto Zambrini and to the decision of the Tribunal of Pistoia of the 5th June 1964 in the case of the appeal against the penal judgment given against Francesco Mario Paternò Castello having found Prince Francesco Mario Paternò Castello di Carcaci, in his capacity as the last representative of a sovereign dynasty (the Royal House of Aragon), entitled to confer titles of nobility (the Court of Bari), respectively being the heir to the House of Paternò Castello Guttadauro di Emmanuel and legitimate holder of the same family’s rights, including the power of ius honorum which has been preserved by family tradition and which cannot disappear through dethronement (Pistoia). Further reference is made to the decision of the Ordinary Tribunal of Ragusa of the 9th May 2003, in session as an international court of arbitration, in the case between the Higher Institute of Nobiliary Law vs. Francesco Nicola Roberto Paternò Castello di Carcaci. According to the findings of the court of arbitration the following rights belong to Francesco Nicola Roberto Paternò Castello di Carcaci, in his capacity as consanguineous and descendant in a collateral line of the last sovereign of the Royal House of Aragon as his legitimate successor and as pretender to the throne: a) the quality of Royal Highness and Royal Prince of the Royal House of Aragon, Majorca and Sicily; b) the right to designate -

The Fifth Republic - France’S Long Constitutional Walk
Al-Bayan Center for Planning and Studies The Fifth Republic - France’s long constitutional walk By Catherine Shakdam By Catherine Shakdam Copyright © 2018 www.bayancenter.org [email protected] 2 About About Al-Bayan Center for Planning and Studies is an independent, nonprofit think tank based in Baghdad, Iraq. Its primary mission is to offer an authentic perspective on public and foreign policy issues related to Iraq and the region. Al-Bayan Center pursues its vision by conducting independent analysis, as well as proposing workable solutions for complex issues that concern policymakers and academics. 3 The Fifth Republic - France’s long constitutional walk By Catherine Shakdam * If France today can proudly claim to a rich democratic heritage, its walk towards such institutional freedom was not an easy one. Like most of its western counterparts, France’s history - and for the purpose of this research paper, France’s constitutional history started under monarchical absolutism. What is most pertinent to France’s democratic evolution is I believe France’s willingness to adhere to continuity in its political thought as opposed to selective amnesia. If France has suffered through many dark political and institutional spells - trading one republic for a monarchy or parliamentary independence for the military rule of an empire, France built upon its experiences to find its unique voice, and assert its tone. Born as much in its mistakes than it was born into its successes, France has maintained throughout its growing pains several constants - or maybe singularities, depending how one chooses to look at it. The Fifth Republic was adopted on 4 October 1958, the product of France’s constitutional thought and its socio-political history. -
