Railroad Collection Finding Aid (PDF) University of Missouri-Kansas City Dr. Kenneth J. LaBudde Department of Special Collections NOT TO BE USED FOR PUBLICATION SCOPE AND CONTENT The Railroad Collection was assembled by LaBudde Special Collections at the Miller Nichols Library, University of Missouri-Kansas City, from various donations over a number of years. The collection contains over 150 certificates from various railroad companies including Union Depot Horse Railroad Company; Canada Southern; Chicago & Canada Southern Railway Company; Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railroad Company; and Detroit, Monroe & Toledo Railroad Company. Also held in the collection are weekly reports; railroad time cards; company rules and invitations. At the close of the year our member­ ship had grown to approaching 1,50C. pretty good for an organization that had 97 members in 1959...but this year we’ll shoot for 1,600. It’ll take a lot of work, and you’ll have to help, but you always have, so we should make it. Telescope production last year produced a total of 244 pages, and in addition to that we produced the FITZGERALD book with 60 pages. For the uninitiated, this means your Editor typed, then Varityped 608 pages. This much production takes a lot of time, but we are going to do something about it, and we’ll have an announcement to make perhaps as early as the next issue. Not only will what we have planned result in far less work to getting Telescope out, but it will produce a far better product. Yes, 1977 was a good year...but 1978 looks better. Some of these files, such as the New York Central or the Pennsylvania Railroad are very big themselves. The publications of the United States Geological Survey are issued in accordance with the statute, approved March 3, 1879, which declares that "The publications of the Geological Survey shall consist of the annual report of operations, geological and economic maps illustrating the resources and classifications of the lands, and Reports upon general and economic geology and paleontology. The annual report of operations of th^e Geological Survey shall accompany the annual report of the Secretary of the Interior. All special memoirs and reports of said Survey shall he issued in uniform quarto series if deemed necessary by the Director, but other­ wise in ordinary octavos. Three thousand copies of each shall be published for scientific exchanges and for sale at the price of publication; and all literary and cartographic materials receivt?d in exchange shall be the property of the United States and form a part of the library of the organization. And the money resulting from the sale of such publications shall be covered into the Treasury of the United States." ANNUAL REPORTS. From the above it will he seen that only the Annual Reports, which form parts of the reports of the Secretary of the Interior and are printed as executive documents, are available for gratuitous dis­ tribution. A number of these are furnished the Survey for its exchange list, but the bulk of them are supplied directly, through the document rooms of Congress, to members of the Senate and House.
