GIRLS AND BOYS PENTATHLON Due to athletes wishing to qualify for New Balance in the multi-events, we have introduced a Pentathlon so that they can achieve these marks. With many athletes not having the opportunity to compete in this event very often, we have instituted the following qualification procedures and parameters. • EVENT IS CAPPED AT 12 COMPETITORS - FIRST COME-FIRST SERVED • ENTRY FEE IS $50 Per Athlete. This does not cover individual events. Only Pentathlon. • Entry Fees must be paid at packet pickup to receive a packet. No Online Payment. • 10 SPOTS WILL BE RESERVED FOR THE FIRST 10 AUTOMATIC QUALIFIERS WHO REGISTER IF YOU PARTICIPATED IN THE FOLLOWING EVENTS: o 2019 Your State High School Championships Heptathlon/Decathlon (any class) o 2019 AAU/USATF Junior Olympics Heptathlon/Decathlon o 2019 NBIN Nationals Pentathlon or NBON Nationals Heptathlon/Decathlon • The final 2 spots will be reserved for the highest point scorers who did not receive one of the first 10 spots. This allows competitors who have not completed a pentathlon/decathlon or were not one of the first 10 to qualify automatically. They will be ranked by the standard decathlon scoring tables across the events available in the Pentathlon. For instance, an athlete has only competed in the Shot Put and the 60m Hurdles but not the High Jump/Long Jump or 1000m. They can use those two events to gain a point total. We will rank all those athletes point totals and select the top 2 competitors by point total (or more if less than 10 automatically would qualify).

He has also said: “Every man who can perform such a competition is a great athlete no matter if he is winning or not”. These words have inspired many modern pentathlon athletes over the years to try and show their best at modern pentathlon competitions. As well, these words have inspired many coaches to help those athletes to achieve their personal goals

  • Modern Pentathlon
Modern Pentathlon The roots of Modern Pentathlon can be traced to the ancient Pentathlon, which included the following five disciplines: discus throw, javelin, long jump, the stadium-length race, and wrestling. The ancient Pentathlon was incorporated into the ancient Olympic Games in 708 B.C., where Lambis Lakedaimonios was crowned the first Olympic victor. Pierre de Coubertin wished to include a combined sport into the programme of the modern Olympic Games, which would highlight the prototype of the multi- faceted “super athlete”, someone who combines strength, technique and a strong personality. Inspired by the ancient Pentathlon, he created the Modern pentathlon, a sport that combines technical disciplines such as Shooting, Fencing and Riding, together with strength and endurance disciplines like Swimming and Cross-country running. The choice of these sports was based on the legend of a warrior who, having to convey a message to the rear of the fighting forces, had to battle on horseback with his pistol and sword. However, because his horse was killed in the process, he had to swim and run to complete his mission. Description The combination of five completely different sports constitutes Modern Pentathlon, the most demanding sport of the Olympic Games. Pentathletes compete in the course of one day, in the following five disciplines: Shooting, Fencing, Swimming, Riding, and Cross-country running. Modern Pentathlon men and women athletes need to have strength, endurance, quick reflexes and concentration, in order to meet the high demands of the sport. Plato understandably made the following statement: “The philosopher lacks in specialised sciences but is good in all other social functions and expressions, and that is why he is the best among the educated, as is the pentathlete the best amongst all other athletes”.

The games were held on an official basis every four years from 776 BC, but they probably originated much earlier. Greek myth credited the hero Herakles with devising the running races at Olympia to celebrate the completion of one of his twelve labours. Olympia was the most important sanctuary of the god Zeus, and the Games were held in his honour. Sacrifices and gifts were offered, and athletes took oaths to obey the rules before a statue of Zeus. The games were announced by heralds travelling to all the major Greek cities around the Mediterranean, and hostilities were banned during the period around the Games to safeguard those travelling to and from Olympia. The games at Olympia continued with minor interruptions into early Christian times and were the inspiration for the modern Olympic Games, first staged in Athens in 1896. 2 Archaeology at Olympia Over the centuries the river Alpheios, to the south of the sanctuary, folded and swept away the hippodrome, and the river Kladeios to the west destroyed part of the gymnasium. Following earthquakes and storms, a layer of silt was deposited over the entire site. Olympia lay unnoticed until modern times when an Englishman, Richard Chandler, rediscovered it in 1766.

1968 U.S. Olympic Team Oral History Project: Transcript of Interview Interviewer: Thomas Hunt Narrator: Colonel Jim Moore, 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games, Modern Pentathlon Interview Date: February 7, 2011 Transcription: March 3, 2011 begin recording [Thomas Hunt:] As we start, I had a few, sort of, just entry biographical questions and we wanted to get a sense for how you got involved first in the modern pentathlon and where you grew up and things like that. And I should say that this interview is to get as much information as we can about your vision for the legacy of the 1968 Games and what they mean to you. So I am going to be silent as much as possible so that you can talk as much as possible, if that makes sense? [Jim Moore:] (laughs) Okay. [TH:] So anyway, how did you get involved in the modern pentathlon? [JM:] Well, it’s a sport not too many people know about and I had followed the Olympics as a child and I didn’t know anything about it. I went to University of Pittsburgh on a track scholarship. I had to take ROTC because in 1953 the draft was on and I could be drafted. So I took ROTC because of my scholarship. They didn’t want to train me for a couple of years and then I would be drafted out. So I received a commission upon graduation. Went to Germany as an Army Cav officer in 1957 and the Cold War was pretty hot then. I was on border duty and qualifying tankers at Grafenwoehr and I said, There’s got to be a better way than this.
