The fencing ranking round take place on the first day. The final day consists of the following phases: swimming, fencing bonus round, riding and laser run. Athletes achieve points in each phase according to their performance. The points from each modern pentathlon phase are cumulative. The final ranking is decided by the number of modern pentathlon points scored in all phases. In the last phase, the laser-run, the athletes will start with a handicap time based on the conversion of the total modern pentathlon points (cumulative points after riding phase) into time (1 MP point = one second). This means that the final ranking corresponds to the finishing order in the laser run, which means that the athlete who crosses the finish line first wins the gold medal. FENCING RANKING ROUND The fencing ranking round is organised as a round robin. Each athlete will fence against all other athletes with an electric epee in a round robin system. The target area is the whole body and one hit earns a win. The fencing athletes will receive points according to the number of victories achieved with the penalty points deducted. The number of points for each victory depends on the number of athletes competing, according to International Modern Pentathlon Federation (UIPM) rules. All athletes will be ranked according to the following criteria: number of points achieved in the ranking round, then number of victories. All athletes will be drawn into pairs of two athletes, from a single NOC or mixed NOCs. The draw for the fencing pairs and assignment of the pistes for each event will be made by the technical delegate before the technical meeting for both events. The fencing team rounds will take place on nine pistes (plus one reserve piste). The ranking round final standings will be used to determine the start list for the fencing bonus round. SWIMMING The swimming phase is a 200m freestyle race. Athletes will be seeded into one of the heats according to their best PWR swimming time in the last 12 months (25m pool). The start list for the swimming phase of the individual events will be prepared before the technical meeting. MPN------------------------------ _02A Report Created THU 1 JUL 2021 09:30 Page 1 of 5 Modern Pentathlon 近代五種 / Pentathlon moderne FENCING BONUS ROUND A single fencing piste will be used for the fencing bonus round. Each bout is for one hit in 30 seconds. The athletes will be placed according to their position from the ranking round. The competition will be carried out in reverse order, with the last-placed athlete fencing first against the next-placed athlete. The winner of each bout will be matched against the next best-ranked athlete. In this way, an athlete may continue to advance as long as they continue to win bouts. RIDING The athletes ride unfamiliar horses over 12 show-jumping obstacles (15 jumps). Jumps are up to 120cm in height and 130cm in spread, and include one double and one triple. The riding course is between 400-450m in length. Athletes pick their horses by draw and have 20 minutes and five practice jumps for warm-up. The start order is the reverse of the rank after the previous events. Athletes who are eliminated in riding can still compete in the laser run. LASER RUN The athlete with the most MP points after three phases starts first at the start signal (0'00") and will shoot at station No.1 in the laser-run. The remaining athletes start with time handicaps (one second for every one MP point behind the leader after three phases). A pack start may be used for athletes who have a handicap time over a certain time e.g. two minutes, with calculation of final results after the finish. This handicap start means that the final ranking corresponds to the finishing order in the laser run. The laser run consists of a 3200m run and four shooting series. Each shooting series consists of clearing five electronic laser precision targets using a laser pistol. Each shooting series is limited to 50 seconds. The course is composed of: 20m run; first shooting; 800m run; second shooting; 800m run; third shooting; 800m run; fourth shooting; 800m run to the finish. The athletes will be ranked according to their arrival at the finish line. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE UIPM PENTATHLON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AND THE OLYMPIC GAMES The following events are on the programme of a UIPM Pentathlon World Championships: individual competition, team competition and relay competition for men and women, and mixed relay. Due to the number of the participants in the individual competition (more than 36 athletes) there is a qualification round for the final. The final has the same format as the Olympic Games with 36 athletes. CHANGES SINCE THE RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES Swimming phase: one MP point is added or deducted for every half a second faster or slower than the set time (was one MP point per third of a second). Fencing bonus round: The length of each bout has been changed to 30 seconds (was 45 seconds). Riding phase: Course length will be 400-450m (previously 350-400m). If an athlete in the first round of riding has two falls, the athlete scheduled to ride the same horse in the second round can draw a reserve horse. MPN------------------------------ _02A Report Created THU 1 JUL 2021 09:30 Page 2 of 5 Modern Pentathlon 近代五種 / Pentathlon moderne Combined event: The phase name has been changed to "laser run." SPORT RULES AND PROCEDURES FENCING RANKING ROUND The 36 athletes each take part in 35 bouts. A total score of 70 per cent victories (25 bouts) equals 250 MP points. Each extra victory adds six MP points and each extra defeat deducts six MP points. If an athlete fails to score any victories in the ranking round, they will score zero MP points. SWIMMING A time of two minutes and 30 seconds earns 250 MP points. One MP point is added or deducted for every half a second faster or slower than this time. A false start in swimming is given 10 penalty points. FENCING BONUS ROUND The points achieved by the athletes in the ranking round (round robin) are carried over to the bonus round. Athletes do not lose points if they are defeated but their fencing phase is over. In the case of a double defeat, the winner of the bout is the athlete placed higher on the start list. The bout winner receives one bonus MP point for each bout that they win. If the winner of the ranking round wins their bout in the bonus round, they receive two bonus points. The penalty for a red card offence is one MP point. Any pentathlete that does not start or withdraws for any reason during the bonus round will be eliminated from the fencing phase and will score zero points in ranking and bonus rounds. An athlete who is eliminated, withdrawn or disqualified will receive zero fencing MP points and will be placed at the bottom of the ranking. RIDING A clear round in the time allowed earns the athlete 300 MP points. All penalty points are deducted from this amount. Time allowed and time limit depend on the length of the course and arena size. LASER RUN An athlete earns 500 MP points for a time of 13 minutes and 20 seconds. One MP point is added or deducted for every one second faster or slower than this time. Event tiebreak rules If there is a tie between two or more athletes after two, three or four phases (and placings cannot be determined by laser-run photo-finish), the athlete with the best result in the last phase will be ranked in the higher position. If the tie remains, the athlete with the best result in the previous phase will be ranked in the higher position, and so on. If the tie cannot be broken, the athlete with the higher Pentathlon World Ranking (PWR) will be ranked higher. MPN------------------------------ _02A Report Created THU 1 JUL 2021 09:30 Page 3 of 5 Modern Pentathlon 近代五種 / Pentathlon moderne Phase tiebreak rules If two or more athletes are tied during or after any phase and the tie cannot be broken by their score (see special phase rules below), they should share the same rank.

GIRLS AND BOYS PENTATHLON Due to athletes wishing to qualify for New Balance in the multi-events, we have introduced a Pentathlon so that they can achieve these marks. With many athletes not having the opportunity to compete in this event very often, we have instituted the following qualification procedures and parameters. • EVENT IS CAPPED AT 12 COMPETITORS - FIRST COME-FIRST SERVED • ENTRY FEE IS $50 Per Athlete. This does not cover individual events. Only Pentathlon. • Entry Fees must be paid at packet pickup to receive a packet. No Online Payment. • 10 SPOTS WILL BE RESERVED FOR THE FIRST 10 AUTOMATIC QUALIFIERS WHO REGISTER IF YOU PARTICIPATED IN THE FOLLOWING EVENTS: o 2019 Your State High School Championships Heptathlon/Decathlon (any class) o 2019 AAU/USATF Junior Olympics Heptathlon/Decathlon o 2019 NBIN Nationals Pentathlon or NBON Nationals Heptathlon/Decathlon • The final 2 spots will be reserved for the highest point scorers who did not receive one of the first 10 spots. This allows competitors who have not completed a pentathlon/decathlon or were not one of the first 10 to qualify automatically. They will be ranked by the standard decathlon scoring tables across the events available in the Pentathlon. For instance, an athlete has only competed in the Shot Put and the 60m Hurdles but not the High Jump/Long Jump or 1000m. They can use those two events to gain a point total. We will rank all those athletes point totals and select the top 2 competitors by point total (or more if less than 10 automatically would qualify).

He has also said: “Every man who can perform such a competition is a great athlete no matter if he is winning or not”. These words have inspired many modern pentathlon athletes over the years to try and show their best at modern pentathlon competitions. As well, these words have inspired many coaches to help those athletes to achieve their personal goals

  • Modern Pentathlon
Modern Pentathlon The roots of Modern Pentathlon can be traced to the ancient Pentathlon, which included the following five disciplines: discus throw, javelin, long jump, the stadium-length race, and wrestling. The ancient Pentathlon was incorporated into the ancient Olympic Games in 708 B.C., where Lambis Lakedaimonios was crowned the first Olympic victor. Pierre de Coubertin wished to include a combined sport into the programme of the modern Olympic Games, which would highlight the prototype of the multi- faceted “super athlete”, someone who combines strength, technique and a strong personality. Inspired by the ancient Pentathlon, he created the Modern pentathlon, a sport that combines technical disciplines such as Shooting, Fencing and Riding, together with strength and endurance disciplines like Swimming and Cross-country running. The choice of these sports was based on the legend of a warrior who, having to convey a message to the rear of the fighting forces, had to battle on horseback with his pistol and sword. However, because his horse was killed in the process, he had to swim and run to complete his mission. Description The combination of five completely different sports constitutes Modern Pentathlon, the most demanding sport of the Olympic Games. Pentathletes compete in the course of one day, in the following five disciplines: Shooting, Fencing, Swimming, Riding, and Cross-country running. Modern Pentathlon men and women athletes need to have strength, endurance, quick reflexes and concentration, in order to meet the high demands of the sport. Plato understandably made the following statement: “The philosopher lacks in specialised sciences but is good in all other social functions and expressions, and that is why he is the best among the educated, as is the pentathlete the best amongst all other athletes”.

The games were held on an official basis every four years from 776 BC, but they probably originated much earlier. Greek myth credited the hero Herakles with devising the running races at Olympia to celebrate the completion of one of his twelve labours. Olympia was the most important sanctuary of the god Zeus, and the Games were held in his honour. Sacrifices and gifts were offered, and athletes took oaths to obey the rules before a statue of Zeus. The games were announced by heralds travelling to all the major Greek cities around the Mediterranean, and hostilities were banned during the period around the Games to safeguard those travelling to and from Olympia. The games at Olympia continued with minor interruptions into early Christian times and were the inspiration for the modern Olympic Games, first staged in Athens in 1896. 2 Archaeology at Olympia Over the centuries the river Alpheios, to the south of the sanctuary, folded and swept away the hippodrome, and the river Kladeios to the west destroyed part of the gymnasium. Following earthquakes and storms, a layer of silt was deposited over the entire site. Olympia lay unnoticed until modern times when an Englishman, Richard Chandler, rediscovered it in 1766.

1968 U.S. Olympic Team Oral History Project: Transcript of Interview Interviewer: Thomas Hunt Narrator: Colonel Jim Moore, 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games, Modern Pentathlon Interview Date: February 7, 2011 Transcription: March 3, 2011 begin recording [Thomas Hunt:] As we start, I had a few, sort of, just entry biographical questions and we wanted to get a sense for how you got involved first in the modern pentathlon and where you grew up and things like that. And I should say that this interview is to get as much information as we can about your vision for the legacy of the 1968 Games and what they mean to you. So I am going to be silent as much as possible so that you can talk as much as possible, if that makes sense? [Jim Moore:] (laughs) Okay. [TH:] So anyway, how did you get involved in the modern pentathlon? [JM:] Well, it’s a sport not too many people know about and I had followed the Olympics as a child and I didn’t know anything about it. I went to University of Pittsburgh on a track scholarship. I had to take ROTC because in 1953 the draft was on and I could be drafted. So I took ROTC because of my scholarship. They didn’t want to train me for a couple of years and then I would be drafted out. So I received a commission upon graduation. Went to Germany as an Army Cav officer in 1957 and the Cold War was pretty hot then. I was on border duty and qualifying tankers at Grafenwoehr and I said, There’s got to be a better way than this.
