Abstract: Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl again. With this formula it seems that romantic comedies are actually meant for men instead of women. If this is the case, then why do women watch these films? The repetition of female stars like Katharine Hepburn, Doris Day and Meg Ryan in romantic comedies allows audiences to find elements of truth in their characters as they grapple with the input of others in their life choices, combat the anxiety of being single, and prove they are less sexually naïve than society would like to admit.

Prof. (English) KG Arts & Science College Raigarh, Chhatisgarh India Abstract Thanks to our drama professor who initiated us to the sheer joy of reading the high flown language and acting in Shakespeare‟s plays that eventually left us spellbound for life. Watching Shakespeare‟s plays in theatre for the yester year English educated Indians has been a hobby. This infatuation with the greatest dramatist has led some Film directors to experiment on the themes of comedies and tragedies. In recent years, director Vishal Bhardwaj holds the credit of adapting themes of his great tragedies to contemporary situation and work wonder through his experimentation. Maqbool is a 2003 Indian crime drama, an adaptation of the play Macbeth. The film had its North American premiere at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival and was screened in the Marché du Film section of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Bhardwaj then moved on to adapt Othello in his 2006 film Omkara which won him commercial as well as critical success and Francis Ford Coppola's attention. Haider is the third installment of Bhardwaj's Shakespearean trilogy. The film is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir during conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. The film was screened at the 19th Busan International Film Festival and released worldwide on 2 October 2014 to wide critical acclaim, and garnered attention from the media due to its controversial subject matter. The present paper intends to study how the movies inspired by Shakespeare still appeal 21st century audience to concur his universality in changing times.

    Romantic Comedies Through the Ages (History and Commentary) Why do audiences love a good romantic comedy? Are we all just hopeless romantics at heart? We just want to see the underdog guy get the girl and live happily ever after? It’s hard to say exactly why, but romantic comedies have had a long history of entertaining audiences. Whether in the theatres, opera houses, cinemas or just on your couch, audiences have had a history of laughing (and perhaps crying a bit too!) along with trials and tribulations of people falling in love. Consider the idea of romantic comedies on the Elizabethan stage. While the words “romantic” and “comedy” may not have been put together in Shakespeare’s days, all of his comedies are defined by the prevalent theme of love. Mistaken identities, twists and turns abound in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, All’s Well That Ends Well and As You Like It (just to name a few). Often the humor also focuses on a battle of wits between the sexes (Much Ado About Nothing and The Taming of the Shrew, for example). While the humor may not be seen throughout the entirety of the story (I don’t think anyone laughs when Hero is condemned to death by her father in Much Ado About Nothing), the main lovers work their way through the complications to find their way to each other in the end. The musical stage has also been keen on the idea of romantic comedy over the years. Italian comic opera – opera buffa – tended to be light and romantic in themes.

The paper considers gender-colored neologisms of the space of cinematic discourse, classified on a semantic basis into neologisms that characterize genres of cinema, participants of cinematic discourse (filmmakers, viewers, actors), the process of creating a film. The research material was the neological units of cinematic discourse with a gender component which were taken from modern English-language online dictionaries, guides, glossaries, social news sites. The paper gives definitions of such notions as “neologism”, “cinematic discourse” and also identifies “distorted” and “fair” gender stereotypes in the composition of the definitions and contextual field of the neologisms under consideration. The presence of a rather large stratum of new terms related to the considered groups which include a gender component indicate the connection between cultural and linguistic aspects of life: new words reflect the changing realities, preferences of people and the relationship of old language forms with new concepts and ideas. Neologisms under study are grouped by gender opposition if there are similar neologisms in meaning but different in gender. Synonymous rows of some gender-coloured neologisms that characterize a certain gender and do not have a “gender opposite” are given.
