NEREY-THESIS-2020.Pdf (4.097Mb)
Mayanizing Modernity by Victoria Anne Nerey A thesis submitted to the School of Art, Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Art History Chair of Committee: Dr. Rex Koontz Committee Member: Dr. Roberto Tejada Committee Member: Dr. Dorota Biczel University of Houston May 2020 Copyright 2020, Victoria Anne Nerey DEDICATION To my mother who has unconditionally supported me every step of the way. And to my lifelong friend Ruthie Burkhalter for providing the much-needed comic relief during the stressful moments of graduate studies. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis could not have been completed without the support of the Art History department and my wonderful committee. I have been a student in the University’s Art History department for almost four years and the faculty has been instrumental in my growth as a scholar throughout my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I am extraordinarily grateful to each of my committee members Dr. Rex Koontz, Dr. Roberto Tejada, and Dr. Dorota Biczel for pushing me to become a better scholar and produce a manuscript that I am proud to have written, especially with the unexpected circumstances of my final semester. Their unwavering support has facilitated many opportunities including scholarships, grants, and fellowships that have supported my academic and professional growth. Dr. Biczel has encouraged and challenged my understanding of feminist and Latin American literature. I am incredibly thankful for her commitment to the success of her students and for her wonderful advice throughout this process. Dr. Tejada has been my professor throughout my undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University. -
