  • The Ro Y Al Regiment Sc Otl
THE ROYAL REGIMENT OF SCOTLAND (SCOTS) MARCHES, TUNES MARCHES, TUNES REGIMENT REGIMENT AND SONGS AND SONGS AL AL introduction Towards the end of the 16th Century drums and fifes became a recognised part of the military establishment. All Captains were required to have drummers and fifers in their companies. One of their duties was to ensure that all soldiers in the company recognised their company march. In Scotland the bagpipes had for centuries been the mainstay of martial music, particularly in the Highlands. Contemporary reports from the 1630’s mention a pipe band in Hepburn’s Regiment of 36 musicians and refer to “The Scottish March” believed to be the forerunner of Dumbarton’s Drums. Throughout history there are many examples of military musicians raising the morale of fighting troops at critical moments in battle. Piper George Findlater on the North West unes and Songs Frontier of Afghanistan in 1897, Bugle Major John Shaul in South Africa in 1899 and Piper Daniel Laidlaw at the battle of Loos on the Western Front in 1915, all of whom were awarded the Victoria Cross. Indeed up to the beginning of the 20th century musical instruments such as drums, bugles and bagpipes were used to pass commands and orders during battle. Soldiers have a rich history of writing and singing songs to raise morale and to foster a unit identity distinct from other regiments. This publication is intended to list those marches, tunes, calls and songs relevant to the battalions of The Royal Regiment of Scotland. It also lays down the routine and ceremonial dress worn by pipers, drummers and bandsmen of Pipes and Drums and Military Bands within the Regiment.

  • General Military Regiments of Foot. a Historical Record of All the Foot
www.GetPedia.com Also by H. L. Wickes REGIMENTS OF HORSE H.L. WICKES Regiments of Foot A historical record of all the foot regiments of the British Army OSPREY This book is dedicated to the memory of my eldest son, the late Captain Christopher Wickes, R.E. Published in 1974 by Osprey Publishing Ltd., 137 Southampton Street Reading, Berkshire © Copyright 1974 H. L. Wickes All rights reserved Printed in Great Britain by The Camelot Press Ltd, Southampton ISBN o 85045 220 1 PREFACE In no way does this small book claim to be a history of the British Army: such a subject would necessitate many large volumes. Nor does it comprise a complete record of the memorable battles and campaigns in which the various regiments have been engaged. Rather, it is in the nature of a search for an answer to the question, 'What became of the regiments of foot?' The last few years have seen the disappearance of many famous regiments, due to amalgamations and the formation of new 'large' regiments. I have endeavoured here to give a brief history of each of the numbered regiments, from its initial establishment to the present-day formation, touching in each case on its origins, traditions, service record and, where appropriate, its most famous engagements. It is said that battles are the punctuation marks of a regiment's history. Up to about 1750, a regiment when raised was usually named after some royal personage or after the commanding officer. It was in 1743 that the rank or number of regiments was first confirmed by Royal Warrant.

  • Artists Index (PDF)
1 Artist Index Where dates are given for an artist’s first and last record, these dates refer only to material of a Scottish nature. A + sign after the date of a Last Record indicates that the artist continued to record after 1960. The prefixes Mc and Mac were used indiscriminately, so do search both sections. Some singers were described on different record labels under two (or more) categories, i.e. tenor or baritone, baritone or bass, soprano or mezzo soprano, and so on.. The performance description “Reference entry only” means that the compiler is aware of the artist’s existence but feels they have no place in this discography. OF KILKERRAN RECORDS OF THE CLAN AND NAME OF FERGUSSON FERGUSON AND FERGUS SUPPLEMENT Edited for The Clan Fergus(s)on Society by JAMES FERGUSON AND ROBERT MENZIES FERGUSSON EDINBURGH: DAVID DOUGLAS 10 CASTLE STREET 189 9 All rights reserved PREFATORY NOTE After the publication of the Records of the Clan and Name of Fergusson, Ferguson, and Fergus in 1895, the Editors received a number of communications from persons of the name resident in Canada, the United States, and elsewhere. There also reached them a considerable amount of additional information, illustrating the earlier history of the Clan, and indicating the common orisrin of various families. The discovery of papers at Pitfour a year after the book came out was followed by the appearance of His Grace the Duke of Atholl's Chronicles of the Families of Atholl and Tidliebardine, which gives many interesting particulars about the Clan in Athole, while the Editors have been placed in communication with the representa- tives of other families, who had been unaware of, or omitted to contribute to the original volume. Ultimately in the spring of 1898 the Clan Fergusson Society authorised the preparation and publication of the present supplemen- tary volume.
