REPLICAS of a Russian frigate from 1703 and a merchant vessel sunk in 1745 leaded a fleet of some 50 tall ships into Amsterdam yesterday for what organisers say is Europe's biggest nautical event.

The tall ships - large vessels with multiple masts and rigged sails - will sail from the port of Ijmuiden on the Dutch west coast inland to Amsterdam via the North Sea Canal on Thursday morning. 'Tall ships from dozens of countries arrived and are taking part' in Sail Amsterdam 2010, event spokeswoman Lucette Bruinsma told AFP. They had left the English port of Hartlepool on August 11 to join the North Sea Tall Ships Regatta on their way to the Netherlands. The tall ships, the showstoppers of Sail 2010, were accompanied by more than 500 other ships from the Dutch sailing heritage fleet, modern ships, a navy submarine, minehunter and frigate, and thousands of boats for Thursday's voyage to Amsterdam's Ij-harbour, where they will form a floating exhibition until next Monday.

The five-yearly event is expected to draw up to two million spectators over five days. 'This is the biggest nautical event in Europe,' said Bruinsma, adding the last edition, in 2005, had attracted 1.8 million visitors.

One of the main attractions in this year's event is the frigate Shtandart, an exact copy of the Russian Navy's first-ever ship designed by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703. Also in the fleet will be the Gotheborg, one of the largest full-rigged wooden sailing ships in the world. It is a replica of a merchant vessel that sank off Gothenburg, Sweden, in September 1745, fully laden with tea, porcelain, silk and spices after a voyage to China, according to a statement. The Jan Schaefer bridge over the IJ-harbour has been dismantled, as it was designed to do, to allow the tall ships to pass through for the event, said Bruinsma.

Sail 2010 is freely open to visitors – the tall ships will be on display around the Ijhaven on the waterfront Amsterdam side (just east of central station) and on Java Island. The main walking route coincides closely to our self guided walk to Java island (except that you would stick to the waterfront edge).

Note that Sail Amsterdam attracts large crowds so get there early in the day.

Amsterdam North will also have a tall-ship display – you can jump on one of the free GVB ferries from behind the station that shuttle between both sides.

Food and market stalls will be at various places. Things to do/see: Tours of the tall ships will be possible; sailing races will take place on the Ij; sailing lessons for kids; musical and dance events; exhibitions.

A firework display on the water will be held every evening.

Evergreen Marine gets profit of $129 million in Q2 2010 Evergreen Marine, operator of the world's fourth-largest container carrier by capacity, swung to a profit of $129 million in the second quarter ended June 30 from $62.2 million loss a year earlier.

It reported a first half profit of $126.3 million, compared to a $147.6 million loss in 2009's first half, at the depths of the global trade and economic recession. Revenue in the half jumped 11.4 percent to $269 million.

The figures, posted on the Web site of the Taiwan Stock Exchange Monday evening, are non-consolidated results for Evergreen Marine and are not the consolidated figures for Evergreen Line.

Both companies are part of Taiwan's Evergreen Group, which in July ordered its first new container vessels after years of resisting taking on additional capacity. The first of those ten 8,000-TEUs ships are scheduled for delivery in 2012.

Evergreen Line's current fleet comprises 163 ships totaling 614,143 TEUs, according to Paris-based ship broker and analyst AXS-Alphaliner. That places it fourth on AXS-Alphaliner's ranking of Top 100 Container Ship Operators, behind Maersk Line, Mediterranean Shipping Co. and CMA CGM. Source: Joc.com

Maersk ups 2010 outlook after H1 beats forecast Danish shipping and oil group A.P. Moller-Maersk posted a rebound to higher-than-expected half-year profits on the back of a recovery in freight rates and volumes and lifted its 2010 outlook. The group, which includes the world's biggest container shipping company Maersk Line, posted a net profit of 13.4 billion Danish crowns ($2.3 billion) for the first six months of 2010, against a loss of 3.67 billion a year earlier.

The result for Denmark's biggest company beat all forecasts in a Reuters poll of analysts, where the average expectation was for a net profit of 9.12 billion crowns. "Overall expectations for the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group are that the result for 2010 will exceed $4 billion," the group said in a statement on Wednesday, upgrading its outlook from last month that the result would exceed the 2008 level of $3.5 billion.

Shares in A.P. Moller-Maersk closed at 49,000 crowns on Monday, valuing the group at about $36.7 billion. Trade on the Copenhagen bourse resumes at 0700 GMT. Source: uk.reuters

Suspect ship seen before Japan tanker blast The radar of a Japanese supertanker that was damaged by an explosion near the Strait of Hormuz last month showed a small ship making suspicious movements near it at the time of the incident, Japanese public broadcaster NHK said on Tuesday. Checks of the radar showed the suspicious ship left the area at high speed immediately afterwards, NHK said. The explosion, shortly after midnight on July 28, injured one seaman but caused no oil spill or disruption to shipping in the strategic waterway.

NHK said Japan's Transport Ministry believes there is a possibility the small ship launched an attack. A militant group called Abdullah Azzam Brigades, linked to al Qaeda, claimed on August 4 that a suicide bomber belonging to it had attacked the tanker.

Security analysts were skeptical of the group's claim, though the United Arab Emirates state news agency said investigators had found traces of explosives on the tanker. The 333-meter-long very large crude carrier, named M.Star and operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, sustained damage to its hull but was able to resume its voyage to Japan after repairs at a nearby port. A Transport Ministry official in Tokyo said it was checking the report, while Mitsui O.S.K. declined to comment.

Industry sources said the tanker was carrying more than 2 million barrels of Qatar Land and Abu Dhabi Lower Zakum crudes, equivalent to about half of Japan's daily oil needs. Source : Zeenews

Shipping company wants armed guards The Norwegian shipping company Odfjell SE has applied to the authorities for permission to arm members of the crew and hire armed guards for their ships when sailing through pirate waters. In a letter to police authorities in and Singapore Odfjell asks permission to keep weapons on board their vessels, newspaper Dagbladet writes. - We are considering all measures that can protect out people and our ships against the ongoing piracy attacks, says Jan Didrik Lorentz in Odfjell SE. If this problem is not addressed in a proper manner on national and international level, we might see cases of unauthorized use of weapons, Odfjell writes in the letter.

Odfjell‟s chemical tanker “Bow Saga” was attacked by pirates outside Somalia in the beginning of August. Shots were fired but none of the crew was injured and the ship only suffered superficial damages, Odfjell‟s web site reads. In principle it is illegal to carry weapons on Norwegian vessels or to hire armed guards, but on January 1st 2011 a new law on security activity comes to force, which might change the state of the law, Dagbladet writes. The crude oil tanker market displayed mixed patterns in July. VLCC and Suezmax spot freight rates experienced significant declines, VLCC freight rates dropped by 33.2% m-o-m in July, while Suezmax rates fell by 21%, according to OPEC‟s latest Monthly Oil Market Report that covers the month of July. In contrast, Aframax spot freight rates increased 1.3% m-o-m. The tanker market was impacted by a significant rise in tonnage due to the release of vessels that were previously tied for floating storage The VLCC market was very active in the first half of July, contrasting with the lack of movement in the last two weeks of the month. In July, the high cost of floating storage freed a large number of vessels that were available in the market, pushing freight rates down. Consequently, year–to-date, July has seen the lowest level for freight rates. Middle East eastbound rates decreased 39.6% m-o-m to an average of WS58, while westbound rates fell 28.6% in the month to WS45. The downward trend remained for the whole month with owners accepting rates at or below operating cost at the end of the month. VLCCs freight rates also decreased in the West Africa eastbound liftings as a result of high tonnage availability.

Suezmax rates were moderately low, partly due to the lack of inquiry for Suezmaxes in the last half of the month, as well as a consequence of increasing US crude oil stocks and due to the spillover effect in the VLCC market. West Africa to US Gulf Coast freight rates decreased 21.4% m-o-m and West Africa to US East Coast and US Gulf Coast rates also fell by 20.6%. Aframax freight rates were slightly higher by 1.3%, increasing only 1 point to WS117. Aframaxes from to east experienced a decline of 5.1% on their freight rates and Mediterranean/Mediterranean routes rates dropped by 1.8%, partly led by high tonnage availability. Caribbean to US East Coast freight rates increased 6% m-o- m and Mediterranean to Northwest Europe grew 5.9%, led by active market movement, especially at the beginning of the month when eastern markets started to increase their crude oil inventories, preparing for the end of the season. According to preliminary data, both OPEC and Middle East sailings increased 0.6% in July. Growth in OPEC sailings resulted in a 19-month high of 23.7 mb/d, while Middle East deliveries reached a 21-month high of 17.57 mb/d. The increase of deliveries in both regions reflects rising demand at the end of the season. OPEC and Middle East sailings are expected to decrease in August. On the arrivals side, Europe and Far East arrivals rose 9.5% and 2.9% respectively, partly due to the strong deliveries at the end of June and beginning of July. On the other hand, North America arrivals fell 5.8%, contrasting with the increase in crude oil imports in US, which were boosted by pipeline imports in July. West Asia arrivals remained almost unchanged with only a 0.2% gain. Source : Makis Theodoratos, Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide

Judge throws out piracy charges against six Somalis In a ruling in U.S. District Court in Norfolk, Va., Judge Raymond A. Jackson yesterday threw out piracy charges against six Somali men. The six were captured after an April 10 attack on the USS Ashland in the Gulf of Aden. Another Somali was killed after the Ashland returned fire after being fired on from the skiff.

The remaining men on board the skiff were subsequently indicted on eight charges, including piracy. Though the piracy charge -- which carries a life sentence --has been thrown out, the six still face charges that carry hefty prison terms. In dismissing the piracy charge, the Judge cited an 1820 case, United States v. Smith, that defined piracy as "robbery at sea." Prosecutors are likely to appeal. Source : MarineLog

Ships collision was a ‘freak accident’, says Jairam Ramesh The state environment department, along with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), have sought legal consultation to claim damages from the two shipping companies whose vessels collided, causing an oil spill off the Mumbai coast, Union Environment minister Jairam Ramesh said at a media briefing in the city Saturday.

Terming the whole disaster a “freak accident”, Ramesh said “we have been confronted with a new situation, lessons have to be learnt and a system will be put in place to combat such pollution.”

“In terms of location (off Mumbai coast), timing (during southwest monsoon) and quantity (2,000 tonnes of fuel oil), the country hasn‟t ever seen such an oil spill till date,” Ramesh said. Speaking on the Navi Mumbai Airport issue, he said that it could be partially resolved by August 18, as the Environment Appraisal Committee (EAC) will be meeting to discuss the answers from CIDCO on the major environmental issues.

He added that the country will lose out on considerable funds it could have claimed as liability as it is not yet a part of the Bunker convention of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), a specialised agency of the UN which establishes compensation and liability issues. “The Directorate General of Shipping will be co-ordinating to tie up with the IMO for future cases,” Ramesh said.

The minister along with the Maharashtra environment minister Suresh Shetty, inspected the coastline near Elephanta Island and held review meetings with the various agencies.

Ramesh further added that the environment ministry has appointed the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) and the National Environment Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) to undertake an environment damage assessment of the oil spill. The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFI) has also been asked to submit a report on the loss of fishermen‟s livelihood. “Only after this report will we be able to compensate the fishermen,” he said.

The preliminary assessment report will be available within 10-15 days, while the detailed assessment will be available after three months. Furthermore, the union minister and state minister had consulted experts from London as well as on the damage control measures to be taken to save the coastline.

“The experts suggest that minimal human interference should be made in the regeneration of the marine ecology. There is no other option than to let them regenerate naturally. Regarding beaches, the state government has deputed a team of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) to conduct bio-remedial operations on the stretches of beach affected by the oil spill,” Ramesh said.

The minister further expressed concern over the extent of damage caused due to 2000 tonnes of furnace oil in the sea. “Fuel oil is more dangerous than crude oil as it does not vapourise. The impact on marine life like pohmphrets, crabs, sardines, lobsters is huge,” he said. He further trashed allegations of conspiracy in the oil spill.

“It was a freak accident and no conspiracy was involved. We do not know how much damage has been caused by the oil spill in the environment around the Navi Mumbai airport site, but there is no conspiracy,” he reiterated.

When questioned about the 31 containers with hazardous chemicals, the minister said, “Around 250 containers fell off the ship during the collision. About 83 have been physically located and accounted for. However, 160 containers are not yet located. There were also 7 containers of pesticide and one container was spotted along the coast. The remaining 6 are still on the ship and will be removed during salvage operations.” Normal port operations will be restored after the Chief Hydrographer gives the go-ahead after one week.

The minister further added that the MpBT and JNPT will both be tier 1 compliant within eight months. “We have started the process and are hoping that all major ports, especially those handling petroleum products will become tier 1 compliant,” Ramesh said.

According to him, within a year, an online system will be put in place which will have a detailed background of the 15,000 ships entering Indian ports. “This way, we will have an idea about the age of the ships. Random checks will be made on ships less than 25 years old and systematic checks will be made on ships older than 25 years,” he said. Source : DNA

Cota was piloting the Cosco Busan ship in heavy fog on Nov. 7, 2007, when it sideswiped a bridge tower. More than 50,000 gallons of oil leaked into the bay, contaminating 26 miles of shoreline.

Cota pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges of illegally discharging oil in the bay and killing thousands of birds. He was sentenced in July 2009. Prosecutors say Cota made several errors that day, including deciding to embark in the heavy fog. Source : KTVU-TV

South Korean trawler sinks near New Zealand A South Korean trawler sank in the southern ocean near New Zealand with three sailors confirmed dead and three missing, authorities said on Wednesday. The Korean registered Oyang 70 activated a distress beacon and then made a mayday call early in the morning about 400 nautical miles (740 km) east of New Zealand's South Island.

A nearby trawler rescued 45 crew members from life rafts.

"We have so far recovered five life rafts but have been advised there was a sixth life raft on board. We remain hopeful of locating the three missing men," said Mike Roberts of New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Centre in a statement.

A New Zealand airforce plane was helping to search for the missing men, who include the trawler's captain. Conditions in the area were described despite fog. The three dead crew were identified as Indonesians. There are no details on

Thale’s Submarine Distress Beacon for Royal Navy Thales UK‟s highly successful submarine distress beacon has been accepted into service with the Royal Navy (RN). Following a trial period, more than 100 SEEPIRB (submarine-ejected emergency positioning indicating radio beacon) buoys have been accepted into service with all classes of RN submarines, including the new Astute class.

The SEEPIRB has been developed for submarines to provide distress alerting and position information via radio transmissions on a satellite-aided tracking frequency. The message transmitted by the beacon is unique for each unit, thus providing identification of the transmitter. Once the search and rescue forces are alerted via the satellite-aided tracking network, they can converge on the confirmed position. Inter¬mediate and short-range location is aided by the SEEPIRB‟s onboard locator beacon. SEEPIRB can be launched from standard submerged signal ejectors (SSE) Mk 4, 6, 8 and 10. Launching can take place at maximum operational depth and submerged speeds of up to 15kt. No programming of the SEEPIRB is required. The alert func¬tions, and the vessel and country identifiers are pre- programmed into the beacon as agreed with each customer.

Phil Naybour, head of Thales UK‟s naval business, says: “Since winning the RN contract, we have won several additional export contracts and continue to see an increasing interest from around the world in this excellent product.” The buoy, which is designed and produced at Thales‟s Templecombe site in Somerset, is already in service with a number of submarine fleets around the world. five or six years, the port might handle from 50 to 60 million tons of cargo, Mr. Slesers said. According to Mr. Slesers, on the eve of the 810-year anniversary of the port, to be celebrated along with the Riga Festival on August 21, the port has been demonstrating the growth trend in freight traffic as compared with the same time period last year. In January the port transshipped fewer cargoes, 15% down from a year earlier, while the total seven-month volume show a slight gain, below 1%. The port's official said that immediately following the restoration of independence, the port handled only five million tons of cargo, while last year it transshipped a total of 30 million tons, exceeding the figures of the port of Ventspils. Mr. Slesers also added that the port of Riga had been left untouched by the crisis, as even during the worst period it still managed to work with a plus sign. Source: Baltic Course

Foss Maritime to add another hybrid tug Foss Maritime Company, builder and operator of the world's first hybrid tugboat, will soon add another hybrid to its Southern California fleet with the help of an air quality grant obtained by the Port of Long Beach.

Building on the success of Foss' Carolyn Dorothy hybrid tug, which was launched into service at the Port of Long Beach in 2009, Foss will retrofit an existing tug with hybrid technology for service in San Pedro Bay, thanks to a $1 million grant from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to the Port. The project will be implemented through a partnership between Foss, the Port of Long Beach, and the Port of Los Angeles.

"The Foss/Aspin Kemp & Associates hybrid technology is already proving its worth on the Carolyn Dorothy," said Richard Cameron, Director of Environmental Planning at the Port of Long Beach. "When the Air Resources Board asked for proposals to retrofit existing vessels with cutting-edge hybrid technology, we knew we wanted to partner with Foss again.

"We believe the retrofit will be the next step in hybrid technology evolution."

Foss will retrofit the Campbell Foss, a conventional dolphin tug currently assisting oceangoing vessels in the San Pedro Bay. The boat will be retrofitted with motor generators, batteries, and control systems at Foss' shipyard in Rainier, Oregon.

The goal is to achieve significant reductions in pollution emissions while enhancing fuel efficiency and operational capabilities. Projected annual emissions reductions per year include:

 More than 1.7 tons of diesel particulate matter  More than 53 tons of oxides of nitrogen  More than 1.2 tons of reactive organic gases  More than 1,340 tons of carbon dioxide

In addition, more than 100,000 gallons of diesel fuel will be saved each year.

Susan Hayman, Foss Maritime's Vice President of Environmental and Governmental Affairs, said Foss has been looking forward to an opportunity to retrofit one of its existing tugs to work alongside the Carolyn Dorothy and plans to introduce more hybrid tugs in the years to come.

"At Foss, we have a 'zero trace' corporate goal and a commitment to give our customers the highest level of service," she said. "Making use of cost-effective hybrid technology is an important part of our strategy as it allows us to use best-in-class, advanced technology to serve our customers and manage our expenses over the long term while safeguarding the environment at the same time. We have an unprecedented opportunity to transition harbor tugs around the world to vessels that deliver cleaner air and greater fuel efficiency.

"We're already doing it in San Pedro Bay and we're proud to continue our partnership with the Port of Long Beach."

The Carolyn Dorothy was introduced in the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles in January 2009 as an innovative approach to reducing air pollution. The vessel is designed to retain the power and maneuverability of her conventional Dolphin class sister tugs, while dramatically reducing emissions, noise, and fuel consumption. The vessel was newly built as a hybrid, rather than retrofitted. Source : MarineLog

Duisburg container traffic rises 29 percent to 1.1 million TEUs in H1 2010 Duisburg, the world‟s largest inland port, boosted first-half container traffic by 29 percent from a year ago, almost double the growth at Europe‟s top box hubs Rotterdam and Antwerp. The German port handled 1.1 million 20-foot equivalent units delivered by inland waterway vessels, trucks and freight trains in the six months to June 30. “This shows that we have largely recovered from the 2009 crisis and have even come close to our 2008 record year,” said Erich Staake, chief executive of port operator Duisburger Hafen AG. Total cargo traffic, including coal, iron and steel, which slumped during the 2009 recession, increased by seventeen percent to 13.2 million metric tons. Source: Journal of Commerce

Brightoil inks contracts for five VLCCs Rapidly expanding Hong Kong-listed Brightoil Petroleum plans to buy five very large crude carriers (VLCC) for $537.5 million, the company said in a filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The Chinese oil trader said on Monday it had signed a letter of intent on July 23 with third parties to purchase the five new vessels. The first four will be constructed and delivered to the company by the second half of 2012, with the remaining one to be delivered by first-quarter 2013, the statement said.

The purchase will be funded by bank financing and internal resources, it said. The contract for the transaction will be finalised no later than August 31, it added. Brightoil's filing was in response to a query by the Hong Kong bourse on unusual price and trading volume in its shares, which have fallen by 9.5 percent in the past two trading sessions. Apra Harbor Dredging Could Have Radioactive Impact Just leave it alone. If you tinker too much, it could trigger a radioactive disaster.

Senator BJ Cruz says scraping the coral off the bottom of Apra Harbor for carrier visits could stir up unfathomable trouble from way down below. Saying the military's Final Environmental Impact statement on the buildup fails to answer the economic and ecological red flags he raised during the draft impact comment period last year.

"There has been known leakage of radioactive material in the harbor and doing all of this dredging is just going to unearth it and start spreading it around and it's going to affect everything. And there was no real, genuine response to that. They've admittedly said that the birthing isn't going to go forward just now, but they're saying that that is their preferred site. When they say 'preferred site', it means it's going to happen sooner or later, maybe not right now, but it will happen."

Cruz says Apra berthing will also hurt Guam's visitor industry by destroying 70 acres of coral reef habitat. A viable natural resource and tourist attraction. No response from the Navy nor the Joint Guam Program Office on the letter Vice Speaker Cruz wrote to JGPO about Apra harbor dredging dangers. Governor's Deputy Chief of Staff Shawn Gumataotao says the Camacho administration is preparing research-backed formal responses to the FEIS and prefers not to respond to Cruz's concerns till after the governor's FEIS comments are completed. the project will be executed with medium sized hoppers. Besides dredging, Boskalis will also conduct a wide array of marine services ranging from installing and management of navigation aids through to hydrographic and land surveying activities for the client. The subsequent optional maintenance work of the access channel and basins is expected to be conducted with medium sized hoppers. Boskalis executed also the initial capital dredging and reclamation works for the new LNG port on behalf of Angola LNG Ltd in 2008.

The Boskalis strategy is designed to benefit from the key macro-economic drivers that are fueling global demand in our selected markets: global trade, increasing energy consumption, expanding population pressures and the challenges of changing climate conditions. This port expansion project is driven by a need to cater for larger vessels and future trade volumes. This LNG port related project reinforces the requirement for infrastructure to accommodate the strong demand for energy resources. Source : boskalis

The government's highest body on project approval -ECNEC-also endorsed the cross-border power transmission grid scheme, which would be installed between Bangladesh's Bheramara and Indian Baharampur in a bid to export and import electricity within the two neighbouring countries. Presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the ECNEC (Executive Committee of the National Economic Council) approved the two major projects Tuesday at its meeting in Dhaka.

Emerging from the meeting, planning secretary Habibullah Majumder said the ECNEC passed total Tk 42.27 billion-cost seven projects including six dredgers' procurement and a cross-border power transmission grid installation schemes.

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), Bangladesh Water Development Board and the Mongla Port Authority would procure six dredgers at Tk 6.39 billion which would mainly be used to conduct dredging for upgrading navigability of the Kolkata-Ashuganj river route. The Indian government on August 7 confirmed $1.0 billion credit line for Bangladesh government to build infrastructures, especially required for transit and transshipment between the two countries. Officials said the Indian government has offered another grant to Bangladesh to rebuild the 49-kilometre road from Ashuganj to Akhaura land port, to be utilised to transport Indian goods to its seven north- eastern states.

Bangladesh at a meeting with India in January 2010 agreed to provide transshipment facility at Ashuganj to expedite transportation of over-dimensional cargoes for Indian ONGC's power project in Tripura. The state-owned Power Grid Company Ltd (PGCB) would construct a nearly 40-kilometre-long 400kv cross-border power transmission line at Tk 10.79 billion by June 2012, in which the Asian Development Bank would provide $100 million fund. The PGCB will install the grid from Bheramara to the border point and the rest covering nearly a 60km stretch from the border point to Baharampur will be put in place by the Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCI). Mr Habibullah Majumder told reporters that the Bangladesh government would import 250mw power in the first year and 500mw from the second year for a 34-year period from India.

Through the cross-borer grid, both Bangladesh and India will be able to export or import power in the future as the transmission system will have the capacity to exchange 500mw of power soon after the system is launched. The ECNEC also approved five other projects including Tk 7.65 billion's worth augmentation of gas production under first- track programme, and Tk 13.10 billion's worth procurement of dredgers and related machinery for the water resources ministry. Dubai ports giant posts 10 percent profit rise DP World of Dubai, the world's fourth largest ports operator, said Wednesday its net profits rose 10 percent in the first half compared with a year ago thanks to strong container turnover. "Net profit after tax from continuing operations was up 10 percent to 206 million dollars," DP World said, noting that the result in the corresponding period last year was 188 million dollars. "The return of container volume growth across our portfolio in the first half of the year and our success in maintaining container revenue per TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) slightly ahead of the prior period has allowed DP World to deliver revenue growth of five percent," it said.

The return was achieved "despite a small decline in non-container revenues," it added. The company did not post any quarterly results. Revenues hit 1.46 billion dollars, compared with 1.38 billion dollars in the first half of 2009. Consolidated throughput was up seven percent to 13.2 million TEU, compared with 12.3 million TEU previously.
