re sold The Great Bake he W Off 2015 This summer the news has been somewhat p dominated by the terrible plight of s 60 t F n families desperately fleeing Syria to escape RE de E to resi persecution and violence. Motivated by new and increasingly harrowing daily news reports, a few of us attended a meeting in hosted by a couple who had visited a refugee camp at Calais. We, like many, wanted to help but were unsure how. At the Witney meeting, they outlined the quickest and best ways for people living in the area to help. It became clear that our initial thoughts on donating items/clothes/toys were probably not the most effective aid; instead we need to focus on fundraising for the charities who are on the ground working in this area. After much research, we identified two charities between which we would split our funds. Save The Children is based in refugee camps across Europe, making lives easier. In addition to the more obvious help – sleeping bags, tents, sustenance, and healthcare – they are setting up schools and play areas for the children. The second charity we selected is Asylum Welcome which helps families on arrival here in with settling, integration support and much more. So, the first in a series of fundraisers began with The Great by baking, eating, helping and filling the hall with a feeling Cassington Bake Off on Sunday 11th October. 5 Roy’s ramblings Sorry I don’t get about as much as I did. I thought it time to give up driving at 90 and six months as I did not want to become a statistic. I had luckily kept out of trouble for many years but I misjudged a car on the roundabout at Eynsham and though I luckily did not get into trouble I said that’s it – just came home and said, ‘That’s enough’. So life is a bit more difficult, having to rely on other people. We have some good friends round us, we will survive. We miss the 9.30 communion on a Tuesday but will make up for it next week. Now then, I have been thinking of the past, seeing a lot about the Botley Road Oxford. I wondered how many folk had gone up Botley Road at 80–85 miles an hour. It was in about 1945. For 47 years I worked at Coxeters, the Land Rover people, as an electrical fitter. Now, they repaired all sorts of vehicles; Rolls Royce and so on. The service manager Bill Penfold came out and said, “Roy, I have a special job for you, to tune an SS” (the forerunner of the Jaguar, white with a long bonnet and a large six-cylinder engine). It was superb. Bill said the customer was fed up – he’d already had it tuned but it was no better. So I had to get it right. Well in those days I had done a bit of tuning so I got stuck in. I will be a bit technical now. It had a twin contact distributor and I had found in the past that just setting the contacts to 12,000 was not enough. You had to turn the engine and make sure the contacts opened on every cam the same. I did all this, then checked the three carburetors. I found one was partly seized and freed all this off and reset them. Then I checked the tappets – it was an overhead valve – then did a check of the timing and reset that. I started the engine and all seemed OK so I took it up the Botley Road at 30mph, out on to the bypass, FREE Public TalkFREEPublic which was a single carriageway two-way road then, and she seemed OK at 80mph. FREE Public Talk I came back to the garage and handed the keys over. When the customer came for it Bill said he wanted the fitter to go with him and this was when we went up the Botley Road at 80mph. Now bear in mind that there were no ‘keep left’ signs, very few vehicles. We got out on the bypass and he put his foot down. We had just reached 100mph when we noticed ahead there was a lady on a horse with a dalmatian running beside them. The dog started to run across the road but saw us and turned back. The driver did not attempt to swerve, which Stem cells – The answer for all our ills? would have been the end of us, but carried on as if nothing Thursday 19th November 2015 Time: Refreshments from 6:15 pm for a 6:30 pm start had happened. “Phew,” I said to Bill, “don’t send me out with Location: Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre – Lecture Theatre, Level 1, Windmill Rd, Oxford OX3 7LD that customer again!” Bill said, “He was impressed; he sent Professor Zameel Cader, Consultant Neurologist and Director of the Oxford Headache Centre and . you this,” and produced an old-type white five pound note – Director of Stembancc, University of Oxford will talk about how the world continues to face major challenges in providing effective therapies for disabling and degenerative neurological disorders. almost half of what I was earning in those days. 14 The Real MacGuffins in association with Fol Espoir Theatre Company present

Friday 13th November 7.30 pm, Cassington Village Hall Tickets £10 adult, £6 child from Ruth Bakewell (01865 883512) Nicky Copelin (01865 881813). It’s 1942 and hordes of Yankee servicemen have just arrived in England – where the locals speak a strange dialect, boil all their food, and talk endlessly about the weather. With lashings of physical comedy, this rib-tickling new show for adults and families will lovingly poke fun at British eccentricities and the doomed attempts of outsiders to understand them. Get ready to judge for yourself in a night of joyous laughter and downright silliness as a crack team of experts attempts to explain the quirks and customs of British life, featuring everything from cricket, warm beer and ha’pennies to Sunday afternoons in the country. The Real MacGuffins have proved a crowd favourite at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival since 2010, playing sell-out shows to critical acclaim. Their highly energetic, interactive comedy delights audiences both young and old – with a mix of wordplay, good (and some bad) old fashioned jokes and physical comedy, there is something for everyone. Fol Espoir are the creators of Winston On the Run (***** WhatsOnStage) and Dr Brown Because (**** The Times, The Sunday Times, Time Out). “Incredibly silly and funny … these are three very talented performers whose comedy dynamic adds a nice extra layer to the show.”
