The Root Beer Float Was Created In 1893 (+13 More Fun Facts) On August 6, float a scoop of vanilla ice cream in an ice cold mug of frothy root beer. It’s National Root Beer Float Day! Also known as the “Black Cow,” the root beer float got its start in Colorado in a mining camp. Frank J. Wisner of Cripple Creek, Colorado, gets the credit for inventing the “Black Cow” in August of 1893. One night Wisner, owner of the Cripple Creek Cow Mountain Gold Mining Company, was staring out the window and thinking about the line of soda waters he was producing for the citizens of Cripple Creek when he came upon an idea. The full moon that night shined on the snow-capped Cow Mountain and reminded him of a scoop of vanilla ice cream. He hurried back to his bar and scooped a spoonful of ice cream into the children’s favorite flavor of soda, Myers Avenue Red Root Beer. After trying, he liked it and served it the very next day. It was an immediate hit. Wisner named the new creation, “Black Cow Mountain” but the local children shortened the name to “Black Cow”. Root beer is made out of 16 Roots, and herbs. Colonists were actually the first people to make root beer. Roy Allen purchased the root beer formula for A&W root beer from an Arizona Pharmacist. The first batch was made in June of 1919. The A and W in A&W stands for Alan and Wright. Roy Allen would team up with Frank Wright in 1922. -

Under the terms of the reverse takeover, Keurig will pay $103.75 per share in a special cash dividend to Dr Pepper shareholders, who will also retain 13 percent of the combined company. The deal will pay $18.7bn in cash to shareholders in total and create a massive beverage distribution network in the U.S. About Dr Pepper Snapple Group Incorporated in 2007 and headquartered in Plano (Texas), Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. manufactures and distributes non-alcoholic beverages in the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean, and Canada. There are J inputs produced by the NU upstream firms and J final products produced by the NB bottlers. Each final product makes use of one (and only one) input product. All J final products are sold by the retailer. The set of products produced by each upstream i j firm i and bottler j are given by JU and JB, respectively. In what follows, we restrict j j to the case in which the sets in both fJBgj2NB and fJU gj2NU are disjoint (i.e., Diet Dr Pepper cannot be produced by two separate bottlers or upstream firms). We allow for a bottler to transact with multiple upstream firms (e.g., a PepsiCo bottler selling products based on PepsiCo and Dr Pepper SG concentrates). The model assumes that linear prices are used along the vertical chain. That is, linear prices are used both by upstream firms selling their inputs to bottlers and by bottlers selling their final products to the retailer. The price of input product j set by an upstream firm is given by cj; the price of final good k set by a bottler is wk; and the retail price of product j is pj. We assume that the input cost of upstream firms is zero, and the marginal costs of all other firms equals their input prices. The market share of product j, given a vector of retail prices p, is given by sj(p). -

Patient Information Department of Nutrition and Dietetics Allergy: Soya free diet This is a leaflet designed to give you, your family and friends, dietary information and helpful tips on avoiding soya. Introduction Intolerance to the protein in soya can occur. To prevent symptoms, all soya and foods containing it must be removed from your diet. Before going on a soya free diet you should discuss it with your doctor. Removing soya from the diet does not put you at nutritional risk but soya does appear in a wide number of products and not eating these will affect the variety of your diet. If your reactions to soya have been severe and immediate, such as lip swelling, an immediate rash or sickness, do not re- introduce soya without first talking to your doctor or dietitian. If you have removed soya from your diet, as a trial, but have found no improvement after two weeks try slowly reintroducing soya back into your diet. How can I tell if a food contains soya? Food Labelling Every pre-packed food, including alcoholic drinks, sold in the UK and European Union (EU) must show clearly on the label if it contains any of 14 major allergens. These must be highlighted (in bold, colour or underlined) on food labels within the ingredients list. This includes soybeans (soya). It is not compulsory for food manufacturers to use a warning statement – always check the ingredients first. Patient Information Soya is added to a wide range of manufactured products. You will have to check the ingredient list on all manufactured foods to see if soya is present. -

(October 1, 2014) – Today Mars Petcare officially opened the doors of its new, state-of-the-art, Gold-LEED certified $110 million Global Innovation Center in Thompson’s Station, Tenn. The new campus, designed to help the company Make a Better World for Pets™ through pet food innovations, is the third Mars Petcare innovation center and first in the United States. It will serve as the global center of excellence for the company’s portfolio, which includes five billion dollar brands: PEDIGREE®, WHISKAS®, ROYAL CANIN®, BANFIELD® and IAMS®. The new center joins forces with similar Mars Petcare Global Innovation Centers located in Verden, Germany and Aimargues, France, and will focus on dry cat and dog food in both the natural and mainstream pet food categories. “Everything about this campus is dedicated to helping pets live longer and happier lives,” said Larry Allgaier, president of Mars Petcare North America. “Mars has been doing business in Tennessee for the past 35 years, employing nearly 1,700 Associates across our Petcare, Chocolate and Wrigley business segments.
