Tyler Chatwood pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts … has now allowed a home run in four consecutive starts. Nolan Arenado hit a walk-off home run to complete the cycle, his second career walk-off home run (first: June 7, 2013 vs. San Diego) … was his fourth career walk-off hit, his third against the San Francisco Giants … he is the eighth player in franchise history to hit for the cycle (last: Michael Cuddyer, Aug. 17, 2014 vs. Cincinnati) … he is the fifth player in Major League history to hit a walk-off home run to complete the cycle, the first since Carlos Gonzalez accomplished the feat on July 31, 2010 vs. the Chicago Cubs … his four hits tied a career high (9x, last: Aug. 28, 2016 at Washington). Trevor Story went 2-for-4 with this 10th home run of the season … has now hit safely in six of his last seven games, batting .409 (9-for-22) over that span. Ty Blach made his first career start against the Rockies, fifth appearance … pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts … allowed a season-high tying two home runs (also: May 6 at Cincinnati) Denard Span went 1-for-2 with a season-high three walks … recorded a season-high two stolen bases … is batting .333 (21-for-63) over his last 16 games.     A’s News Clips, Wednesday, May 18, 2011 Oakland A's pound Los Angeles Angels 14-0 By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune Mark Ellis has endured a season-long struggle with the bat. Then how to explain a night such as Tuesday? It all came so easily for Ellis and his A's teammates in a 14-0 stomping of the Los Angeles Angels. The run total was a season high, as was their 15 hits. The A's swept the two-game series and moved into a first-place tie with the Texas Rangers in the American League West. It's the first time the A's have occupied first since June 3 last season, when they also were deadlocked with Texas. Leading the hit parade was Ellis, the second baseman who has shined defensively but has been the invisible man in the batter's box. Sure, he collected three hits Sunday against the Chicago White Sox, but one was a bloop job and another was an infield single. And he did bring home Monday's winning run against the Angels with a fielder's-choice grounder. But he hit the ball with authority Tuesday, finishing 3 for 4 with a season-high four RBIs. That lifted his average from .194 to .210. Ellis was happiest to deliver with runners on base. "I really pride myself on doing good in that situation, and I haven't done that this year," he said. "It's nice to get a couple hits with guys in scoring position." Ellis smoked a run-scoring double off the left-field wall in the A's three-run second.

    MEDIA CLIPS – July 18, 2017 Rox seek 3rd straight win in Senzatela's return By Max Gelman / MLB.com | 9:36 AM ET Antonio Senzatela's demotion to Triple-A Albuquerque was short-lived, as the young right-hander will make his return for the Rockies on Tuesday to start against the Padres and Dinelson Lamet. Colorado has won back-to-back games for the first time since a six-game streak from June 14-20. Senzatela will be making his first MLB start since June 22 when he gave up nine runs in five innings to the D-backs. He made two relief appearances following that outing and was then optioned to Albuquerque for a start. He threw 3 1/3 innings for the Isotopes on July 13 and gave up one run on four hits. While in the bullpen, Senzatela's fastball velocity jumped. His fastball averaged 94 mph in June, but in relief, it averaged 95.3 mph. "I got to see the game from a different view," Senzatela said of his relief outings. "It taught me to go in, be more aggressive and finish the hitter real quick. I worked quick, and I felt good. I looked to get out there hitter in two or three pitches -- dominate." For the Padres, Lamet will make his first career start against the Rockies. The young righty has a 5.93 ERA in 41 innings. 1 It's been all or nothing for Lamet through his first eight big league starts. The rookie has a legit three-pitch mix, and all three project as Major League-caliber out pitches.

    On the field at Kauffman Stadium before the May 13th game between the Kansas City Royals and Colorado Rockies I was looking for Rene Lachemann to tell him that one of his former teammates wanted to see him. But Rene was not around, so I began asking different Rockies players and staff if they had seen Mr. Lachemann. All of them responded with the same reply, “You will hear him before you see him.” Soon it was discovered what they meant as the bench coach of the Rockies made his way up from under the stadium where he had been working with one of the catchers, and his booming voice could be heard. This voice has been heard by many major league and minor league players for many years as Rene Lachemann has managed and coached and trained these players in the finer points of the game. Rene was born in Los Angeles California and is the youngest of three brothers to have long careers in professional baseball. Rene served as a batboy for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1959 to 1962, went to the University of California and was signed by the Kansas City Athletics in 1964 as a catcher. He played for the KC A’s in 1965 and 1966 and moved with the team to Oakland appearing in games in 1968. He began managing in the Oakland minor leagues in 1973 spending 5 seasons in the A’s system before going to the Seattle Mariners organization. He took his first major league managers job in 1981 with the Mariners succeeding Maury Wills, and led the M’s from 1981-1983.

Cho DEGREE: Master of Science COLLEGE: Teachers College DATE: July 2020 PAGES: 27 The Designated Hitter (DH) rule in Major League Baseball (MLB) is a topic of great debate. In the National League (NL), all players take a turn at bat. However, in the American League (AL), a DH usually bats for the pitcher. MLB pitchers typically do not have strong batting averages. The DH rule was created to increase a team’s offense. This study looked at whether there is an apparent difference between the AL and the NL. In theory, a DH will lead to more hits, more runs, and therefore a higher scoring game. This study looked at the average runs per game and total home runs for the AL and NL during the 1998 through 2018 regular seasons. Since the assumptions of parametric multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were not met, a nonparametric analysis was used. The permutation test for multivariate means results showed an apparent difference between the two leagues (p < .05). A quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA) was used as a follow up test and showed home runs as the variable driving the difference between the two leagues. Therefore, the AL has better scoring performance than the NL.

Some were dinks. Some were well-struck. They all hurt, and the Angels handed the A's an 8-3 defeat in front of 37,228 fans at Angel Stadium. That clinched the three-game series for Los Angeles and assured the A's a losing record on their seven-game road trip against American League West foes. After Jered Weaver shut them out Monday, it appeared the A's were getting their easiest assignment of the series against rookie right-hander Tyler Chatwood. The A's scraped together just six hits. After taking the lead on Conor Jackson's two-run homer in the third, the A's didn't notch another hit until Kevin Kouzmanoff's double with two outs in the ninth. "It's just one of those things we've got to put behind us and try to salvage the series," Jackson said. The A's will try to avoid a three-game sweep Wednesday against former Athletic Dan Haren, who brings a 4-1 record and 1.46 ERA into the game. McCarthy came in with a 2.10 ERA. He gave up 14 hits in 51/3 innings and left with the A's trailing 7-3. It was the most hits allowed by an A's starter since Barry Zito surrendered 15 in a July 8, 2003, game against Tampa Bay.

    Case Study: Professional Baseball Stadium Heavy-Traffic Flooring Coors Field Location: Denver, CO Project Overview: Every year nearly three million fans venture to Coors Field to attend a Colorado Rockies baseball game. Built in 1995, Coors Field is an all brick stadium constructed in the heart of Denver to resemble classic ballparks such as Wrigley Field and Fenway Park. In 2011 the Rockies organization elected to complete a series of improvements to the already highly regarded ballpark. This development effort included the addition of the Camarena Loft, a high-end restaurant located in the right field deck concourse. Complete with high-end natural stone accents and stunning views of downtown Denver flanked by the Rocky Mountains, Camarena Loft offered a unique setting to watch a baseball game. In order to compliment the artistic design of the open air restaurant, the Rockies sought after a decorative flooring system that would not only be aesthetically appealing but also durable enough to withstand heavy traffic within an exterior environment. The installation contractor, Denver Decorative Concrete selected HP Spartacote’s Sparta-Stain™ high performance polyaspartic flooring system after consulting with the Colorado Rockies and the General Contractor, Mortenson Construction of Denver. Installation Specifics: Initially, the existing concrete floor was ground to properly open the concrete for optimal coating adhesion. With the floor prepped, the contractor installed a sand-beige Sparta-Flex® polyaspartic prime coat. A second coat of Sparta-Flex® Clear was then rolled out and two colors of Abstract Dye™ were sprayed directly into the wet coating. The final stage of the application included a high gloss top-coat with HP Spartacoteʼs Sparta-Flex™ clear polyaspartic, complete with Sparta-Grip™ traction additive for a durable finish.
