His counsel and encouragement run throughout this work, especially as he encouraged me to go to the CESCM at the University of Poitiers and to the libraries in Bourges. The knowledgeable librarians at the Bibliotheque Municipale de Bourges, and the assistant head, Jehan-Louis Roche, often offered bibliographic advice and also graciously sent photocopies of sources that I had missed to Edinburgh, saving me some time and much money. CL:r:ld .BE3.r-.r-y Le Berry, in the geographical centre of France, developed its own "crusading culture" that both affected the ideas of the people living there and effected new institutions and traditions in that society pertaining to the crusades. This culture evolved through the symbiotic influences of, for example, pilgrimage, church-building and crusade preaching. The interplay of such forces and events made itself felt throughout Latin Christendom, and sometimes Berry did not differ greatly from other areas. Often, however, it built churches, hosted councils or witnessed popular movements that marked it from these other regions. Both the ubiquitous and the specific manifestations of the crusading culture in central France are worth studying because culture is as much about the mundane as it is about the extraordinary. Culture is built upon "the very material of our daily lives, the bricks and mortar of our most commonplace understandings, feelings and responses. "1 The term "cultural history" is not used here as a nebulous incantation to allow the inclusion of any possible shred of evidence, but rather to define the diverse manifestations of the crusade as found in central France from the eleventh through the thirteenth centuries. The term "holy war" in the title is used to denote those expeditions which contemporaries felt were justified by divine sanction and which usually had some component of the older theme of pilgrimage. Norman Housley defines the "'pluralist' school of crusade historians" as those who, building upon the work of Jonathan Riley­ Smith, argue that popular movements and those not immediately directed toward Jerusalem still were understood by most contemporaries as crusades and should be called as such today. 2 I have enrolled in this school because contemporary references to participants from Berry in the Albigensian crusades describe them as taking part in an iter or peregrinatio, and Rome offered a full indulgence for them until 1213. 3 Most crusade histories tend to focus on the expeditions themselves as they leave the west, and on their activities in the Levant, Iberia or other theatres of war. When they look at the society that supported them, these studies usually talk only of have.

Introduction: The first Crusade, a massive and unprecedented undertaking in the western world, differed from the majority of subsequent crusades into the Holy Land in an important way: it contained no royalty and was undertaken with very little direct support from the ruling families of Western Europe. This aspect of the crusade led to the development of sophisticated hierarchies and vassalages among the knights who led the crusade. These relationships culminated in the formation of the Crusader States, Latin outposts in the Levant surrounded by Muslim states, and populated primarily by non-Catholic or non-Christian peoples. Despite the difficulties engendered by this situation, the Crusader States managed to maintain control over the Holy Land for much of the twelfth century, and, to a lesser degree, for several decades after the Fall of Jerusalem in 1187 to Saladin.

For here was a rolling landscape with a beautiful river thickly bordered with groves of Oak, Hickory, Maple, Cedar and Black Walnut. With the land in places sloping gently to the water's edge and in others rising in sheer limestone bluffs many feet above the river, and the abundant wildlife that inhabited the area, no more beautiful or varied scenery could be found in the Middle West than in the Valley of the Kankakee and its tributaries. It is little wonder that the Indians call it, "Ti - yar - ac - ke," meaning wonderful land- wonderful home; or, that they established many villages within what are now called The Greater Kankakee Area. There were three main villages; "Inne - Maung" or Chief Yellow Head's Village in the eastern end of the county, "She - mor - gard," or Soldiers Village; and the principal settlement "Shaw - waw - nas -see," or Little Rock Village, located near the mouth of Rock Creek. All of this bountiful land and its many natural resources was ceded to the Federal Government at the treaty of Camp Tippecanoe in 1832.

The form of the Cross which is the symbol of the Order brings to our minds the five wounds of our Lord as well as the suffering in the Holy Land with the loss of its own blood. “The Pilgrim Shell” reminds us of the reality that we are all pilgrims on this earth, and recalls also our pledge to aid the needy. Exemplary moral conduct and true Christian feeling are the prime requisites for admission to the Order.

It’s that great college tradition of staying awake from sundown on one day, through the long night, and well past sunup the next day, cramming our brains with information, both review and new, in the last-ditch quest for a decent grade on our finals. We remember that, in the desperate effort to stave-off ever encroaching sleep, and keep energy levels up, we fueled ourselves on sugary snacks, Rahman noodles, and strong (and usually very bad) coffee. Amazingly, sometimes, it actually worked. But, as important a tradition as the college all-nighter was to many of us, it holds only a shadow of the impact in a knight’s vigil.

In fact, Louis-Philippe Turcotte tells us that there were fewer than 5,000 inhabitants in all of New France in 1667, but that number increased exponentially with new arrivals and with each new generation of French Canadiens. By the mid-19th century, the land could no longer support the population, and the push and pull of political and economic forces led to a massive emigration of French-Canadians into the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The two decades of his rule marked the extension of Latin conquests in the east, most notably by the conquest of the important coastal cities of Arsulf, Acre, Caesarea, Beirut and Sidon. These vital ports for the early Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem provided outlets to the sea for commerce, as well as safe harbors for incoming assistance from the west.

  • Customary Versus Civil Law Within Old Regime France
    Testing Legal Origins Theory within France: Customary Laws versus Roman Code David Le Bris KEDGE Business School 1 October 2014 Comments welcome Abstract: Legal origin theory emphasizes the negative consequences of civil law on financial and, subsequently, economic development. Before the Revolution, French territory was strictly divided according to the legal regime. The southern part of France was under the Roman civil law and the north was under customary laws which, as with common law, gave more flexibility to judges and less right to the state. This dichotomy offers the unique opportunity to test the legal origin theory free from cross- country bias. Using fiscal revenues across 79 Departments from 1817-1821, we test if Departments under civil law, over the centuries and up to 15 years ago, exhibit lower financial and economic outcomes. We find that civil law Departments do exhibit lower economic performances but this difference is not robust when controlled for fundamental factors. The civil law appears even to have a positive effect in many specifications. Old Regime France does not confirm the legal origin theory. Legal origin theory (also called law and finance theory) proposes an attractive answer to this fundamental question by focusing on the origin of the legal institutions (La Porta et al., 1997, 1998, 2000, hereafter LLSV). The first part of this theory is that financial development achieved in one country depends on the enforcement of private property rights, support of private contractual arrangements, and protections of the legal right of investors.
