  • {PDF EPUB} Elvira Mistress of the Dark a Photographic Retrospective of the Queen of Halloween by Cassandra Pete the Untold Truth of Elvira
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Elvira Mistress of the Dark A Photographic Retrospective of the Queen of Halloween by Cassandra Pete The Untold Truth Of Elvira. There are some public figures who seem to have always been around, people everyone knows even if they are not familiar with their body of work. B-movie horror show hostess and scream queen Elvira is one such entity, instantly recognizable with her enormous black bouffant hairstyle and gratuitous cleavage accented by the plunging neckline of her skin-tight vampiress gown. But behind the vamp-camp drag image is a woman with a storied history, one that often takes a backseat to her biggest claim to fame. From her birth in Kansas in 1951, to her first stint as horror hostess on Movie Macabre , to her present-day fame as television, movie, comic book, and merchandise star, Cassandra Peterson seems to be consistently growing and building her image. As she continues to work well into her sixties, still as simultaneously campy and glamorous as ever, her fascinating history deserves a deeper dive. Marked by fate to become Elvira. Many people with a penchant for the paranormal grow the fascination early on, their interests not aligning with those of their peers, marking them as an outsider. It was no different for a young Cassandra Peterson. As a very young child, she suffered scalding burns over 35% of her body that resulted in her needing to have a host of skin graft surgeries. This incident later caused her to feel marked, both physically and otherwise, as different, and began her fascination with monsters and outcasts.

Stewart “Goth”: A phrase which, for many of us, conjures up stereotypical images of pitch black-clad and pale figures, of eerily quiet teenagers seemingly dressed for Halloween year-round; and, perhaps for the more historically-inclined among us, a collection of Germanic tribes whose clashes with the Roman Empire represent some of the most crucial turning points in history. Of course, the former—the cliched idea of teens or young adults who take part in a dreary and doom-laden clique, more likely frequenters of rain-drenched cemeteries, or abandoned and cobwebbed Victorian manors, than varsity athletes or high-rolling yuppies—does have some merit to it: They say that stereotypes are based on at least a kernel of truth, after all. But as much as “goth” is a recognizable term throughout most of the Western world—where counterculture has been, and continues to be, a visible aspect of our societies—it’s also one which, as we near the 2020s, is fairly dated: Though rooted in the late © Ryan V. [Music fades out.] 00:00:13 Music Transition “Huddle Formation” from the album Thunder, Lightning, Strike by The Go! Team. 00:00:20 Jesse Host It’s the Bullseye Halloween Special. I’m Jesse Thorn. My first guest Thorn this week is Cassandra Peterson. You might know her better as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Probably the most famous Halloween character since Dracula. For 36 years, Peterson has rocked the giant wig, the tailored black dress, and the glossy black nail polish. She’s appeared on countless TV shows. She had her own movie. She’s performed live at theaters and amusement parks for years. This year’s Halloween’s gonna be very different. Instead of live shows, she’s doing virtual Halloween celebrations, recording music, and signing merch for fans. But she is, as always, Halloween’s most vocal champion. When Cassandra and I spoke in 2017, we kicked things off with a classic clip from the ‘80s. She’d just been hired to host the spooky B movie TV show, Movie Macabre. You see her on screen sprawled out on a red velvet couch, wearing all black. Cassandra Peterson transformed into Elvira. 00:01:24 Sound Transition Music swells and fades. Effect 00:01:25 Clip Clip Music: An eerie, unsettling soundtrack full of howling wolves, shrieking bats, and other atmospheric spooky noises.
