The A’s did offer contracts to all other unsigned players on the 40-man roster, including their three remaining arbitration eligible players: right-handed pitcher Michael Wuertz and outfielders Rajai Davis and Scott Hairston. Cust batted .240 with 25 home runs and 70 RBI in 149 games in 2009. He led the A’s in home runs, walks (93) and strikeouts (185) for the third consecutive season and also topped the club in games (149), runs (88), on-base percentage (.356) and intentional walks (5). The 30-year old left-handed hitter led the American League in strikeouts for the third consecutive season to become the first player to lead the AL in strikeouts three straight seasons since Minnesota’s Bobby Darwin did it from 1972-74. Cust also finished fifth in the AL in walks in 2009 but his batting average was fourth lowest. Cust appeared in appeared in 70 games with four Major League teams from 2001 to 2006 before finally breaking through with the A’s in 2007. He was a .222 hitter with five home runs and 19 RBI in 70 games from 2001-06 and batted .241 with 84 home runs, 229 RBI, 309 walks and 546 strikeouts in 421 games in three seasons with the A’s. A’s News Clips, Wednesday, December 1, 2010 Power-hungry Oakland A's ready to wine, dine former Houston Astros slugger Lance Berkman By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune A's officials were scheduled to have dinner Tuesday night in Houston with free agent Lance Berkman, two sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to Bay Area News Group. Berkman, a switch-hitter who's slugged 327 homers over 12 seasons, is known to have been on the team's radar. Presumably, the A's view him as their designated hitter if they sign him. Berkman hit just .248 with 14 homers and 58 RBIs last season, which he began with the Houston Astros before being traded to the New York Yankees. But Berkman, who turns 35 in February, told Fox Sports last week that he's fully recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery that bothered him much of last season. He hit 25 homers as recently as 2009 for Houston. Adding power is the A's most pressing need. They would have a hole at DH if they decide not to tender a contract to Jack Cust, which is a strong possibility. The A's must decide by 9 p.m. Thursday (PT) whether to tender contracts to their 10 arbitration-eligible players, including Cust. Other logical non-tender candidates: outfielder Travis Buck, reliever Brad Ziegler and either of two third basemen -- Kevin Kouzmanoff or Edwin Encarnacion. It's believed the A's would consider signing Berkman to a one- or two-year deal, though the team doesn't comment on free- agent negotiations.

A’s News Clips, Thursday, November 4, 2010 Oakland A's buy out contract of Eric Chavez, pick up options of Coco Crisp, Mark Ellis By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune, 11/4/2010 The A's cut ties with third baseman Eric Chavez on Wednesday, declining his $12.5 million option for 2011 and paying him a $3 million buyout. Although most saw the move coming, it provides a historic conclusion to the six-time Gold Glover's career in an Oakland uniform. The A's also announced that they exercised their $6 million option on second baseman Mark Ellis and $5.75 million option on center fielder Coco Crisp, ensuring both will return next season. Chavez -- whose six-year, $66 million contract expired at season's end -- now becomes a free agent. And though he's not sure what interest he'll generate, he said he's not ready to retire despite multiple injuries that have ravaged his career since 2006. One possible scenario was for the A's to extend Chavez, 32, a non-roster invitation to spring training if he appeared healthy. But Chavez said he needs a fresh start and believes the A's are ready to move on as well. "I'm going to see what's out there," Chavez said from his home in Arizona. "I've done everything, seen every doctor. The only thing I haven't done is change the scenery. And I don't even know what that (entails). But I'm going to hang my hat on that and see if that makes any difference." A first-round pick in 1996, Chavez became a cornerstone as the A's made five postseason appearances over a seven-year span beginning in 2000.

A’s News Clips, Thursday, December 2, 2010 A's fans turn Planning Commission into rally to keep team Hearing on ballpark draws many who want team to stay in Oakland By Angela Woodall, Oakland Tribune 12/2/2010 Money, traffic, architecture, terrorism, jobs and civic pride all became the topics of Wednesday night's Oakland Planning Commission meeting. But few mentioned what the environmental impacts of a 39,000-seat ballpark on the waterfront would be -- even though that was the purpose of the hearing. "This is not an opportunity to rail against the ownership that has expressed a desire to leave Oakland," Commissioner Doug Boxer told the crowd, which began to gather in the plaza outside City Hall hours before the meeting began. They donned T-shirts and handed out stickers printed with the slogan "Stay," while business owners, neighbors, media members and elected officials began filing into the 60-seat hearing room. Few environmental impact reports generate the level of attention that the Victory Court proposal has. But so many people packed inside the room that staff had to ask some to move to another room where they could continue to follow the meeting. Dozens more filled the lobby of City Hall. Boxer also asked people to hold their applause at public comments. That didn't stop the clapping after one man told the commission that it was time to look at what Oakland can do instead of stopping at opposition. "The A's belong in Oakland. It's our history," the man said. Bryan Grunwald, a retired architect introduced one of the few sober moments with his competing proposal to build a ballpark above Interstate 980 between 14th and 18th streets.

Instead of a year ago when they were a couple of back-end pitchers expected to be part-time fill-ins of the Seattle Mariners pitching staff, Vargas and Fister enter this season almost assured of being in the Mariners rotation. "You still have to go out and throw well, but it's nice when you've got people that are counting on you to do what you've done in the past," Vargas said. Neither Vargas or Fister were statistically superior in 2010, but then again, neither were the Mariners sans AL Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez. Yet each proved a viable and valuable member of Seattle's rotation, appearing to cement their spots moving forward. Vargas set career highs in nearly every statistically category. The most important were his number of starts and innings pitched, finally proving he was fully recovered from surgery to remove a bone spur his pitching elbow in October 2007, followed by surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip in 2008 that all but ended his two- year career with the New York Mets. Vargas finished last season making 31 starts and throwing 192 2-3 innings, 101 more than he'd ever thrown in a major league season.

Ultimately, however, they may have grander plans for the position. Multiple reports Thursday suggested the A's are in heavy pursuit of free agent Adrian Beltre, though there were no indications a deal is imminent. Beltre told The Boston Globe that he's waiting out his options and prefers re-signing with the Red Sox, though he also told the paper he could sign a deal "right now if I wanted to." He didn't specify with which team that deal might be. A's officials, who don't comment on free agents as a policy, declined to comment on Beltre. Designated hitter Jack Cust, the A's leading home run hitter from 2007-09, also was not tendered a contract on the final day for teams to make offers for players eligible for arbitration, nor was outfielder Travis Buck. Cust, Buck and Encarnacion, who spent all of three weeks with the organization after being claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays, become free agents. The A's did tender contracts to pitchers Dallas Braden, Craig Breslow, Joey Devine and Brad Ziegler; outfielders Conor Jackson and Ryan Sweeney; and Kouzmanoff. That means all are under team control, and the A's will try to negotiate contracts with them and avoid the arbitration table.
