Aux Etats-Unis, Blood, Sweat and Tears est sans conteste le groupe de rock de la fin des sixties qui intègre le plus de jazz à sa démarche musicale : passages swing intégrés aux compositions binaires, présence active d’une phalange de souffleurs (trompette, trombone, sax) qui ne se limite pas à un travail de section (comme dans le R’n B ou dans un groupe comme Chicago) mais est faite de vrais solistes - parmi ces solistes, un trompettiste qui fera ensuite une belle carrière dans le jazz, Lew Soloff, le tromboniste Jerry Hyman et un saxophoniste dont on ne sait trop ce qu’il est devenu depuis, Fred Lipsius. I grew up during the heyday of pop instrumental music in the 1950s and the 1960s (there were 30 instrumental hits in the Top 40 in 1961), and I would listen to the radio faithfully for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals (however the first 45’s I bought were vocals: Bimbo by Jim Reeves in 1954, The Ballad of Davy Crockett with the flip side Farewell by Fess Parker in 1955, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956). The suspension and threat of expulsion brought no apparent reaction from ! -4 m~~~~~5~i the Black students who, as of press time, remained intent on occupying the buil- ding until their demands are met. The suspensions came at a time when many felt that an agreement between the faculty and Black students was near. Negotiaion Proposals and counter-proposals were offered Sunrday as both sides appeared to be in a stalemate. Randy Bailey, one of the Black students, proposed a negoti- ating team composed of a black representative, two members of the faculty and two members of the administration. The plan was not accepted by the admini- stration. Abrams countered with a plan for the formation of three committees with members from each side to conside/'the African stadies department, the rest of the proposals, and the timing and vacating of Ford Hall. -

The absent presence of progressive rock in the British music press, 1968-1974 Chris Anderton and Chris Atton Abstract The upsurge of academic interest in the genre known as progressive rock has taken much for granted. In particular, little account has been taken of how discourses surrounding progressive rock were deployed in popular culture in the past, especially within the music press. To recover the historical place of the music and its critical reception, we present an analysis of three British weekly music papers of the 1960s and 1970s: Melody Maker, New Musical Express and Sounds. We find that there appears to be relatively little consensus in the papers studied regarding the use and meaning of the term ‘progressive’, pointing to either multiple interpretations or an instability of value judgments and critical claims. Its most common use is to signify musical quality – to connect readers with the breadth of new music being produced at that time, and to indicate a move away from the ‘underground’ scene of the late 1960s. 1 Introduction Beginning in the 1990s there has been an upsurge of academic interest in the genre known as progressive rock, with the appearance of book-length studies by Edward Macan (“Rocking”) and Bill Martin (“Music of Yes”, “Listening”), to which we might add, though not strictly academic, Paul Stump. The 2000s have seen further studies of similar length, amongst them Paul Hegarty & Martin Halliwell, Kevin Holm-Hudson (“Progressive”, “Genesis”) and Edward Macan (“Endless”), in addition to scholarly articles by Jarl A. David Clayton-Thomas remained an enthusiastic blues shouter, and the band still managed to put together lively arrangements, especially on the Top 40 hits "Hi-De-Ho" and "Lucretia Mac Evil." Elsewhere, they re-created the previous album's jazzing up of Laura Nyro ("He's a Runner") and Traffic ("40,000 Headmen"), although their pretentiousness, on the extended "Symphony/Sympathy for the Devil," and their tendency to borrow other artists' better-known material (James Taylor's "Fire and Rain") rather than generating more of their own, were warning signs for the future.
