Singer-Songwriter Ed Sheeran Masterprüfung Musik Singer-Songwriter Ed Sheeran Corina Arquint & Helena Hunziker SR12 25. November 2016 Abstract Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit dem Musikgenre Singer-Songwriter und möglichen Umsetzungen im Musikunterricht der Sekundarstufe 1. Im Zentrum der Arbeit steht der aktuell erfolgreiche britische Singer- Songwriter Ed Sheeran. Zuerst werden Hintergrundinformationen zum Genre und dem Künstler gegeben. Anschliessend wird die Bedeutung der gewählten Thematik für die Lernenden aufgezeigt und mit Bezügen zum Lehrplan begründet. Der Ideenpool zeigt Anknüpfungspunkte für weiterführende Musiklektionen und fächerübergreifenden Unterricht auf. Zu Ed Sheeran’s Songs „The A Team“ und „I See Fire“ wurden Leadsheets für die vokale Umsetzung im Unterricht erstellt. Ausserdem wurde ein Arrangement des Songs „Photograph“ zur musikalischen Umsetzung mit einer Klasse entworfen (Je eine Lead- bzw. Backingvocalstimme für Girls und Boys, Gitarre, HolzXylofon, Metallxylofon, Cello, E-Bass, Klavier, Eggs und Cajòn). Eine Bewegungsanleitung zum Remix von FeliX Jaehn des Songs „Photograph“ ermöglicht einen tänzerischen Zugang. Hier wird eine Verbindung zur elektronischen Musik vollzogen. Weiter sind vier konkrete Unterrichtsideen zum Thema Singer-Songwriter als Kopiervorlage im Anhang zu finden. Weiter wird Ed Sheeran als exemplarisches Beispiel für das Genre vorgestellt. Was ist Singer-Songwriter? Der Begriff „Singer-Songwriter“ bezeichnet MusikerInnen, welche ihre Songs nicht nur selbst singen, sondern auch selbst schreiben. Folgende Merkmale sind für ihre Musik typisch:1 • Die SongteXte der Singer-Songwriter nehmen Bezug auf das Leben und erzählen häufig in einer poetischen Art und Weise von persönlichen Erfahrungen und Alltagsgeschehnissen oder greifen politische oder gesellschaftliche Themen auf. • Singer-Songwriter begleiten ihren Gesang meistens selbst auf der Gitarre oder dem Klavier und stehen ohne Begleitband auf der Bühne. Die Songs entfalten sich somit alleine durch den Klang des Instruments und der Stimme. • Die Konzerte sind einfach und schlicht gehalten. Das Publikum erwartet keine aufwändige Bühnenshow, sondern authentische Geschichten, erzählt von Musikerinnen und Musikern, welche durch ihre natürliche Ausstrahlung den Fokus auf die Musik und Texte legen. Zwischen den Zuhörerenden, der Musik und dem TeXt entsteht dadurch eine direkte Verbindung, die durch die Sängerin oder den Sänger als Medium hergestellt wird. • Das Hauptanliegen von Singer-Songwritern ist, die Stimmung des Textes und der Musik (fröhlich, traurig, enttäuscht, erzürnt etc.) zu vermitteln. Dafür können sie typischerweise auf eine charakteristische Stimme zurückgreifen, mit welcher sie gezielt die Aussage des Songs verstärken. • Der Musikstil des Singer-Songwriter entsprach ursprünglich (gemäss der ersten Singer-Songwriter Vertreter der 1960er-Jahre) einer Mischung aus Folk Country und Blues. Anfänge und Entstehung2 Die Wurzeln der Singer-Songwriter-Tradition gehen viele Jahrhunderte zurück. Durch den Sklavenhandel seit Beginn der Neuzeit (Ende 17. bis Anfang 19. Jahrhundert) wurde dieses Brauchtum nach Amerika gebracht. Die Sklaven verarbeiteten ihr schweres Schicksal, die körperlich harte Arbeit auf den Plantagen, weit weg von ihrer Heimat, in sogenannten „Work Songs“. Durch die Vermischung von schwarzer und weisser Musik entwickelte sich der Blues. Elemente des Blues fanden sich auch in der Folk-Bewegung 1 Vgl. dazu und im Folgenden: Scheytt, 2012. Auf dieser musikalischen Grundlage entstand in den 1960er- Jahre der Begriff Singer-Songwriter, welcher für KünstlerInnen stand, die in ihren Songs vorwiegend die Rassendiskriminierung und den Vietnamkrieg thematisierten und kritisierten. So wurde die Musik als Instrument der Friedens- und Bürgerrechtsbewegung eingesetzt und richtete sich an ein junges Publikum, welches zu einem grossen Teil aus Studierenden bestand. Als einer der ersten und bekanntesten Singer- Songwriter gilt Bob Dylan (*1941), welcher mit seiner Musik politische Statements von sich gab. „Sein Anti- Kriegs-Song ‚Blowin’ In The Wind‘, der von der Sinnlosigkeit des Krieges handelt, hat bis heute nichts von seiner Aktualität verloren“3. Durch die Verleihung des Nobelpreises für Literatur im vergangenen Oktober wurde die Songtexte von Dylans Werk gewürdigt. Als weitere bedeutsame Singer-Songwriter jener Zeit gelten unter anderem Joan Baez, Leonard Cohen oder Joni Mitchell. Auch in der Schweiz konnte man eine ähnliche Bewegung verfolgen. Mani Matter beispielsweise wurde als Liedermacher eine bekannte und wichtige Figur in der Schweizer Musikszene. In den 1970er und 80er Jahren entwickelte sich die Singer-Songwriter-Tradition weiter und wurde neu von der aktuellen Pop- und Rockmusikszene beeinflusst. Viele Singer-Songwriter waren nun nicht mehr nur solistisch unterwegs, sondern kreierten aufwendigere Arrangements und Bühnenshows. Kommerziell schon damals sehr erfolgreich und bis heute bekannt ist Bruce Springsteen, welcher Probleme der Arbeiterklasse thematisierte. Das Genre wurde auch stark von Frauen geprägt. Alanis Morisette, Tracy Champman, Tori Amos und Carole King sind wichtige weibliche Singer-Songwriter dieser Zeit. Singer-Songwriter heute Singer-Songwriter der Gegenwart, wie zum Beispiel Lukas Graham, Adele, Milow, The Passenger oder James Blunt, bilden einen Kontrast zur sonst stark elektronisch geprägten Hitparade. Doch auch bei ihnen sind ab und an synthetische Klänge zu hören. Als eXemplarisches Beispiel für diesen MiX steht der Schweizer Singer-Songwriter Adrian Stern. Zu seinem 2016 neu erschienenen Album mit elektronischen Einflüssen sagt er: „Elektronische Musik hat mich lange kaltgelassen … doch die aktuelle elektronische Musik hat sich dem klassischen Songwriting angenähert.“4 Die Kritik darauf fällt durchweg positiv aus. „Es sind keine Kontraste, die scheinbaren Gegensätze ergänzen sich“, meint die Presse. Weiter habe Stern „seinen Sound aufgefrischt und aktualisiert, ohne das Handgemachte zu vernachlässigen“.5 Die Zukunft des Singer-Songwriter-Genre wird wohl weiter in diese Richtung gehen. Einer der erfolgreichsten und bekanntesten Singer-Songwriter der Gegenwart ist Ed Sheeran. Corina Arquint & Helena Hunziker, Singer-Songwriter am Beispiel von Ed Sheeran Seite 5 Ed Sheeran Biografie/Werke Edward Christopher „Ed“ Sheeran (*1991 in England) war bereits als Kind ein begeisterter Musiker. So begann er mit elf Jahren Gitarre zu spielen und eigene Songs zu schreiben. Mit 14 Jahren folgte die erste Aufnahme und Veröffentlichung einer seiner Songs. Mit der Absicht Bühnenerfahrung zu sammeln, zog es Sheeran mit 17 Jahren in die Grossstadt London. Tatsächlich spielte er eine grosse Zahl von Konzerten; im Jahre 2009 sollten es nach eigenen Angaben 312 Auftritte gewesen sein.6 Diese Erfahrungen machten ihn zu einem versierten Musiker. Im selben Jahr schlägt die Veröffentlichung seines Songs „You Need Me, I Don’t Need You“ so grosse Wellen (das Video erreichte über eine halbe Million Klicks), dass seine Karriere fortan steil bergauf ging. Ganz ohne Werbung oder aufwändiges Marketing gewann Sheeran an Popularität. Harte Arbeit war sein Erfolgsrezept. Selber meint er dazu: “I don’t just put songs out. If I’m

Saw Abstract My thesis analyses the phenomenon of Figwit, a non-speaking elf extra who appeared for only three-seconds in the first instalment of Peter Jackson’s 2001 Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Figwit was initially generated as an online parody by female fans of the movie and as a foil to the ‘swooning, drooling girly’ fandom that was being directed towards the movie’s star actors. However, Figwit evolved into a bona fide, albeit minor, celebrity both on and offline as he attracted attention from worldwide media, a small speaking role in the final movie and genuine adulatory fandom as manifested in the production of Figwit merchandise. In my thesis I argue that Figwit’s creation and consequential community formation reflects a dynamic online-offline dialogic in which pre-existing offline and habitus- generated social practices and distinctions, ideal reflexive individuality and celebrity/fandom were dynamically reproduced within online technological frameworks. I also argue that online activity and interactivity is generated by users to strategically express and engage intensified reflexive individuality, affirming sociability and hyper-social distinctions. In this regard I have also argued that these various potentials and imaginaries were significantly enabled by digital architectures and genres of online communication and interactivity. In particular, I discuss the internet’s capacity for searchability, traceability, and rhetorical framing processes that facilitate continuous re-editing authorship possibilities, which are not necessarily replicable in face-to-face interactions.
