UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA ABSTRACT The title of this paper is “The Descriptive of Moral Value in Ed Sheeran’s Divide Album” discusses about the types of moral value such as loyalty, sincerity, and honesty which are described in the lyric of Ed Sheeran’s Divide album. The purpose of this study is to find out the loyalty, sincerity and honesty morals in the lyric of Ed Sheeran’s Divide album selected song. This study uses qualitative method by collecting, reading the lyrics, and taking the data that related to the topic. The result of this study is there are 5 songs contains loyalty and honesty moral. Afterwards, there are 6 songs also contains sincerity morals. Keywords : song, moral, value
UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA ABSTRAK Judul dari kertas karya ini adalah “The Descriptive of Moral Value in Ed Sheeran’s Divide Album” membahas tentang jenis – jenis nilai moral seperti kesetiaan, ketulusan dan kejujuran yang digambarkan dalam lirik lagu pada album Divide, Ed Sheeran. Tujuan diperbuatnya kertas karya ini adalah untuk menemukan kesetiaan, ketulusan dan kejujuran nilai moral dalam lirik lagu pada album Divide, Ed Sheeran. Kertas karya ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan mengumpulkan, membaca lirik, dan mengambil data sesuai dengan topic tersebut. Hasil dari kertas karya ini adalah ada 5 lagu yang mengandung kesetiaan dan dan kejujuran moral. Setelah itu, ada 6 lagu yang mengandung ketulusan moral.

1.1 Background of the study
Literature is a written works by expressing the idea and feelings
that have an artistic value. According to Wellek and Warren (1963:22)
state that the term literature seems best if we limit it to the art of literature,
that is, to imaginative literature. They also says that literature is also
produced by imagination of the author. Literature is not just a document of
facts, it is not just the collection of real events though it may happen in
real life. Literature can create its own world a product of unlimited
imagination.
People create many kinds of literature. Mostly they say it by
writing a poetry and add it with a melodies and rhythm to complete that
creation which the author know it is song as part of literature.Through the
song, people can wreak their emotion and deep expression of something
that their feel and taken out with a song. That’s why the composer usually
put the meaning of the song. A knowledge needs to understand the
meaning of the song.
The song also has a moral value as way to expressing the meaning
of the expression or idea. A moral value not only found in a short story,
novels, or any written works. It can finding in a lyrics of the song.
Through the song, a writer can says feeling. A song writer also
combinesthe lyrics with imaginary words that will forms to a phrase or

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA idiom. From that part, the author takes a moral value based of lyrics of the
song.
Moral value is connected to fundamental human emotion and
experience that motivated us. Based on W.Poespropodjo (1999:102)says
that morality is a qualities of human actions which show that deeds right or
wrong, good or bad. Morality includes good or bad human action. Song is
a media to shared human action of experience. Much song of today is a
love song. A love song always heard in every season. Neither teenagers
nor old people are like to listens a love song because every love songs
have different values.
The Author chooses Divide Album of Ed Sheeran’s song to
describing that moral value.This album was released on 3 March 2017
through Asylum Records and Atlantic Records. Some songs of the album
are mostly heard in every radio. Some songs like Castle on The Hill and
Shape of You had been trending topic worldwide and also top iTunes since
debuted. Ed Sheeran wrote these songs for expressing his falling love with
a girl. So this album is meaning full to a lover and had much moral values
that hope will be inspire listeners.
1.2 Problem of the study

The purpose of this study is to find out :

In the lyric of Ed Sheeran’s Divide album selected song.
1.4 Scope of the study
There are many love songs in this era. This album released sixteen
songs to listen. These songs have many idioms that also have moral values
in every lyric. The author chooses six songs to describing. There are: Dive,
Shape of You, Perfect, Happier, How Would You Feel, Nancy Mulligan,
1.5 Methods of the study
This study uses qualitative method by collecting, reading the lyrics,
and taking the data that related to the topic. Beside that the author also use
internet to get more information of the song and definition of moral values.
1.6 Reason for choosing the topic
The author chooses this topic because several songs are likely
played since the album debuted until now. Ed Sheeran always writes a
UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA song with deeply meaning for every listener. He had his own figurative language to expressing his feeling in every lyrics of his song. So, the author interested to describing the moral values in his songs.

2.1 Definition Of Moral Values
A. Moral
According toKamusBesarBahasa Indonesia. (doctrine of) good
or bad accepted publicy concerning deeds, attitudes, duties,
etcetera. (ajarantentangbaikburuk yang
diterimaumummengenaiperbuatan, sikap, kewajiban,
dansebagainya). Moral is an action, behavior or deeds of human on
interaction.Human need moral to communicate and socialize. As a
social beings, human communicated by their own action. To be a
good human a good personality is really need. It can showed by
human’s moral. An action of human usually noticed by someone
else when they met for the first time.
According to Carol K. Sigelman (1990:330), the term moral
implies an ability they are (1). To distinguish right from wrong,
(2) to act on this distinction, and (3) to experience pride when one
does the right thing and guilt or shame when one does not. Carol K.
Sigelman also stated that there are three components of morality.
They are:

concern for other feelings that surround right or wrong actions and that
motivate thoughts actions. b. A cognitive component focuses on the way conceptualize right and
wrong and make decisions about how to behave. c. A behavioral component reflects how we actually behave when for
example we do or we have something that we know is bad or wrong, or
help a needy person.
A morality contains (1) beliefs about the nature of the man, (2) belief about ideals, about what is good or desirable or worthy or pursuit for its own sake, (3) rules laying downs what ought to done and (4) motives that includes us to choose the right or the wrong course. We learn as children that we should be unselfish, that should not tell lies. (Paul Edwards: 1967:
150).
B. Value
Value (ethic) is a person principle or standards of behavior. Value is important to social human. Its can described as treating actions .Pepper
(1958:7) stated that values is everything about good or bad. According to
Kluckhohn (1951:399) values as concepts that regulate “impulse satisfaction in accord with the whole array of hierarchical, enduring goals of the personality and sociocultural system for order, the need for
UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA respecting the interests of others and of the group as a whole in social living”.
Based on Benninga (1991:131), the term “values” may suggest that judgments of right and wrong, lofty and base, just and unjust, and more personal preferences, that thing are useful as individuals happens to value them.
C. Moral Value
Moral is a knowledge that involved a human character within cultured, always associated with values, but not all values are moral values can be said as a rule in society life that used as guidelines in daily activity or life. It concern with a right or wrong relationship of people with each other. Based on Oxford Advances Learner’s Dictionary by Hornby
(2010:959), moral relates to the standard or principles of a good behavior.
So, moral value formed to make people had a good personality.
There are four characteristic of moral value. There are as following:
a. Moral value is related with responsibility
Moral value is related with human personality, but
beside moral value also automatically cansayother
values.Moral value makes people wrongor not, because
he/she has responsibility.Especially moral value is

value just can be real inaction wholly if
itbecameresponsibility oftheinvolvedperson. b. Moral value is related with pure heart
All values need tomake it real.Because it has
persuasive power, it shouldbe practice. For
example,aesthetic value, itshould be practiced,playmusic
composition or others.After that the result of it, painting
want tobeshowed,and musicwant tobelistened. To make
moral valueto be real, It’scan beappealedfrom pure heart.
One of special characteristicsofmoralvaluesisthis value
willeffectvoice ofpure hearttoaccuseus ifopposemoral value
and praise us if make moral value. c. Obligation
Moral value obligates us absolutely and it can’t
becompromised. Other values need to be real and admitted,
for example, aesthetic value. Educative and cultural person
will admit and enjoying aesthetic value. But indifferent
people can’t we blame. Moral value obligates us as such,
without requirement. For example, honesty orders us to
return thing that borrowed, like or not, because moral value
contains an imperative category. In other value for

must try hard. It’s a must to be champion, but there is
alimitation.
d. Formality
Moral value is not stand-alonewithout other value.
Althoughmoral valueis top value that wemustappreciate,but
it is not in top without other value.Moral values didnot
separate with other values. For example, a
sellerappliesmoral values all at once with apply economic
values. Moral valuesare nothing without other values. It is
form of formality.(Bertens,2000:143-147)
2.2 Types of moral values
According to Webster (1981) there are twelve types of
moral values :
1. Bravery
Bravery is face(something involving possible unfortunate or
disastrousconsequences)or endure (as hardship) use with self-control
and mastery of tearand often with a particular objective in vie. Bravery
is able to meet danger orendure pain or hardship without giving in to
fear. Bravery is arising from orsuggestive or mastery of fear and

p.269).
2. Enthusiasm
Enthusiasm is strong excitement of feeling on behalf of a cause of
subject,something that inspires or is pursued or regarded with ardent
zeal or fervor.Enthusiast is a person who is or believestohimself to be
inspired or possessed bydivine power or spirit, or a person who is
visionary, extravagant, or excessively zealous in his religious views or
emotion. While enthusiastic is relating toenthusiasm or inspired
preaching. Enthusiasm is havingan ardent, reception,responsive,
temperament or tending to give oneself wholly to whatever
engagesone’s interest or liking. (Webster: 1981 p.757).
3. Kindhearted
Kind is the equivalent of what has been offered or received. Kind is
applyingmore often to the disposition to sympathy and helpfulness.
Kindly is stressingmore the expression of the sympathetic, helpful
nature, mood or impulse (a kindperson with a kindly interest in the
problem of other). Kindhearted is havingsympathetic nature: Humane,
compassionate. Kindheartedness is the quality orstate of being
kindhearted. (Webster: 1981 p.1243).

Honesty is estimable character; fairness and straight forwardness of
conduct oradherence to the fact. Honesty is freedom from subterfuge
or duplicity,truthfulness, and sincerity. (Webster: 1981 p.1086).
5. Love and Affection
Love is fell affection for. Love is a communications code word for the
letter. Loveis fell referent adoration for (God). (Webster: 1981 p.1340).
Affection is action of affection or state of being affected. Affection is
kind feeling tender attachment:love, good, will. Affection is a strong
emotion or passion (as anger, fear orhatred); feeling aspect of
consciousness (as in pleasure or displeasure); to bend of mind: feeling
or natural impulse swaying the mind: propensity, disposition.(Webster:
1981 p.35).
6. Loyalty
Loyalty is loyal manner. Loyalnessis the quality, state, or an instance
of beingloyal; fidelity or tenacious adherence. Loyal is faithful and the
devoted to aprivate person; faithful or tenacious in adherence to s
cause, ideal, practice orcustom. (Webster: 1981 p.1342)
7. Peace-Loving
Peace is harmony in human or personal relation.A mental or spiritual
conditionmarked by freedom from disturbance or oppressive thoughts

section or attitude.(Webster: 1981 p.1340)
8. Perseverance
Perseverance is the action or the fact or an instance of persevering,
continued orsteadfast pursuit or prosecution of an undertaking or aim.
Perseverance is thecondition or power of persevering, persistence in
the pursuit of objectives orprosecution of any project. Perseverant is
able or willing to persevere. (Webster:1981 p 1685)
9. Sacrificing for Other
Sacrifice is something consecrated and offered to God or to a divinity
or animmolated victim or an offering of any kind laid on an altar or
otherwisepresented in the way of religious, thanksgiving, atonement,
or conciliation.(Webster: 1981 p.1996)
10. Self-Confidence
Self-Confidence is Confident in one self. Self-confident is confident of
one’s ownstrength or ability. (Webster: 1981 p.2059).
11. Sincerity
Sincerity is the quality or state of being sincere; an expression of a
sincere feeling.(Webster: 1981 p.2122)

Strong is able tobear or endure; able to with-stand stress or violence;
having orexhibiting moral or intellectual force, endurance or
vigor.(Webster: 1981 p.2265).Belief is a state or habit of mind in
which trust, confidence, reliance, is place insome person or thing.
Belief is something believed, statement or body of statement held by
the advocates of any class of views; conviction of the truth of some
statement or the reality of some being or phenomenon, especially
whenbased on an examination of the ground for accepting it as true or
real. (Webster:1981 p.200)
2.3 Song Lyrics
Song is a part of literature. Based on English Oxford Dictionary,
song is short poem or other set of words set to music or meant to be sung.
Song also contains a lyrics. According to Little (1970:174) lyric derived
from Greek “Lyricos” meaning “ singing to the lyres”, “the rhythm of the
entire globe written out likepoetry”. The song lyric is specifically intended
for singing. This intention affectsdiction, content and stanza form. The
song lyric is particularly unified and simple.A tune has its own emotional
character, and it is words will need to be of words
and music.

Risdianto(2011:32) there are five element of poetry which to be a good poem, they are :
1. Figure of Speech
Figurative language or figure of speech is a poet’s expression of his imagination. According to Perrine (1963: 54) figurative language is broadly defined as any way of saying something other than ordinary way. Figure of speechis a deviation from the usual form of expression or common way of thinking in an effort to obtain a more intense effect of disclosure. Figurative language consists 12 kinds, they are: simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, synecdoche,metonymy, symbol, allegory, paradox, hyperbola, understatement, ironyRisdianto,(2011:33-36).
2. Imagery
Imagery is one of the literary elements that also important in the poetry.The clear explanation of imagery is in below: Imagery is a peculiarly effective way of evoking vivid experience, and since it may be used by the poet in such away as to convey emotion and suggest ideas as well as to cause a mentalreproduction of sensations, it is an invaluable resource of the poet (Perrine,1963:48).

Rhythm refers to any wavelike recurrence of motion or sound. In speech itis the natural rise and fall of language. All language is to some degree rhythmical, for all language involves some kind of alternation between stressed and unstressedsyllables (Perrine, 1963:162).
4. Rhyme
Risdianto (2011:42-43) stated that rhyme is two words that sound alike, the vowel sound of two words is the same, but the initial consonant sound is different. Arhyme is a 15repetition of similar sounds in two or more words, most often at theend of lines in poems or songs.
5. Tone
Tone may be defined as the writer or speaker attitude toward his subject, his audience, or himself. It is the emotional coloring or the emotional meaning, of thework, and is an extremely important part of the full meaning. A correctinterpretation of his tone will be an important part of understanding his fullmeaning. In poetry tone is likewise important
(Perrine, 1963:135). Tone also canbe defined an abstraction the singer make from the detail of a poem language, theuse of particular of words and sentences pattern, of imagery and figurativelanguage.
From the explanation above, it can be concluded that song lyric issymbolic reaction of human. It is a response of everything that happened and felt by

Symbol is used by human to understand a reality cannot be seendirectly, but it can be seen and felt by human senses. This stimulus is processedand created by mind. Then, the concept or the specific interpretation will beformed a specific meaning appropriate with what will be pronounced.

These lyrics telling that she is a mystery for him. He
revealed that wherever he goes, he never find a girl like that girl.
And he heard that she has lead people on. The bold word is the
loyalty moral which the author’s found. It’s explains how faithful
he is because wherever he goes, he never find a girl like that girl.
3.1.3 Shape Of You
(1) One week in we let the story begin
We're going out on our first date (mmmm)
These lyrics telling that after he and her met a club, he let
the story begin on one week then they going their first date.
The bold word is the loyaltymoral which the author’s found.

These lyrics telling that they are so in love. They against all
odds together. He make sure that everything will be alright as
long as they holding hands (through everything together). The
bold word is the loyalty moral which the author’s found. It’s
explains that he just want her to hold his hand and he wants to
be her man for through everything together.
3.1.5 How Would You Feel
(1) You are the one girl
And you know that it's true
I'm feeling younger
Every time that I'm alone with you

knows that’s true. He’s feeling younger every time he with her.
The bold word is loyalty moral. Because, he said that she’s the
only girl he had and it represented loyalness.
3.1.6 Nancy Mulligan
(1) She and I went on the run
Don't care about religion
I'm gonna marry the woman I love
These lyrics telling us that she and he went on the run or
run away from home. They don’t care about their religion then
he married her. The bold word is loyalty moral. It because of
they went out from home for married and live together.
(2) From her snow white streak in her jet black hair
Over sixty years I've been loving her
Now we're sat by the fire, in our old armchairs
You know Nancy I adore ya
These lyric telling that until they have been white hair and
It been sixty years old together. And now they were sat by the
fire, in their old armchairs. And he told that he adore Nancy.

3.2.1 Dive

These lyrics telling about he could fall or fly , live or die
just because of her. He sincerely sacrifice to giving his all even
jumping harder than 10,000 rocks on the lake. The bold word is
sincerity moral because of his sincere feels of being hurt for
her.
3.2.2 Perfect
(1) I will not give you up this time
But darling, just kiss me slow
Your heart is all I own

when they in love, he said that her hearts is all his own. The
bold word is sincerity moral of trying to not let her giving up.

I whispered underneath my breath
But you heard it, you look perfect tonight
These lyric telling about one day they were romantic

4.1 Conclusion
Based on the results of describing Ed Sheeran’s lyric, the author
conclude that there are types moral values contains in Ed Sheeran’s Divide
album. Those six songs are telling about Ed Sheeran and his related person
such as his grandparents, his girlfriend or his ex. All of those songs are
romantic song. Most of them consist only 1 or 2 paragraph of type of
moral values. From description above, the author found 6 songs which
contains honesty moral based on some lyrics. Moreover, the author found
5 songs contains loyalty moral and also 5 songs contains sincerity moral.
In the loyalty and honesty morals there were same lyrics which the author
taken of its moral value. But they have different types of moral values.
4.2 Suggestion
Song giving peacefulness, calmness and warmness. There are more
benefit that we can take from song such as the moral values. Do not just
listen a music,feel the song and read the lyrics. Because every song had
