Signed : Date : UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA ABSTRACT The title of this paper is “The Descriptive of Moral Value in Ed Sheeran’s Divide Album” discusses about the types of moral value such as loyalty, sincerity, and honesty which are described in the lyric of Ed Sheeran’s Divide album. The purpose of this study is to find out the loyalty, sincerity and honesty morals in the lyric of Ed Sheeran’s Divide album selected song. This study uses qualitative method by collecting, reading the lyrics, and taking the data that related to the topic. The result of this study is there are 5 songs contains loyalty and honesty moral. Afterwards, there are 6 songs also contains sincerity morals. Keywords : song, moral, value UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA ABSTRAK Judul dari kertas karya ini adalah “The Descriptive of Moral Value in Ed Sheeran’s Divide Album” membahas tentang jenis – jenis nilai moral seperti kesetiaan, ketulusan dan kejujuran yang digambarkan dalam lirik lagu pada album Divide, Ed Sheeran. Tujuan diperbuatnya kertas karya ini adalah untuk menemukan kesetiaan, ketulusan dan kejujuran nilai moral dalam lirik lagu pada album Divide, Ed Sheeran. Kertas karya ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan mengumpulkan, membaca lirik, dan mengambil data sesuai dengan topic tersebut. Hasil dari kertas karya ini adalah ada 5 lagu yang mengandung kesetiaan dan dan kejujuran moral. Setelah itu, ada 6 lagu yang mengandung ketulusan moral. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the study Literature is a written works by expressing the idea and feelings that have an artistic value. According to Wellek and Warren (1963:22) state that the term literature seems best if we limit it to the art of literature, that is, to imaginative literature. They also says that literature is also produced by imagination of the author. Literature is not just a document of facts, it is not just the collection of real events though it may happen in real life. Literature can create its own world a product of unlimited imagination. People create many kinds of literature. Mostly they say it by writing a poetry and add it with a melodies and rhythm to complete that creation which the author know it is song as part of literature.Through the song, people can wreak their emotion and deep expression of something that their feel and taken out with a song. That’s why the composer usually put the meaning of the song. A knowledge needs to understand the meaning of the song. The song also has a moral value as way to expressing the meaning of the expression or idea. A moral value not only found in a short story, novels, or any written works. It can finding in a lyrics of the song. Through the song, a writer can says feeling. A song writer also combinesthe lyrics with imaginary words that will forms to a phrase or 1 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA idiom. From that part, the author takes a moral value based of lyrics of the song. Moral value is connected to fundamental human emotion and experience that motivated us. Based on W.Poespropodjo (1999:102)says that morality is a qualities of human actions which show that deeds right or wrong, good or bad. Morality includes good or bad human action. Song is a media to shared human action of experience. Much song of today is a love song. A love song always heard in every season. Neither teenagers nor old people are like to listens a love song because every love songs have different values. The Author chooses Divide Album of Ed Sheeran’s song to describing that moral value.This album was released on 3 March 2017 through Asylum Records and Atlantic Records. Some songs of the album are mostly heard in every radio. Some songs like Castle on The Hill and Shape of You had been trending topic worldwide and also top iTunes since debuted. Ed Sheeran wrote these songs for expressing his falling love with a girl. So this album is meaning full to a lover and had much moral values that hope will be inspire listeners. 1.2 Problem of the study 1. How isLoyaltydescribed in Ed Sheeran’s Divide album? 2.
