The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, March 20, 2019 * The Boston Globe What Mike Trout’s $430m extension might mean for Mookie Betts’s future Peter Abraham FORT MYERS, Fla. — The road signs are now in place, markers that the Red Sox and Mookie Betts can follow to get to what would be the richest contract in Boston sports history. Manny Machado took 10 years and $300 million from the San Diego Padres. Bryce Harper was next with a record-setting 13-year, $330 million contract to play for the Philadelphia Phillies. Then on Tuesday came the news that Mike Trout was closing in on an extension with the Los Angeles Angels that would pay him $360 million over 10 years after his current deal expires in two seasons. For the 26-year-old Betts, those are his peers. Harper and Machado are 26, and Trout is 27. From a statistical perspective, Betts stands with Trout. Or at least as close as anyone can stand with Trout. As calculated by Baseball-Reference.com, Betts has 32.9 WAR over his four full seasons in the majors. Only Trout (36.6) has more over that same period. Machado (23.2) is seventh, and Harper a surprising 23rd with 17.5. The difference is that Trout has been outlandishly valuable for seven full seasons. Betts essentially shrugged when asked his opinion of the Harper and Machado deals. “We’re all different players,” he said after Harper signed. “We all have different things that are important. Good for those guys.” Betts had good reason not to overreact.

  • The Astros' Sign-Stealing Scandal
The Astros’ Sign-Stealing Scandal Major League Baseball (MLB) fosters an extremely competitive environment. Tens of millions of dollars in salary (and endorsements) can hang in the balance, depending on whether a player performs well or poorly. Likewise, hundreds of millions of dollars of value are at stake for the owners as teams vie for World Series glory. Plus, fans, players and owners just want their team to win. And everyone hates to lose! It is no surprise, then, that the history of big-time baseball is dotted with cheating scandals ranging from the Black Sox scandal of 1919 (“Say it ain’t so, Joe!”), to Gaylord Perry’s spitter, to the corked bats of Albert Belle and Sammy Sosa, to the widespread use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) in the 1990s and early 2000s. Now, the Houston Astros have joined this inglorious list. Catchers signal to pitchers which type of pitch to throw, typically by holding down a certain number of fingers on their non-gloved hand between their legs as they crouch behind the plate. It is typically not as simple as just one finger for a fastball and two for a curve, but not a lot more complicated than that. In September 2016, an Astros intern named Derek Vigoa gave a PowerPoint presentation to general manager Jeff Luhnow that featured an Excel-based application that was programmed with an algorithm. The algorithm was designed to (and could) decode the pitching signs that opposing teams’ catchers flashed to their pitchers. The Astros called it “Codebreaker.” One Astros employee referred to the sign- stealing system that evolved as the “dark arts.”1 MLB rules allowed a runner standing on second base to steal signs and relay them to the batter, but the MLB rules strictly forbade using electronic means to decipher signs.

The league’s players have seen their percentage share of earnings decrease even as league revenues have reached an all-time high.

    766. Wyatt Earp 1870 Signed Subpoena Resourceful, to say the very least, Wyatt Earp wore the hat of farmer, buffalo hunter, miner and boxing referee (among other endeavors) long before embrac- ing his role at the O.K. Corral. The offered display is an incredibly scarce “Wild West” find: a legal docu- ment signed by Earp. To begin with, Earp’s penning is among the most rare of men of his ilk. Sweetening the pot further is the fact that this bold signature was exe- cuted in a lawman’s capacity. All of 21 years old with volumes of lawless activity still years ahead, Earp, acting as the Barton County, Missouri local constable, penned this subpoena to be served to one Mr. Thomas G. Harvey, informing said party that he would have to testify within a fortnight in the case of Missouri vs. Thomas Brown. Arranged in a handsome 25-3/4 x 17- 1/2” wooden frame, the 7-3/4 x 4-3/4” original docu- ment (shown on the reverse, penned entirely in Earp’s hand) is displayed below a photocopy of the front so that both sides can be viewed simultaneously. On the reverse, Earp has inscribed: “I have served the within summons upon the within named Thomas G. Harvey by reading the same to him this Feb 28, 1870 - W.S. Earp, Const.” The black-ink fountain pen content is crisply executed with Earp’s endorsement projecting (“9-10”) quality. The piece is affected by a small tear at the far left, (3) tiny slashes near the upper portion and a horizontal compacting fold.
