8 SATURDAY 9TH / SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 2019 JACK BRENNAN – THE TOAST OF CLON

Full back and winger, Jack Brennan, and his u16s Clon team mates have been making great progress this season. Jack has made great strides with his place kicking and has scored lots of tries already this campaign, including four at home against Ashbourne. We caught up with him to get the inside track on the Clon youth set-up.

Jack, when and why did you start playing rugby? I started when I was 5 years old. I joined because rugby was always on the television in my house and I was always watching it. It was also coming up to the World Cup so I decided I would like to give rugby a try.

Which is your favourite position? My favourite position is probably full-back. I like full-back because when you get the ball you have time to think and have some running room. I sometimes play winger but I definitely prefer full- back. I feel at full-back you are a lot more involved in the plays.

What’s the most important thing about place kicking, in your opinion? In my opinion, the most important thing about place-kicking is the psychological side because if you cannot control your mind you cannot control the ball. Otherwise you panic and don't connect with the ball properly or it does not go in the direction you want it to. You also have to stay calm so you do not rush the kick and not hit it right. Practice also helps!

What’s your favourite rugby memory so far? My favourite memory is definitely our quarter-final League game against Lansdowne last season at the Aviva. Coming into the match we were considered the underdogs but after a quick start with two tries everyone believed we could do it. It went right down to the wire but when we got a last minute try, everyone went mad. We were all delighted and the atmosphere was electric. The whole squad really played their best and it was one of our best performances ever. We even went on to make the final!

What is your favourite food after a game? My favourite food after a game is probably chicken soup because it is warm and I would probably have some fruit or anything healthy or anything that has protein in it. To drink, if it was a freezing day, I would probably have hot chocolate or if it wasn't too cold, I would have a glass of milk or water.

What was your favourite thing about the team’s tour to Wales? The team’s tour to Wales was amazing and was probably one of the best weekends of my life. It’s hard to pick a favourite moment because all of it was great but if I have to pick one thing it was after the match, going go-karting and then getting chips and watching the All-Ireland final. But overall, it was a great trip and a great success.

9 SATURDAY 9TH / SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 2019 Who on your team has the worst taste in music? It has to be our Captain, Luke Swayne! I remember we were in the gym and he started to play music, it was the worst music I have ever heard. It wasn’t on for long before it was switched off! [Don’t mess with the Captain, Jack!]

Who on your team do you not like to tackle? There are a few big lads on our team that I don't like to tackle in training but if I had to pick one it would probably be big Danny. I remember one time when I went to tackle him, he just pushed me off him as if it was nothing. Another player is John because he has really quick feet and is also really strong so it’s really hard to tackle him.

Who is favourite Leinster or Ireland player? My favourite Ireland player is probably Jordan Larmour because he has really quick feet and whenever he has the ball, you always feel that he can get through with his footwork. I also like him because he plays in my position.

What would you say is the best thing about Clondalkin RFC? In my opinion, the best thing about Clondalkin RFC is the people. All the coaches are helpful and supportive. As well as that, my teammates are great and we get along with each other. Our coaches also provide us with the training and advice we need and give us the best opportunity to be the best players that we can be, by bringing us to the gym and getting us talks about mental health and nutrition. Even when I have bad games, everyone is supportive or recently I wasn’t doing so well with place kicking but people supported me and helped me and now I'm back on form!

10 SATURDAY 9TH / SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 2019 NO CHANGE AT RUGBY’S TOP TABLE

So the 9th Rugby World Cup is over. Sayonara turn up. Tonga were the only side at the 2019 to a mixed bag. Lots of good games. An upset World Cup who had no players in their original or two here and there (take a bow, Uruguay 31-man squad that played club rugby and Japan) and enthusiastic crowds mimicking domestically. Thanks to grants, the players who Freddie Mercury with gusto, crowds who represented the national team at the thankfully didn’t have to witness any 100-nil tournament received €391 a week each. But demolition jobs. Some things didn’t go so well many Tongans were pressured by their clubs to of course, which is to be expected, although stay away. After the 2011 Rugby World Cup in typhoon season should have been one issue New Zealand, former Racing Metro backs coach that could have been planned for. Simon Mannix claimed that the club paid off players from the Pacific Islands not to play for Ireland, once again, keep their record intact of their countries. The club gave them a cheque if never having reached a semi-final while the they stayed. And eight years on, it looks like Welsh reached their fourth in nine attempts. nothing has changed. Sigh. And there were no surprises when it came to the teams who made it to the business end of the action. Only five teams had ever made it to a final in previous editions and, predictably, two of those five were there again this time around.

World Rugby made a big song and dance about spreading rugby’s message by staging the tournament in Japan - and the hosts’ current squad have certainly made great strides on the field - but it’s clear that the talk of expanding the game beyond the traditional few is just that - talk. It remains an elite club with little chance of ‘the rest’ bridging the gap.

A key goal for any team is to get your best players on the pitch. Rassie Erasmus, the boss of champions South Africa, made it a key condition when taking the job that overseas- based players had to be eligible to play for the Tonga assistant coach Pita Alatini said they're national team. And look how it paid off. Could still in the same position. "That's the challenge the Springboks have done it without Faf de we're always going to have, where players get Klerk of Sale or Cheslin Kolbe of Toulouse? The offered a better contract to stay on, rather than odds are against. to go to the World Cup. We understand that from the point of view of a player who needs to But then there’s the flip side. Countries like look after his family. It's their choice and we Tonga struggle to get their best players to even can only do so much."

11 SATURDAY 9TH / SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 2019 And it’s a similar story with the other island Take Charles Piutau who last played for New nations. Flying Samoan wing Belgium Zealand in 2015. Recognised as one of the best Tuatagaloa is currently without a club contract backs in England (and previously with Ulster), after being made to choose between club and he was barred from playing for Tonga because country by a French team reluctant to support he failed to meet eligibility regulations that his international ambitions. And yet he went ahead and took So, no matter where the Rugby World Cup is great pride in representing his country. played, the organisers say all the right things about their commitment to growing the game. And they never been a problem for the islanders, getting need to start by facilitating the nations further access to the best players on the other hand down the pecking order who are trying to get continues to be a challenge. There’s have become a nuisance to Tier 2 nations. an island nation in the Atlantic that dreams of being there too.

12 SATURDAY 9TH / SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 2019 PLAYER PROFILE: GARETH BLACK

I joined the club when I was 13 years old and I played with the 16s at first. When the coaches realised my age they moved me down and I played with the 14s team. I used to play on the wing and then the centre and I have gradually moved in towards the pack where I now pack down as prop - my true home in rugby. I was coached by Mick O’Brien in my first year then Winston Jebb at 16s and 17s and then Ken McMahon, Dan Fitz and the list goes on to where I am now coached by Dave and Philly. I am now a dozen years playing for “The Clon”. Time flies, won loads & lost a few!

Clondalkin Rugby Club THE FACILITIES OF CRFC

A very big welcome to all our visitors today, we do not expect you to appreciate all the work that has gone into the club this off-season however, we do expect the “Clon folk” to be surprised at the changes they will see.

The first thing you will notice is the first team pitch has moved and is now bigger wider & longer , I am glad I have retired and do not have to try to play on it. Eamon & John Stapleton have undertaken a lot of work to achieve this and we are extremely grateful and club’s pitches are when compared to most very impressed. Greg Phillips aided by a clubs apart from the RDS I am struggling to number of the U14’s parents have painted the remember a better surface. This does not posts several times.
