721. Incorporating Conduit for Future Fiber in City Projects

The Department of Information Technology (DoIT) is working to expand the City fiber network footprint over time, to connect additional City facilities to the fiber network as well as to offer fiber-based services to key institutional partners and commercial customers in Pasadena. DoIT seeks to leverage other projects in the public right-of-way that may provide joint trench opportunities for low cost placement of a conduit for fiber. The following types of projects are of greatest interest:  Projects involving trenching or boring in the right of way for placement of other types of conduit (e.g., other communications, power, water)  Projects adjacent to City facilities  Projects along commercial business corridors  Projects related to major new commercial development

DoIT requests early notice of these types of projects, so that it can evaluate the location, identify funding, and where appropriate include a conduit for City fiber in the design process. Change orders after contracts have been executed typically involve significantly higher costs than if the conduit is included in the initial scope of work. DoIT contact: Jonathan Lang, Senior IT Project Manager, x8261 or via email at [email protected].
