We started from near Big-Bore and went north through Sporting Clays. When we hit the north fence, we followed it west. It seems that the wildlife keep a barely passable trail along the fence line. At about the north-east corner we found a tree had taken down the fence in what is usually a small bit of open water, and a lot of animals were taking advantage of the easy crossing. Proceeding south we came to the much larger swamp that has two “islands” within it. We followed deer tracks in, and it was soon apparent that the place was a maze of game trails leading every which way. Looking east, from continued on page 25-26… the NW corner.

8 How to Take the Gun Out of the Box Simple Strategies for Beginners By CJ Barringer, NRA Instructor Wear a Watch Like John Wick...Or SpecOps How do you wear your watch? Most people wear their watches, those that wear watches, on the wrist of their non-dominant hand. Most folks are right-handed (85% approximately) so they tend to wear their watches on their left wrist with the buckle on the inside of the wrist and the face of the watch on the outside. If you watched the original John Wick, Wick wore his watch with the face on the inside and the buckle on the outside. According to one article, Keanu Reeves learned that was how soldiers, Special Operators, wore their watches. Wick’s watch was a Carl F. Bucherer Manero Autodate with an alligator strap. It is water resistant which probably came in handy when Wick was holding the Bad Guy’s (BG) head under water in the bathhouse scene. However, I assume that most operators do not wear a watch that costs about as much as a Jeep or a Lexus. Why do SOF operators wear their watches upside down? To be clear, not all do. Like anything else, people always have different ideas, opinions, and ways of doing things. Here are some of the tactical (and not so tactical) reasons given: 1. Avoiding any glint, flash or reflection off the screen (sunlight or moonlight) so you don’t give away you position or be mistaken for a sniper scope. 2. Hiding the radium glow of the watch numbers and markings. 3. Checking the time more easily while aiming your weapon (no repositioning), driving a vehicle (holding on to the wheel – a reason many race car drivers wear their watches this way) or flying an aircraft (holding on the yoke). 4. Protecting the screen from cracking or breaking and making noise (“if you bang a glass watch face against anything that weighs more than a ton, the glass will break”). 5. Wearing tactical gloves with the watch upside down is more comfortable. 6. Maintaining military fashion (because it’s cool). I have a friend, Jack (OK, not his real name because I do NOT want to annoy him!), retired Army, Secret Squirrel-type Operator, ex-PD, who not only wears his watch with the face on the inside of his wrist but on his dominant side. He reasons that if someone asks him the time, he never has to look down, or take his eyes of the individual. Instead, he brings his right arm up into his own field of vision. He can look at his watch and keep the person in sight as well. With his arm up at eye-level, Jack is automatically in a protective stance. He is in a ready mode. If the person turns out to be a BG, and tries to make a move, he will be ready. Jack is expert in Judo, JuJitsu and Krav Maga, so he’s pretty much always ready. Many operators only wear analog watches, not digital. An analog watch can be used as a compass. They also recommend wind up watches, with no batteries, buttons or functions that can go “beep” when you need silence. PUPPY FAIR starts in March Come to Buy or Bring Your Puppies to Sell! Starting in Rescue shelter April pups are welcome too!

Rubs like this are everywhere in the big swamp.

On the “small island.” …continued from page 6 Our deer friends led us to the small island, where it appears that they like to nibble the buds off the woody-brush growing amongst the mostly dead trees. On the big island is a beautiful grove of mature Oaks, that is very open at ground level. I wasn’t too surprising that with little growth in the understory, there are almost no animal tracks. continued on next page…

Standing along the southern fence, and about to walk out onto Reed Lake. The survey Marker is just to my right.

…continued From there we followed the southern fence line east through a difficult tangle of reeds & deadfall, towards Reed Lake. The heavy snow had pushed the ice down and water was seeping up. It was probably perfectly safe, but 4 inches of water/slush turned us from a direct path to the dock, and we followed the shore a little more before crossing. Finally, it was back to the trucks before stopping in the Clubhouse for our first bar-burger in almost a year. Delicious! ~Dave Leonard, Editor, #354

Nearing the end of our little journey and getting hungry.
