The Pilots landed three players on the All-WCC first team, including redshirt senior Megan Rapinoe, who earned WCC Player of the Year honors. Rapinoe was joined on the all-conference first team by teammates sophomore Sophie Schmidt and freshman Danielle Foxhoven, who was selected as the WCC Freshman of the Year. Rounding out this year’s awards was the Uni- versity of San Diego senior goalkeeper Brittany Cameron, who earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Portland Head Coach Garrett Smith took home his second consecutive Coach of the Year accolade. Rapinoe, who has faced a tremendous amount of adversity the past two seasons with season-ending knee injuries in 2006 and 2007, has enjoyed a standout senior season. The Redding, CA native led the WCC during conference play with five assists, while scoring three goals. Ra- pinoe is the seventh Pilot in WCC history to garner the league’s Player of the Year award, and the second straight, following former UP standouts Angie Woznuk (2007), Christine Sinclair (2005, 04, 02), Erin Misaki (2000), Justi Baumgardt (1996), Shannon MacMillan (1995, 93), and Tiffeny Milbrett (1994, 92).

  • Under-20 Women's World Cup Casts Shadow on College Cup Page 1 of 4
ESPN.com - Under-20 Women's World Cup casts shadow on College Cup Page 1 of 4 ESPN.com: NCAA [Print without images] Tuesday, August 19, 2008 Under-20 Women's World Cup casts shadow on College Cup By Graham Hays ESPN.com This season in women's college soccer promises to put a whole new spin on the old adage that championships are won and lost based on what players do during the summer. As it now stands, the outcome of the College Cup might well hinge on what a select handful of players do during the first week of summer in the Southern Hemisphere. The college championship will be decided on Dec. 7 at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. That same day, one continent and two seasons removed, the final match of the 2008 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup takes place in Chile. And while there are no guarantees that the United States makes it to the latter final, it's a lock that 21 of the best American college players (not to mention some international players who have NCAA ties) will spend much of November trying to get to that game instead of the one in N.C. Unlike two years ago, when the U-20 World Cup took Keelin Winters will miss time with Portland to play place in Russia at the onset of the college season in the for the U.S. U-20 national team. United States, the biggest tournament in international youth soccer in 2008 is on a direct collision course with the heart of the college postseason.
