StorIES by Simon Hill & Stephanie Brantz Rebuilding & Rivalry

In this week's Fox Football Fix lead commentators of the Hyundai A-League and Westfield W-League and off-field partners Simon Hill and Stephanie Brantz Have their say on the Wanderers two Elite teams

PART ONE: REBUILDING THE A-LEAGUE TEAM

uch is the modern day fascination with were glimpses of the more expansive approach Tony social media, many Hyundai A-League Popovic is looking to play this season. Popa calls clubs have adopted official “hashtags” as this the natural evolution of the playing style, and Scampaign slogans akin to political rallies. in keeping with modern trends in the game, it was Melbourne City has #together, while cross town something he knew he was probably going to have rivals Victory have plumped for #InEveryWay. to do sooner, rather than later. Sydney FC has #SydneyIsSkyBlue, Brisbane The new system will take time - but any team that #GoRoar, while Perth has #WestvsRest for season has the creative talents of Mitch Nichols and Dario eleven of the competition. Vidosic has to be taken seriously. Both players are Wanderers have opted for #PridePowerWest - now in the prime of their careers, and along with but I reckon #Rebuild would be equally apt. Romeo Castelen, there should be plenty of variation On the park, an astonishing 18 players departed in the final third to provide both chances, and goals. Pirtek Stadium during the off-season. Popa calls this the “ Natural Evolution of the playing style”

Piovaccari has a good CV - he has netted over 100 goals at senior level - and history shows that teams with proven goal scorers (think Archie Thompson, Joel Griffiths, Besart Berisha) tend to be there or thereabouts when the trophies are handed out. Off the park, the rebuild is also in process. Pirtek Stadium will eventually become a 35,000 all-seater venue - a timely boost for the club, given membership numbers have already blown out past 17,000. Meantime, the clubs training facility in Blacktown is about to be redeveloped, into a state of the art campus which should give Wanderers the edge over most Hyundai A-League clubs in that regard. Exciting times ahead then, for a club that experienced fantastic early success on the pitch. Now, the plans are in place to secure the long-term future, and build the Wanderers into a sporting super club - which is where they should be, along with the other big city outfits in the Hyundai A-League. Before all that comes today’s game with Perth Glory, and a chance for Wanderers fans to show their appreciation for ex-Wanderers, Ante Covic, Antony Golec and Jerrad Tyson. Covic in particular played a big part in the early success of the club and I’m sure the RBB will give him a fantastic ovation. Ante loved playing for the Wanderers but football is a brutal business and Popa clearly felt it was time to move onto the next phase. While past contributions will become part of the clubs folklore, it’s interesting to speculate just where Wanderers will be in ten years time and how big the club can become. Given the progress of the first few seasons it seems the sky is the limit, but as we’ve seen in the past with the demise of clubs such as Northern Spirit (who enjoyed a massive early growth spurt), the market is volatile, and (to quote an old saying), investments can go down, as well as up in value. That’s why it’s important to have a plan. Luckily, both Tony Popovic and his board, with Paul Lederer at the helm, appear to have a good one in place. #Rebuild is in full swing.
