From the Desk of Deacon Anthony May 13, 2018 Oneness in Christ Today marks the final Sunday in our seven-week celebration of Easter. Every year, the church sets aside 50 days to remember and reflect upon the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. For those who are “in Christ,” Easter is the most significant day in our lives; more significant than birthdays, anniversaries, even graduation from school. But now, because of Easter, our whole life has real meaning ,and purpose, and hope, and life attached to it. For all who are “in Christ”, everything, from our worship together to our daily vocations in life, is a joyful participation in the “new creation” that Christ our Lord initiated when He rose from the dead. It is possible to wander away and become separated from Jesus and His Easter victory. Jesus once told His disciples, “unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” We must trust as a child would. How much wisdom is there in this scripture verse? We indeed, have a busy weekend. The last group of our children, our 1st Communicants, received their First Holy Communion. They have now joined us “in Christ” and are one “in Christ.” Christ tells us that we are to be the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world” (Matthew 5:13-14). And so, we are. We have got to be in the world in order to “salt” it and “light” it. The Baptized are in the world, in society, in the workforce, in the schools, in the community, in the college dorms, in the classrooms, in friendships, in the family - in the world. What would this world be if the Baptized in Christ were not in it? Today we celebrate Mother’s Day. In this day of “Super Moms,” who cater to the entire family’s wants and needs, including chauffeuring everyone to all kinds of activities, doesn’t it amaze you how much gets done? And with such gentleness - another word for Love! During May, we honor another Mother: Our Blessed Mother Mary. And so today, we ask Mary our Mother, in this her special month, to continue to guide and bless all those who mother, both living and those who have gone before us. Recall the beautiful words of St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians, which is so popular for weddings: Love is patient, love is kind … it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. (1 Corinthians 13:4-6) We can interpret this in the context of motherhood: Mothers are patient; Mothers are kind; Mothers do not rejoice in what is wrong but rejoice in the truth. There is no limit to a Mother’s forbearance, to her trust, to her hope, to her power to endure. A mother’s love never fails. Loving one another, as Jesus loves us, never fails.
