The Wrap Report By Nancy Billups

“Meet The Rescuer” Dianna Johnson, San Antonio, TX

How long have you been with WRAP? I think I started helping with Whippet rescue at least 6+ years ago, probably longer . Before Whippets, I rescued my first breed, Great Danes .

Why do you do rescue? There is a big need in Texas for foster homes and transport help . It was just something that I felt I could do to help out the Whippet community . I know if it were one of my dogs in trouble, I would want someone out there to pull the dog from a shelter or some other situation . People’s lives can change in an instant and they do not always call the breeder for help . I am happy to help any Whippet in need . Dndianna a her agility Whippet, Satine.

What is the hardest part of rescue? That’s an easy question, taking in the 14-year-old dog Donations who has never lived with anyone else . You know no one Naoe Straitz – In Memory of Andrea O’Connor – $50 will adopt the dog and the dog will most likely die in your Jeannie Besier – In Memory of Dee Evans – $15 care . It’s very sad! The only thing you can do is to try Keryn and Pat Cureton – In Memory of Claudia Evans – $25 and make the last days as happy as possible and give Fran Hochberg, Ember and Forest – In Memory of Ch . Cottonwood lots of TLC . Sugar Sugar – $50 Christi Shewman – In memory of Summer Greenberg (2002 – 2013) Is it hard to give up the dogs in your care when they beloved Whippet of Christi Shewman and the late Brigette are adopted? Greenberg – $100 Sometimes it is . The ones that are hard for me are the David and Judy Losleben – $100 Allie Smith, Radish and Pixie Bug – $20 ones that have had some health problems like being Sue Butler – $300 heartworm positive . One dog that always pulls at my Christine and Daniel Chalk – $50 heart was Abby . Abby was very well bred and even had Elizabeth Keen – $200 some breed points and was left to starve to death . When Marrianne Lu – Nestle Community Care Campaign donation – $180 I got her, she was near death and after taking her to the Susan Nimphius – Hewlett-Packard Employee Match donation – $80 vet, we learned she was also heartworm positive . I fell Adoptions in love with her . After all she had been through she held Jean Gay of CA adopted Winston her head high and her temperament was lovely . As luck Susan Weidner of UT adopted Zero would have it, I found the perfect home for her . As she Donna Geschwender of IN adopted Angelique was led away by her new Mommy, Abby looked back Katherine Stiney of MI adopted Oxford at me and I will never forget how guilty I felt and how I Diane Rihner of TX adopted Ivy Mandy Daniel of KY adopted Luke wanted to just go grab her up and hug her . Abby died 7 Irene Downs of NY adopted Wallace and Winston months later of an aggressive cancer . It broke my heart . Rosemary Smith of MI adopted Baggins now Joey

What do you do for fun? Donations may be sent to: I compete in Agility Trials . Agility is my passion and my Whippet Rescue and Placement, Inc . dogs and I both love the sport . I will do agility until my c/o Jean Schroeder, Treasurer body no longer allows it! 17502 S . 750 W, Wanatah, IN 46390 www Wh. ippet-rescue .com The WRAP Reporter Nancy Billups WRAP is a 501(c)3 registered non-profit . His lengthy service began in 2006 when he passed his Delta Therapy Director at the National Pet Partners and R .E .A .D . certification . Jazz has also earned the AKC Institutes of Health, for choosing “Therapy Dog” title . The year 2007 was the start of what appeared to be his real calling . He started working at the Navarre Library, doing a R .E .A .D . activity once a month . By this time, he was up to at least six visits per month of his own, besides standing in for other dogs in our group whenever he was needed . He was a very busy guy .

Sadly, in 2008 my mother’s lung cancer had reached an advanced stage . When I went to stay with her for an indeterminate amount of time to provide her hospice care, I couldn’t imagine NOT bringing Jazz with me . Now I needed him . My mother was never a dog person, and had great reservations about having him stay in her immaculate home . But by the second day, her comment was “He really is an exceptional dog, isn’t he?” I can’t begin to describe what a comfort he was to both of us in that very difficult time .

When we moved to a beautiful, rural area of Alabama, we found that unlike Pensacola, FL, no one had heard of “therapy dogs ”. I looked at Jazz, he looked at me, and we decided we needed to do something about that . We contacted the county ALF Activities Director, and explained what a sweet dog could provide to the residents who were missing their beloved pets . By the end of that month, we had Anyway, like I said before, please don’t tell Jazz . But he is, indeed, started making biweekly visits . Everyone thought he was great, but “an exceptional dog ”. This is at any level ”. it is worth considering the sort of teamwork and organization that Six months before the show, Sue sent out a missive to all her chairs goes into not only a successful National bid, but also the execution outlining the ground rules for communication and updating her of the event itself . The 2013 Regional coordinator, Sue Carbajal, regarding both benchmarks of expected progress and informing her began planning this National three years before anyone loaded their of any snags or problems promptly . New this year was a National crates and luggage onto the luggage carts at the Valley River Inn in Financial Officer, a role filled by new AWC President, Red Tatro . So, a successful National depends on the location, having a strong leader as local chair, and the team of volunteers on the committee . “Being a show chairman is not unlike being a stud dog,” Sue says . The National must be in an area where lure coursing can be held in “If things go well you get all the credit and if they don’t, you the month of April, and a ballroom suitable for holding conformation get all the blame, but in fact, it’s really having the right people and obedience . Other areas may have National Show Chair Cindy Scott said, “2013 had one of the best suitable venues, but lack the people who want to tackle the sort of orchestrated teams I’ve ever worked with . It’s a daunting challenge, and I think all of us who came of time, which can be quite rare ”. to Eugene would agree that the 2013 Committee did a wonderful job of meeting that challenge . Sue realized that many factors affect the overall entry size of a National, most of which are well beyond the capacity of the local chair to address, Teamwork was also a factor behind many of the winning dogs .   AWC National Specialty Performance report 2013 Trial Report for the 2013 American Whippet Club National Lure Trial Junction City, Oregon

Another AWC National Lure Trial is in the books. With overcast skies and temperatures in the high 50’s, the usu- ally unpredictable Oregon weather stayed calm for the whole day. After having to adjust the course for a myste- rious pond that appeared overnight, the irst course went off at 8:30 am and the inal BOB trio ran at 2:45 pm.

I have to thank particularly Sue Pisias for being my right hand woman and keeping me on track and making sure I didn’t forget anything, Ann Chamberlain for taking the entries, designing the catalog and Spirit Banner and be- ing point on the clerking for the day of the trial, and Nick Pisias for designing the premium, making sure the equipment was in order and in place, and handling all the problems that go along with setting up the course and equipment. Special thanks go to David and Laura Hagey for allowing us to use their beautiful farm for the trial, and David for keeping the ield maintained for the last 6 months. Lisa Costello and Cindy Scott were invaluable with their advice and help through the entire process of planning and execution of the trial.

Without all of the trial workers an event like this could never happen. Thanks to Nick and Sue Pisias, Keith Ste- vens, and John Bell who came on Saturday to help setup. Thanks to Ann Chamberlain, Charles Roberts, and Beth Levine for keeping the records running as fast and as smoothly as the Lure and to the following people who all put in time helping man the various positions during the trial and making sure everything ran smoothly: Carol West, Cindy Scott, Leanne Harrington, Sue Pisias, Mary Hermon, Heather Badgett, Lauren Fuller, Keith Stevens, Mike Barrett Karen Hiliker, Lorain Abel, Debbie Peterson, Diane Kroll, David and Laura Hagey, Lisa Costello, and Mel Lueck. If I have forgotten anyone, I do apologize, but my brain is a little fried at this point.

AWC Obedience Results

Following Rally we began traditional obedience on Monday afternoon with the Novice and Beginner Novice classes. I have yet to identify what it is Whippets sense when they are all together to do obedience but somehow there is a com- mon thread….to make your owner/handler look like you have never been trained and anything coming out of the han- dlers mouth is a totally foreign language. This year was no different, of course, which always makes for interesting and pleasurable viewing to the audience. I can tell you from experience it is quite painful for the handler and I believe de- lightful for the naughty Whippet:-).

On Tuesday morning the balance of Utility, Open and the Optional classes were held and those in attendance were for- tunate to witness a very special performance that will go down in the history books as one of the greatest accomplish- ments in obedience at an AWC national specialty. To understand just how special it was, you have to go back a few years…...7 to be exact. That is how long Rachel Amado and Flair (Maverick Cowgirl Chic) had been working for this exact day. Flair was Rachel’s irst venture into Obedience with a Whippet and she made the most of it, earning multiple High in Trial awards (one at an AWC Specialty) and very high scores while working her way persistently through Nov- ice and Open, the irst two levels of Obedience. With each level the exercises become much more dificult to train for the handler and execute for the dog….especially a Whippet. It is hard to keep them motivated and happy as the dificul- ty increases and Flair was no exception. I knew Rachel had been showing her in Utility for a while and had earned 2 of the 3 legs for her Utility Dog title, but I had no idea the obstacles she had encountered along the way. I ran into Rachel in the parking lot on Saturday afternoon before the national began and she told me of the number of trials she had en- tered with Flair and how she would have a stellar performance, only to fail one small part of an exercise each time. She was worn out and had made the decision that if Flair did not inish at this trial, she was going to retire her.

There was a buzz in the ballroom on Tuesday morning when Rachel and Flair went into the ring. ExercisQUALIFIED e by exercise they worked their way through the class, making few mistakes. When the last jump was cleared and she inished the directed jumping, we all knew it was over. Flair had !!! She had earned her Utility title at last. But that was not all! Not only did she qualify, inish her title and nearly give Rachel a heart attack, she had earned a 193 (out of 200 points) which earned her the High in Trial award as well. The crowd went up in an uproar and we all stood in line to hug Rachel and Flair. She is now happily retired from Obedience and her registered name is Maverick Cowgirl Chic, UD!!!

This year we chose to score uti- lizing a ranking system which helps weight the more dificult classes in Obedience and gives the dogs a more consistent point spread throughout each event. 2013 had a very well rounded dog at the top, who is an excellent representative of a multi-purpose whippet. “Draco”, DC, GCh Amberwind Hamyra Dragon’s Claw, FCh, SC, had the top score in lure coursing, the 2nd highest score in Obedience and won the Performance Conformation event for a solid irst place inish in this event.
