CARSON B.A. University of Central Florida, 2005 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts in the Department of English in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Fall Term 2007 ABSTRACT The literary essays in this collection explore the relationships between mind, body, and environment as the narrator explores Orlando, her beachfront hometown of Sarasota, and other “tourist traps.” The vignettes and traditional and experimental essays here question how residents make popular vacation destinations their own, how newcomers establish themselves as part of local culture, and how much trust one can put in strangers and neighbors, from theme- park designers to lovers. Dance floors, hybrid bikes, flying elephants, swing sets, and swimming pools fill these pages. Worries spiral like disco lights on dance floors, and cultural forces press down with the regularity of pedal strokes. With the embodiment of place comes connection between environment and activity; music, buildings, landscape, and physical activity heighten the relationship between personal identity and place. Everything moves, but the appeal of tourist traps remains constant. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS For the support and encouragement I’ve received throughout this process, I thank my committee, my family, and my friends. I owe many thanks to Jocelyn Bartkevicius, who saw me through several nonfiction workshops and read one essay through more incarnations than I can count, always pushing me to condense language and strike the most painful chords I could manage. She led me to explore the grotesque, uncomfortable, and embarrassing, from the dolls I used to play with to my childhood fantasies. She challenged me to reveal the truth behind memory through excavating the artifacts of conversation and objects, even if I wasn’t sure what that truth was or if I really wanted to see it. Thanks goes to Terry Thaxton, who watched my hand shake across the page while I wrote my first imitation of a poem I didn’t understand. To Terry, for acknowledging that between line breaks and end-stopped punctuation and alliteration a poem also contains emotion. For telling me that I don’t need all those extra words. For one, I took the central image of the opening essay: a puzzle I played with as a child, made of large, cardboard triangles that fit together to depict a park scene. The seams between puzzle pieces connected diagonally-cut bodies and finished the trajectories of airborne footballs. I used this as a model a few months ago when I had trouble processing exactly what the three major things I was writing about—independent-label music, exercise, physical environments—had to do with each other. Sure, each essay could depict a particular scene, connected to the scenes on either side of it through a similar image or theme, but how could I also pull in what was happening with these three, very different entities? I had three themes. A triangle has three points. I combed back through my essays, and then I saw it. Each involved the body, an environment, and background noise. I made lists of how each of these themes was represented in each essay. This list led me

We didn't get bored during the 11 hours we had to wait in Los Angeles for our connection flight. As US airports don't have transit areas, we could walk freely around the big building and even leave it. When making inquiries about flights to Micronesia at the desk of Continental Airways, we got to talk to a very nice lady. She had been there herself and she spontaneously called in some other staff that came from Guam and Samoa. We stood there, talking for more than an hour and later had some light snacks as we had had before. On the 14 hours non-stop flight to Syndey, United Airlines crossed the dateline and so we lost one precious holiday..

Although the Rhodians would immediately be contacted by their friend Ptolemy III Eurgetes of Egypt with an offer to pay everything it would require to restore this bronze image of Helios the sun god, when the Rhodians consulted an oracle, the oracle forbade any such re-erection. They therefore declined their friend’s kind offer and, for almost the next millennium, the statue would be lying in ruins. Tourists would still be able to visit the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, despite the fact that this particular wonder lay in ruins. According to Pliny the Elder, few of these tourists could “make their arms meet round the thumb.” 1.     Physical Development In Girls: What To Expect Breast Development (Thelarche) The first visible evidence of puberty in girls is a nickel-sized lump under one or both nipples. Breast buds, as these are called, typically occur around age nine or ten, although they may occur much earlier, or somewhat later. In a study of seventeen thousand girls, it was concluded that girls do not need to be evaluated for precocious puberty unless they are Caucasian girls showing breast development before age seven or African American girls with breast development before age six. It is not known why, but in the United States, African American girls generally enter puberty a year before Caucasian girls; they also have nearly a year’s head start when it comes to menstruation. No similar pattern has been found among boys. Regardless of a girl’s age, her parents are often unprepared for the emergence of breast buds, and may be particularly concerned because at the onset of puberty, one breast often appears before the other. According to Dr. Suzanne Boulter, a pediatrician and adolescent-medicine specialist in Concord, New Hampshire, “many mistake them for a cyst, a tumor or an abscess.” The girl herself may worry that something is wrong, especially since the knob of tissue can feel tender and sore, and make it uncomfortable for her to sleep on her stomach. Parents should stress that these unfamiliar sensations are normal. What appear to be burgeoning breasts in heavyset prepubescent girls are often nothing more than deposits of fatty tissue. True breast buds are firm to the touch.

Murray 2011 ABSTRACT This thesis explores the universal journey of self discovery against the specific backdrop of the south coast of England where the narrator, an American woman in her early twenties, lives and works as a barmaid with her female travel companion. Aside from outlining the journey from outsider to insider within a particular cultural context, the thesis seeks to understand the implications of a defining friendship that ultimately fails, the ways a young life is shaped through travel and loss, and the sacrifices a person makes when choosing a place to call home. The thesis follows the narrator from her initial departure for England at the age of twenty-two through to her final return to Ohio at the age of twenty-seven, during which time the friendship with the travel companion is dissolved and the narrator becomes a wife and a mother.

I woke up when my forehead thudded against the window. Embarrassing, definitely, but as soon as I opened my eyes, I was too excited to be humiliated. Outside, rows of green crops flickered as we drove past — a boring view to some, but it made me want to bounce in my seat. It meant we were one-third of the way to Disneyland. “Are you okay back there, Casey?” My mom twisted around to see if I’d managed to smash my skull open while buckled into the backseat of a sedan. “I heard a clunk.” “Don’t worry, she’s got a hard head,” my dad said, clearly amusing himself. He said that every time my mom overreacted to a minor injury. “Maybe you ought to wear a helmet on the next trip, Acacia.” He glanced at me in the rearview mirror, and I pretended I was fixing my ponytail instead of rubbing my forehead.
