Annotation "'Stephen Fry is one of the great originals… This autobiography of his first twenty years is a pleasure to read, mixing outrageous acts with sensible opinions in bewildering confusion… That so much outward charm, self-awareness and intellect should exist alongside behaviour that threatened to ruin the lives of innocent victims, noble parents and Fry himself, gives the book a tragic grandeur and lifts it to classic status.' Financial Times; 'A remarkable, perhaps even unique, exercise in autobiography… that aroma of authenticity that is the point of all great autobiographies; of which this, I rather think, is one' Evening Standard; 'He writes superbly about his family, about his homosexuality, about the agonies of childhood… some of his bursts of simile take the breath away… his most satisfying and appealing book so far' Observer" Stephen Fry MOAB IS MY WASHPOT For You The Book of D., Verse 10, Chapter 11 To live is to war with trolls in heart and soul. • The British and Their Military
‘NOTHING CAN EXCUSE US IF WE FAIL’ The British and their Dead Servicemen, North-West Europe, 1944-1951 Submitted by Jennie Gray to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History In March 2016 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. Signature: ……………………………………… Page 1 Page 2 ABSTRACT Shortly after landing in France on D-Day, 6 June 1944, the British began a programme of care for the military dead of North-West Europe which would last for some seven years. The dead included not only the fatal casualties of the 1944-45 campaigns to liberate the occupied countries and conquer Germany, but also those who had died during the defeats in Norway and France in 1940. In addition, there the many thousands of missing RAF airmen who had been lost throughout the six years of the war. The Royal Navy, for obvious reasons, had few land-based dead, and thus it was the Army and the RAF who carried out the complex programme, ranging over vast areas of Europe and into Soviet territory as the Cold War began. The Army had the central role in registrations, exhumations, and the creation of the new military cemeteries, whilst the RAF’s focus was almost entirely upon the search for its missing airmen.

Reflective Essay Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award Natalie McDonald, Pomona College ‘19 The story of my senior thesis begins less with a moment of inspiration than with one of idle curiosity. Were there, I wondered 15 months ago, women’s military services in the British colonies during the Second World War as there were in the U.K.? A few quick Google searches led me to an online version of “We Were There,” a 2000 Ministry of Defence photographic exhi- bition chronicling the involvement of non-white British subjects in the armed forces from the sev- enteenth century through to the modern day.1 The section of the exhibit devoted to the Second World War included a brief segment on “Women in War” featuring photographs of the Women’s Auxiliary Corps (India) as well as Middle Eastern members of the Auxiliary Territorial Service.

  • Correspondence and Papers of Maurice Charles Collier Ward
2017 Daniel Reed for The Burgon Society THE BURGON SOCIETY CORRESPONDENCE AND PAPERS OF MAURICE CHARLES COLLIER WARD Historical Background This collection was formed by Maurice Charles Collier Ward (1926- 2011). Ward worked for several decades in the outfitters’ trade in Cambridge, finally serving as Academic Robe Manager for Ede and Ravenscroft Ltd. in the City. Custodial History These papers were donated to the Society by Ward’s family in March 2017. Mixed loose material was originally stored in two file folders, and a box file. This material was dispersed and arranged into the respective sequences at WARD/1-5. The original order of items in the reference files at WARD/2/1/2 has been retained. Stray material relating to other Cambridge outfitters’ companies was grouped together at WARD/2/2. A series of outfitters’ brochures and price-lists (etc.) were arranged alphabetically at WARD/4/2. Description This collection comprises correspondence, working documents, publications and other materials relating to Maurice Ward’s employment in the outfitters’ trade in Cambridge. They also reflect Ward’s personal interests in ceremonial dress. The correspondence and papers at WARD/1 date from 1969 to 1995, and cover Ward’s professional employment in the outfitters’ trade. WARD/2/1 includes working documents from Ward’s time at Ede and Ravenscroft. Reference files at WARD/2/1/2 chiefly refer to the academic gown trade with the University of Cambridge. WARD/2/2 comprises correspondence and papers pre-dating Ward’s own lifetime, including material generated by A. G. Almond & Co. Ltd. and Thomas Pratt & Son Ltd of Cambridge.
