Correspondence and Papers of Maurice Charles Collier Ward 2017 Daniel Reed for The Burgon Society THE BURGON SOCIETY CORRESPONDENCE AND PAPERS OF MAURICE CHARLES COLLIER WARD Historical Background This collection was formed by Maurice Charles Collier Ward (1926- 2011). Ward worked for several decades in the outfitters’ trade in Cambridge, finally serving as Academic Robe Manager for Ede and Ravenscroft Ltd. in the City. Custodial History These papers were donated to the Society by Ward’s family in March 2017. Mixed loose material was originally stored in two file folders, and a box file. This material was dispersed and arranged into the respective sequences at WARD/1-5. The original order of items in the reference files at WARD/2/1/2 has been retained. Stray material relating to other Cambridge outfitters’ companies was grouped together at WARD/2/2. A series of outfitters’ brochures and price-lists (etc.) were arranged alphabetically at WARD/4/2. Description This collection comprises correspondence, working documents, publications and other materials relating to Maurice Ward’s employment in the outfitters’ trade in Cambridge. They also reflect Ward’s personal interests in ceremonial dress. The correspondence and papers at WARD/1 date from 1969 to 1995, and cover Ward’s professional employment in the outfitters’ trade. WARD/2/1 includes working documents from Ward’s time at Ede and Ravenscroft. Reference files at WARD/2/1/2 chiefly refer to the academic gown trade with the University of Cambridge. WARD/2/2 comprises correspondence and papers pre-dating Ward’s own lifetime, including material generated by A. G. Almond & Co. Ltd. and Thomas Pratt & Son Ltd of Cambridge. WARD/3 includes albums of 19 th and 20 th century garment labels collected by Ward. Other publications and news-cuttings, photographs and prints (etc.) are found at WARD/4 and WARD/5. PARISH MAGAZINE MARCH 2 0 2 0 50p What the Ipswich Road roundabout can teach us about Lent For those who need to travel regularly around the Ipswich Road rounda- bout, the (I’m assured) impending completion of the roadworks must be a cause for celebration. When there are distractions, obstacles, and frus- trations making our daily lives more difficult, it’s easy (and quite natural) to become obsessed, dejected, angry - or all three! At the heart of Lent is the idea that – unlike the Ipswich Road roadworks – we have it within ourselves to remove some of the distractions, obsta- cles and frustrations in our lives that get between us and God’s love for us. Actually, that’s not quite right: we don’t do this ourselves – through our own power alone – but by asking for God’s assistance. And making that prayer for God’s help is itself part of the solution. We follow in a very long tradition of people asking God for assistance! “Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me!” “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” Instead of trying to remove those things which distract us from, or ob- struct, God’s love by obsessing about them and allowing them to loom ever larger, we should bring them to God and accept his help. When we do this, we turn our face to God, we reach out to God: we repent! So maybe the real danger each Lent isn’t the obstructions and distrac- tions in themselves, but thinking we can deal with them without God, rather than reaching out for God? When we reach out, we avoid the temptation to treat self-denial as if it is some ‘holy’ act of self-harm (which God never wants for us).

The majority of working age people are in employment with a large proportion being professional people working in industry, commerce, institutions or government. There are, however, poorer parts of our parish to which we have discerned a particular call to serve as well and we envisage this area of ministry to be included in the Pioneer Minister’s remit.

However, we have also been amazed at the extraordinary and creative ways in which you have continued to live and tell the story of God’s love for the world as seen in Jesus. The words of Paul to the church in Philippi seem very relevant… ‘I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of your, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus’ So, thank you for all you are and give. And thank you too for the messages of love and care to us. We value the knowledge that we are prayed for. You will know that the Government announced last weekend that it hopes that churches may open for individual private prayer from next Monday 15 June. You may have wondered why we didn’t write earlier about this. Although the Church of England has been part of the discussions about the phased re-opening of churches, the group involved were only informed of the changed announcement in the hour before it was made.
