The Hymns of John Fahey Today I’d like to introduce the music of John Fahey, an American fingerstyle guitarist, to you. John Fahey was a genius, one of the greatest steel-string acoustic guitarists and composers for the guitar ever, a musical innovator who inspired and inspires many other guitarists, and recorded many hymns and other kinds of religious music. In 2003, he was ranked 35th in the Rolling Stone "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" list. He was born in 1939 in Maryland, brought up in the Episcopal church, and at a very young age became interested in folk and blues music. Fahey discovered his love of early blues upon hearing Blind Willie Johnson's "Praise God I'm Satisfied" on a record-collecting trip to Baltimore with his friend and mentor, the musicologist Richard K. Spottswood. Much later, Fahey compared the experience to a religious conversion and remained a devout blues disciple until his death. Fahey collected records and founded his own label, Takoma Records, on which he released both his own albums and blues and guitar albums by other musicians. After graduating from American University, a Methodist university in Washington, D.C., with a degree in philosophy and religion, Fahey moved to California in 1963 to study philosophy at the University of California at Berkeley . The following year, Fahey moved south to Los Angeles to join the folklore master's program at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) at the invitation of department head D.K. Wilgus. Fahey's UCLA master's thesis on the music of the blues musician Charley Patton was later published. -

Excerpts from Glenn Jones' notes for the reissue: On Blind Joe Death 1 Of the record itself, one side was credited to John Fahey, the other to an obscure bluesman that Fahey had "discovered" named Blind Joe Death-or at least that was the album's intended conceit. In spite of the bluesman's rather unlikely name, and the fact that the guitarists on both sides of the record sounded remarkably similar, at least one well-know folk scholar was taken in by the hoax. This was the first of many subterfuges perpetrated by Fahey, whose future liner notes (and those of aide de camp, Ed Denson), would be full of lies, in-jokes, obscure references, and absurdities, often written in a tone that mocked the texts of prominent blues scholars and folklorists of the day. Considering the fact that Fahey was then as well-known as his invented blues counterpart, one wonders how many people outside Fahey's immediate circle of friends "got" the joke (or cared), or why he bothered to perpetrate such a deception in the first place. Though the deeper answers to that question must lie in the recesses of Fahey's noggin, the fact is that John has always done exactly what he wants and has sought to amuse himself first and foremost. On the first reissue: BJD II Rather than simply repressing the original "gas station" edition of the album, Fahey felt his playing had improved enough to warrant recording anew several tracks he was no longer satisfied with, which he did in April of 1964. -

Will Ackerman Universally recognized as the preeminent pioneer in the new age music movement, and the founder of Windham Hill Records, Will Ackerman's career spans more than three decades of remarkable vision, single-minded determination, fervent business savvy, and "a thorough love of the mystery of making music." The glory years at Windham Hill with Ackerman at the helm launched the recording careers of an abundant list of acoustic instrumentalists, many of whom became household names. The primary influence Windham Hill cast on contemporary music over the last three decades of the 20th century emanated from folk roots, the acoustic guitar, and the piano. This legacy remains with Ackerman in a uniquely prolific and peerless career. From a distance, Will's life is anything but ordinary. Yet upon closer examination, the strongest, most colorful threads in the fabric of who he is are traditionally held values and pursuits almost anyone would consider commonplace. The reality is Ackerman's success is predicated on doing traditional things untraditionally well. Will lives on a large spread of land in Windham County, Vermont outside Brattleboro. There, on sprawling acreage among well-tended, expansive gardens sits a coterie of New England-style buildings collectively called The Compound. Amid the primary residence, the barn, the bakery, Screen House, The James, The Dream Garage, the potting shed and The Tower, stands Imaginary Road Studios, a three-story structure and state-of-the-art recording facility. In 1972 he founded Windham Hill Builders, the sister company that chronologically parallels Windham Hill Records. Of his 40-year career as a builder Will says, "The vision of completely constructed buildings is so tangible to me, formal plans aren't really necessary." His vision for Imaginary Road Studios was designed around the breathtaking scenery of the West River Valley in full view from the studio's core creating a naturally serene chamber for recording sessions. -
