Univerzita Karlova, Fakulta sociálních věd, Institut Politologie. Katedra Politologie. Vedoucí bakalářské práce doc. PhDr. Michel Perottino, PhD.

  • Sinn Fein in Government Sean Mcveigh
Sinn Fein in Government Sean McVeigh On 30 November 2011 when tens of thousands of workers went on strike in the North over attacks on pensions and austerity cutbacks in the public sector, the Sinn Fein deputy first minister Martin McGuinness said he supported the strike.McGuinness said: "I understand fully the feelings of public sector workers angry at the imposition of a pension levy by the British government. I support the striking workers in the actions they have taken76." In addition SF issued various statements saying its "elected representatives and activists were out on the picket lines" and Sinn Fein wanted, "a change in the cuts policy being imposed by the British government77." The message Sinn Fein was sending out was that the public sector cuts being imposed in the North have nothing to do with the policies it pursues in the Executive. McGuinness was careful to frame the industrial action as being against a "pension levy by the British government", but the reality is that many thousands of strikers will have understood their action to be against both the government in Westminster and the Executive at Stormont. While McGuinness may attempt to distance himself from the cuts, the Executive - led by SF and the DUP - is implementing a programme of austerity which is deeply damaging to public services and working class communities. One recent example of this type of policy came when SF and other parties in the Assembly brought in a new workfare scheme for the unemployed. It provides free labour for employers and punishment - loss of benefit - for the unemployed who refuse to comply.

The revelations focus on the activities of the shadowy army intelligence outfit, the Force Research Unit (FRU), whose activities are at the heart of the third Stevens inquiry into allegations of collusion. On 22 September The Sunday People failed in the High Court to overturn a government gagging order preventing the paper from publishing further details concerning allegations that high-ranking intelligence officers were among those under investigation for "orchestrating dozens of loyalist killings". The paper had previously revealed collusion between the FRU and loyalists in the murder of Francisco Notorantonio, a pensioner and father of 11, who was shot dead by the Ulster Freedom fighters in 1987. Sinn Fein, allowances and access to Commons facilities Standard Note: SN/PC/1667 Last updated: 8 March 2006 Author: Oonagh Gay Parliament and Constitution Centre On 18 December 2001 the House debated and agreed a motion to allow Members who had chosen not to take their seats to use facilities within the precincts of the House and use the departments of the House, and claim Members’ Allowances. The motion did not provide for access to Short money, the scheme of financial assistance to opposition parties at Westminster. However SF Members in the Assembly are entitled to financial assistance as a party, in a statutory scheme analogous to Short money. Similarly the motion did not affect the exclusion of parties with two or more Members of Parliament, but whose Members have not taken the oath, from receiving Policy Development Grants, under the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000. For further information on Short money and Political Development Grants see Library Standard Notes no 1663 Short Money and 3138 Funding of Political Parties. The full text of the Parliamentary Oath is given in Appendix 1 of Library Research Paper 01/116 The Parliamentary Oath. Sinn Féin took moved into their offices on 21 January 2002. Reports of the Independent Monitoring Commission in Northern Ireland recommended sanctions against Sinn Fein following events in April 2004. The Northern Ireland Secretary suspended allowances for SF members, as members of a political party, in the Northern Ireland Assembly, from April 2004, but these were restored from 1 November 2005. A motion from the Leader of the House to suspend allowances for Sinn Fein MPs at Westminster for one year from 1 April 2005 was debated and passed on 10 March 2005.
