Augusta, Georgia AUGUSTA, GEORGIA MASTERS TOURNAMENT TRAFFIC TMC PRESENTATION - 2020 WHAT IS THE MASTERS TOURNAMENT? The Masters Tournament is hosted by the Augusta National Golf Club (ANGC) every year during the first full week of April (Sunday to Sunday). • The tournament was first organized by Bob Jones and Clifford Roberts in 1934. • The invitational was officially named the Masters Tournament in 1939 • The first green jacket was awarded to tournament champion Sam Snead in 1949. • Jack Nicklaus has the most Masters wins with six. • Jack Nicklaus is the oldest Masters champion at 46 in 1986. • Tiger Woods is the youngest Masters champion at 21 in 1997. • The Masters Tournament is the only golf Major to be played at the same location and same time each year. STEPS TO PREPARE FOR THE MASTERS TOURNAMENT Preparation for the Masters Tournament can be divided into the following groups: 1. Pre-Tournament Preparation 2. Conducting Tournament Traffic 3. Post Tournament Review 4. Reinstall Everyday Traffic Control Devices MASTERS TOURNAMENT PRE-TOURNAMENT PREPARATION Preparation for the Masters Tournament begins in earnest late January. • Meeting is held with the ANGC, consultants, and various city departments. • Jacobs Engineering Group provides update on traffic control plan. • Changes from the previous year’s tournament are reviewed and discussed • The Augusta Engineering Department, Traffic Engineering starts preparation and installation of traffic control devices. MASTERS TOURNAMENT PRE-TOURNAMENT PREPARATION MASTERS TOURNAMENT PRE-TOURNAMENT PREPARATION MASTERS TOURNAMENT PRE-TOURNAMENT PREPARATION Many additional traffic control devices such as changeable message signs and directional signs are installed for the tournament. MASTERS TOURNAMENT CONDUCTING TOURNAMENT TRAFFIC The Traffic Management Center (TMC) is essential for managing the large volume of traffic that visits Augusta each spring. • Through the TMC, we can monitor over 40 PTZ cameras along the routes leading to and from Augusta National. • Each traffic signal along these routes, approximately 30 signals, can be monitored individually and timing for each can be adjusted in real time. • Notifications are pushed out to media outlets and social media as traffic conditions progress throughout the day. MASTERS TOURNAMENT CONDUCTING TOURNAMENT TRAFFIC The Traffic Management Center (TMC) is essential for managing the large volume of traffic that visits Augusta each spring. MASTERS TOURNAMENT POST TOURNAMENT REVIEW Approximately two months after the tournament is complete, the traffic committee meets one last time to discuss observations and improvements that could be made to next year’s event. MASTERS TOURNAMENT REINSTALL EVERYDAY TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES After the tournament is complete, it takes Traffic Engineering approximately two weeks to remove all of the Masters specific signs and return everything to normal operations. The 365-acre property, originally Fruitland Nurseries, was purchased in 1931 for $70,000. Jones helped design the golf course, working alongside the esteemed British architect Dr. Alister Mackenzie. Jones’s popularity within the game helped attract golf’s biggest stars to the Masters, beginning with the inaugural event in 1934.     2011Traditions of Golf Challenge Study Guide HISTORY SECTION PRE - 20th Century “When did the game of golf start?” Golf originated in the 15th century in Scotland. Mary, Queen of Scots introduced the word “caddie” to the game. While playing golf, she was accompanied by a club-carrying young boy whom she called the “cadet”, or “caddie.” Players would hit a pebble around a natural course of sand dunes, rabbit runs and tracks using a stick or primitive club. “How were golf balls developed?” The first real golf ball was known as the “feathery”. The feathery was a leather sack filled by hand with boiled goose feathers, and stitched up and painted. The feathery golf ball period may have started as early as the 1400’s and ended in the early 1850’s. The arrival of the gutta percha ball in 1848 or “guttie”, as it was called, revolutionized the game and allowed golf’s spread to the masses. The guttie was made from rubber, which could be heated, and formulated into a ball. The next revolution in ball design came around 1905 with the patented "Haskell" ball, which is a composite of a solid core wound with thin strips of rubber. Some modern balls (the expensive ones) are made this way today. This ball performed much better than the gutty and could be made cheaply compared to earlier balls. In 1972 the first two-piece ball was introduced by Spalding. These are more popular with amateurs, as they are more durable and considered to be longer and straighter. Many professionals are still devoted to the softer covered balls, since they prefer the added spin for control as opposed to distance.
