Baptism class is held the third Thursday of each month at 6:00pm. This can be done at least seven (7) months before the birth in order to make proper sacramental preparations. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE Diocesan policy requires a minimum of six (6) months of sacramental preparations for marriage. Engaged couples are invited to call the Pastor for an appointment. HOLY COMMUNION OR ANOINTING OF THE SICK Please call the Pastor if you or any family members are ill or plan to be hospitalized to arrange the reception of the Sacraments. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS - Catechumenate Those interested in becoming a Catholic or in completing their initiation are invited to contact Deacon Keith Hebert at the Church office to learn more about the Catechumenate Process. EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 2, 2020 OUR DEEPEST NEEDS READINGS FOR THE WEEK The word of God serves up a tremendous feast for us today. Isaiah beckons all who hunger and thirst to come to the Lord for August 3-9 satisfaction. The psalmist cries out, “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs” (Psalm 145:16). Saint Paul tells us that MONDAY Jer 28:1-17 nothing can separate us from the love of God. Finally, in the Gospel, we hear the story of the miraculous feeding of over five 3 Ps 119:29, 43, 79, 80, thousand people from a mere five loaves and two fish. Most of us 95, 102 have our material needs met on a day-to-day basis. These Mt 14:22-36 scriptures, nevertheless, have much to say to the contemporary believer. We must ask ourselves, “Where are my deepest hungers? TUESDAY Jer 30:1-2, 12-15, Where are my thirsts?” After material needs are satisfied and, in 18-22 some cases, over-satisfied, many people still experience a deep 4 longing for spiritual balance and well-being. As the loaves and fish Ps 102:16-21, 29, are multiplied in today’s Gospel, perhaps our prayer can be a 22-23 longing for the satisfaction of the deepest needs that only God can Mt 14:22-36 fill. Stories abound of reading hearts and exorcisms, 9 Ps 85:9-14 but Vianney’s first miracle was getting ordained. Difficulty with Rom 9:1-5 studies delayed him, prompting the rector’s apology to the bishop, Mt 14:22-33 “So far to ordain just one, especially this one!” The bishop, who could not know he was ordaining the future patron saint of parish priests, replied, “No burden to ordain one good priest!” In Ars, only an elderly handful attended Mass, “praying,” one told Vianney, “for a priest with brains.” But he stayed forty-two years, fulfilling the promise he made the day he arrived. In a sculpture just outside the village Vianney points skyward: “Show me the way to Ars,” he tells a boy, “and I’ll show you the way to heaven.” To someone who feared there was no heaven beyond the grave, Vianney smiled, “My child, it would have been heaven enough to have lived as Jesus’ disciple on earth.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.     Napoleon had withdrawn the exemption in some dioceses as he required more soldiers. Two days into his service, John fell ill and required hospitalization. As his troop continued, he stopped in at a church where he prayed.     NRVC chose to take a closer look at our future, challenges, and hopes... Dear Friend of NRVC, In preparation for the 2008 presidential election, Americans around the country examined their values and priorities, and compared them with those of our two presidential candidates, so that they would be well-informed about the country’s present challenges and their own hopes for the country’s future. In a similar fashion, last year NRVC chose to take a closer look at our future, our challenges and our hopes so that we can be well- informed about what lies ahead. Our first priority was to launch a major study on vocations to religious life, in collaboration with the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), which we did in the fall. When the results are finally released later this year, the “best practices” gleaned from this study will serve as a guide for religious insti- tutes to develop their future, vocation strategies. Complementing this project, the annual VISION survey from VocationMatch.com in- dicates a rise in the number of inquiries to religious life for the third year in a row—another hopeful sign for our future! Our Executive Board is also looking to secure the future of NRVC by identifying our major priorities for the coming three years as our previous strategic plan will be completed in 2010. The need, the energy, and the passion to promote new membership in religious life are there. I felt it in Louisville, KY, where approximately 450 vocation ministers processed through the downtown streets raising vocation awareness.
