Pastor’s Corner

My brothers and sisters,

The remembrance of the dead seemed to come a little early for me this year. September-end marked one year of my sister’s passing away. I must admit to you that I’ve been sitting with this loss for quite some time. And, it has not been easy!

In her wisdom, each November, the Church invites us to touch upon the significance of the remembrance of the dead. For some, calling to mind deceased family and friends can be very painful especially when the grief is relatively recent or it is an anniversary, the pain is deep. Death can be very raw, and what is raw needs to be healed. To do so, we are invited to embrace a broader and truly Catholic sense of remembrance.

As we gather on Saturday November 2nd during 5pm mass, we will remember, yes, looking back to the past at our loss but WELCOME also looking ahead to the future in trust and hope. Our faith Saint John Vianney is a community of faith, assures us that just as our loved one shared in Christ’s death hope and love. We strive to foster our spiritual growth through baptism, so too she or he will share in Christ’s and share the gifts God has given to us all. resurrection and enjoy eternal life in God’s presence. Spirituality of Prayer Eucharistic Adoration What is Eucharistic Adoration? For those who have not heard of Eucharistic Adoration, a few words of explanation are needed. Eucharistic Adoration is a time set aside for personal prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, apart from the Mass. Our primary worship of Jesus is at Mass where we receive the Eucharist, or Body and Blood of Christ, in communal celebration under the form of bread and wine. Through the words of consecration by the priest and the miracle of transubstantiation, Jesus Christ is truly present in the host. At designated times after the Mass, Eucharistic Adoration is held where people can come by to visit, adore and pray before the Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament (consecrated host) which is placed in a (display vessel) at church.

In the Adoration of Jesus Christ, present in the Eucharist, we give Him thanks, worship and honor through the time we spend in His Presence. One of the extraordinary benefits of Eucharistic Adoration is its invitation to find gratitude, humility and perspective in our busy lives, opening ourselves to the possibility of peace and serenity. It is a welcome refuge from a world that demands our every moment and all of our attention, and often robs us of our time and energy to connect with God through prayer and proper reflection. Regular participation in Eucharistic Adoration provides us the opportunity to slow down, breathe deeply, and focus for a moment on our “inner” life.

What do you actually do during Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament? The way you choose to pray before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament at Eucharistic Adoration is up to you. There are no requirements, just respect for the Presence of Christ in the silence of your heart. Some people take the opportunity to pray about challenging situations or to simply thank God for their blessings. You may want to spend your time reading the Bible, reciting your favorite prayers, contemplating acts of faith, hope, charity, thanksgiving, reparation or forgiveness, saying the rosary silently, or doing whatever type of prayerful devotion that brings you closer to Him. You can also sit and do nothing, just simply keeping Him company, as you would a dear friend. It is your time for private and personal prayer, one-on-one with Jesus!

Is Eucharistic Adoration new? No, it is a very old tradition of the Catholic Church. Although Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament had been in practice for centuries, the Council of Trent in the 16th century reaffirmed it saying, “The Blessed Sacrament is to be publicly exposed for the people’s Adoration.” Pope John Paul II reemphasized the importance of the practice often during his papacy saying, “The Eucharist, in the Mass and outside of the Mass, is the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, and is therefore deserving of the worship that is given to the living God, and to Him alone.” Eucharistic Adoration is a beautiful devotional practice that has endured through the ages.

When is Eucharistic Adoration held at St John Vianney church? You are invited to make a visit at any time during Eucharistic Adoration hours on Saturday mornings at St John Vianney church. Adoration begins after the 8:30 am Mass on all Saturdays with opening prayers, reflections, meditations and Benediction by the priest. On the First Saturdays of the month, Adoration is held until 12 Noon. On all the other Saturdays, Adoration ends at 9:30 am. PLEASE JOIN US!

If you would like to help in the Eucharistic Adoration Ministry, please call the parish office and ask for Debbie Mellin.
