I considered carry- ing this throughout the entire message but hesitated, not wishing to cause you to pull out your hair while reading my first address to you. I begin my experience as president at the end of a year, wrapping up 2009, ushering out spectacular board members, and preparing to welcome a new group of leaders who are holding their heads high and displaying their devotion to TWFF for all to see. The fall always seems like a retrospective time…assessing where we have been and what we’ve achieved, reflecting on the friends we have made and lost and the fish that we’ve caught and those that got away. And appropriately, we give thanks for all that we have forged during the past year. Not all of it good or rewarding, but all of it building us into fuller persons, taking us to another level of richness, adding another layer of fabric to our lives. If I were to stop and literally give thanks for everyone who means so much to me and everything that enriches my being, I would never complete this message. Just know, if we have talked, e-mailed, or fished together in a stream, you have touched me, and I carry a part of you with me on my life journey. A dear friend gifted me with the book, The Girls From Ames, which is a documentary about 11 women who grew up together in Ames, Iowa, and have carried on life-long friendships since they were toddlers until now in their mid-40’s. (I suppose I was given this book to help glean some insight into the mechanics of female relationships as I begin my term as president.) Certainly it is a book about women and their friendships. Over many marriages, a few divorces, lots of kids, and the death of one in the group, there is an unmistakable bonding that glues these women together. They always have each other’s back, and they fend off criticism from outsiders. They are not without their flaws and shortcomings, but they all recognize their own and each other’s faults and remain in enduring friendships. I tend to believe that women share this bonding ability when their hearts are in alignment. Who better knows the complexities of a woman better than another woman? I also look at TWFF and see this same bonding among our group. I see it on many different levels. I see it with our CFR participation, and with our outreach involvement. I see it when we meet at our Mullet Mixers, when we fish together, and when we share a drink and a story. We are like The Girls From Ames in that our family members; mar- riages; kids, probably numbering in the hundreds; and we, being of every age, are bonded by our passion of fishing and camaraderie. We share the same glue throughout our club. I think in our numerous friendships we recognize the diverse personalities that compose our group and hold all members dear no matter our differences. As we approach the end of 2009 and prepare to embark on another year of great outings and fishing, we should look at our club members and keep them close to our hearts. Upcoming I’m excited to start 2010 being a TWFF member and getting to serve on the board. I feel the “glue” of the group, and I look forward to ushering in the new board mem- TWFF Events bers and completing another year with existing members. My thanks extend to ev- DECEMBER 31, 2009 ery one of you that attend outings, work hard, and foster a supportive environment JANUARY 1-3, 2010 in which women can learn to fish. For the members that I haven’t had the chance to Guadalupe River meet, I am thankful that you are on our roster and you’re letting us be a part of your lives. We have some of the finest, most fabulous, fanatical, fishing femmes in the FEBRUARY 19-21 state of Texas. And we also have some of the most generous gifted men fishing in Beavers Bend, our midst too. I am happy and THANKFUL to serve TWFF in 2010! Their commitment to our club goals has allowed us to enjoy success, growth, and recognition in the fly fishing community. We certainly appreciate the gift of time and talent given by all. Thank you, Ladies It’s time, once again, for TWFF elections, and the nominating committee, composed of Rozlynn Orr, Sheila Anderson, and Vicki Andrews, is delighted to present the slate of officer and trustee candidates: First Vice President – Karla Grimwood Treasurer – Jan Bates One Trustee position - Leslie DeHay, Gretchen Neubauer As we looked for nominees to serve our growing club, we were pleased with just how much talent we have within our ranks. We are fortunate to have so many individuals willing to share the responsibility of guiding the club into the future and promoting fly fishing for women. The newly elected officers will assume their positions starting January 1, 2010. You should have already received your E-mail ballot. Voting will be held until December 16, 2009. To submit your vote, send it to [email protected]. Following is a short biographical statement and photo of each of the candidates. Karla Grimwood - First Vice President Karla grew up in south Florida fishing on Lake Okeechobee, but only learned to fly fish after she moved to Texas in 2006. She showed up at Oktoberfisch that year with a brand new fly rod and a determination to learn. Fortunately, there were several who were willing to teach her and long-lasting friendships were formed.
