Talmud Torah for Shabbat Chayei Sarah :Chapter 25 פרק כ"ה: .1 Abraham had taken another wife, whose name was 1 ַוֹיּ ֶסף ַא ְב ָר ָהם ַו ִיּ ַקּח ִא ָשּׁה וּ ְשׁ ָמהּ .Keturah ְקטוּ ָרה .ב ַו ֵתּ ֶלד לוֹ ֶאת ִז ְמ ָרן ְו ֶאת ,She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian 2 ָי ְק ָשׁן ְו ֶאת ְמ ָדן ְו ֶאת ִמ ְד ָין ְו ֶאת ִי ְשׁ ָבּק .Ishbak and Shuah ְו ֶאת שׁוּ ַח .ג ְו ָי ְק ָשׁן ָי ַלד ֶאת ְשׁ ָבא ְו ֶאת Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan; the 3 ְדּ ָדן וּ ְב ֵני ְד ָדן ָהיוּ ַאשּׁוּ ִרם וּ ְלטוּ ִשׁ ים descendants of Dedan were the Ashurites, the וּ ְל ֻא ִמּים .ד וּ ְב ֵני ִמ ְד ָין ֵעי ָפה ָו ֵע ֶפר ַו ֲח ֹנ .Letushites and the Leummites ַו ֲא ִבי ָדע ְו ֶא ְל ָדּ ָעה ָכּ ל ֵא ֶלּה ְבּ ֵני The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanok, Abida 4 ְקטוּ ָרה .ה ַו ִיּ ֵתּן ַא ְב ָר ָהם ֶאת ָכּל ֲא ֶשׁר .and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah לוֹ ְל ִי ְצ ָחק .ו ְו ִל ְב ֵני ַה ִפּי ַל ְג ִשׁים ֲא ֶשׁר .Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac 5 ְל ַא ְב ָר ָהם ָנ ַתן ַא ְב ָר ָהם ַמ ָתּ ֹנת ַו ְי ַשׁ ְלּ ֵחם But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the 6 ֵמ ַעל ִי ְצ ָחק ְבּנוֹ ְבּעוֹ ֶדנּוּ ַחי ֵק ְד ָמה ֶאל ֶא ֶרץ ֶק ֶדם ז ְו ֵא ֶלּה ְי ֵמי ְשׁ ֵני ַח ֵיּי . sons of his concubines and sent them away from his ַא ְב ָר ָהם ֲא ֶשׁר ָחי ְמ ַאת ָשׁ ָנה ְו ִשׁ ְב ִעים son Isaac to the land of the east. ָשׁ ָנה ְו ָח ֵמשׁ ָשׁ ִנים .ח ַו ִיּ ְג ַוע ַו ָיּ ָמת 7 Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years. ַא ְב ָר ָהם ְבּ ֵשׂי ָבה טוֹ ָבה ָז ֵקן ְו ָשׂ ֵב ַע 8 Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good ַו ֵיּ ָא ֶסף ֶאל ַע ָמּיו .ט ַו ִיּ ְק ְבּרוּ ֹאתוֹ ִי ְצ ָחק old age, an old man and full of years; and he was ְו ִי ְשׁ ָמ ֵעאל ָבּ ָניו ֶאל ְמ ָע ַרת ַה ַמּ ְכ ֵפּ ָלה gathered to his people. ֶאל ְשׂ ֵדה ֶע ְפ ֹרן ֶבּן ֹצ ַחר ַה ִח ִתּי ֲא ֶשׁר ַעל 9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of ְפּ ֵני ַמ ְמ ֵרא .י ַה ָשּׂ ֶדה ֲא ֶשׁר ָק ָנה Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of ַא ְב ָר ָהם ֵמ ֵאת ְבּ ֵני ֵחת ָשׁ ָמּה ֻק ַבּר Zohar the Hittite, ַא ְב ָר ָהם ְו ָשׂ ָרה ִא ְשׁתּוֹ .יא ַו ְי ִהי ַא ֲח ֵרי the field Abraham had bought from the 10 מוֹת ַא ְב ָר ָהם ַו ְי ָב ֶר ֱא ִהים ֶאת ִי ְצ ָחק Hittites. Yale University library 1 Rashi: Ketorah is Hagar רש"י: קטורה זו הגר .3 :Chapter 16 פרק טז: .4 .Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her ַויֹּא ֶמר ַא ְב ָרם ֶאל ָשׂ ַרי ִה ֵנּה ִשׁ ְפ ָח ֵת The angel of the Adonai found Hagar near a spring in 7 ְבּ ָי ֵד ֲע ִשׂי ָלהּ ַהטּוֹב ְבּ ֵעי ָנ ִי ַו ְתּ ַע ֶנּ ָה the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to ָשׂ ַרי ַו ִתּ ְב ַרח ִמ ָפּ ֶני ָה .ז ַו ִיּ ְמ ָצ ָאהּ ַמ ְל ַא .Shur ה' ַעל ֵעין ַה ַמּ ִים ַבּ ִמּ ְד ָבּר ַעל ָה ַע ִין And he said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you 8 ְבּ ֶד ֶר שׁוּר .ח ַויֹּא ַמר ָה ָגר ִשׁ ְפ ַחת ָשׂ ַרי come from, and where are you going?” “I’m running ֵאי ִמ ֶזּה ָבאת ְו ָא ָנה ֵת ֵל ִכי ַותֹּא ֶמר ִמ ְפּ ֵני .away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered ָשׂ ַרי ְגּ ִב ְר ִתּי ָא ֹנ ִכי ֹבּ ַר ַחת .ט ַויֹּא ֶמר ָלהּ Then the angel of the Adonai told her, “Go back to 9 ַמ ְל ַא ה' שׁוּ ִבי ֶאל ְגּ ִב ְר ֵתּ ְו ִה ְת ַע ִנּי ”.your mistress and submit to her ַתּ ַחת ָי ֶדי ָה .י ַויֹּא ֶמר ָלהּ ַמ ְל ַא ה' The angel added, “I will increase your descendants 10 ַה ְר ָבּה ַא ְר ֶבּה ֶאת ַז ְר ֵע ְולֹא ִי ָסּ ֵפר ”.so much that they will be too numerous to count ֵמ ֹרב .יא ַויֹּא ֶמר ָלהּ ַמ ְל ַא ה' ִה ָנּ The angel of the Adonai also said to her: “You are 11 ָה ָרה ְוֹי ַל ְד ְתּ ֵבּן ְו ָק ָראת ְשׁמוֹ ִי ְשׁ ָמ ֵעאל ִכּי ָשׁ ַמע ה' ֶאל ָע ְנ ֵי ְך יב ְוהוּא ִי ְה ֶיה . now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall ֶפּ ֶרא ָא ָדם ָידוֹ ַב ֹכּל ְו ַיד ֹכּל בּוֹ ְו ַעל ְפּ ֵני name him Ishmael, for Adonai has heard of your ָכל ֶא ָחיו ִי ְשׁ ֹכּן .יג ַו ִתּ ְק ָרא ֵשׁם ה' ַה ֹדּ ֵבר misery. ֵא ֶלי ָה ַא ָתּה ֵאל ֳר ִאי ִכּי ָא ְמ ָרה ֲה ַגם 12 He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be ֲהם ָר ִאי ִתי ַא ֲח ֵרי ֹר ִאי .יד ַעל ֵכּן ָק ָרא against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, ַל ְבּ ֵאר ְבּ ֵאר ַל ַחי ֹר ִאי ִה ֵנּה ֵבין ָק ֵדשׁ and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.” וּ ֵבין ָבּ ֶרד .טו ַו ֵתּ ֶלד ָה ָגר ְל ַא ְב ָרם ֵבּן 13 She gave this name to the Adonai who spoke to her: ַו ִיּ ְק ָרא ַא ְב ָרם ֶשׁם ְבּנוֹ ֲא ֶשׁר ָי ְל ָדה ָה ָגר “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have ִי ְשׁ ָמ ֵעאל. now seen the One who sees me.” 14 That is why the well was called Beer Lechai Roi ; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered. 15 So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. :Chapter 21 פרק כא: .5 Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a יד ַו ַיּ ְשׁ ֵכּם ַא ְב ָר ָהם ַבּ ֹבּ ֶקר ַו ִיּ ַקּח ֶל ֶחם skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on ְו ֵח ַמת ַמ ִים ַו ִיּ ֵתּן ֶאל ָה ָגר ָשׂם ַעל her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She ִשׁ ְכ ָמהּ ְו ֶאת ַה ֶיּ ֶלד ַו ְי ַשׁ ְלּ ֶח ָה ַו ֵתּ ֶל ַו ֵתּ ַתע went on her way and wandered in the Desert of ְבּ ִמ ְד ַבּר ְבּ ֵאר ָשׁ ַבע .טו ַו ִיּ ְכלוּ ַה ַמּ ִים ִמן .Beersheba ַה ֵח ֶמת ַו ַתּ ְשׁ ֵל ֶאת ַה ֶיּ ֶלד ַתּ ַחת ַא ַחד When the water in the skin was gone, she put the 15 ַה ִשּׂ י ִחם .טז ַו ֵתּ ֶל ַו ֵתּ ֶשׁב ָלהּ ִמ ֶנּ ֶגד .boy under one of the bushes ַה ְר ֵחק ִכּ ְמ ַט ֲח ֵוי ֶק ֶשׁת ִכּי ָא ְמ ָרה ַאל Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot 16 ֶא ְר ֶאה ְבּמוֹת ַה ָיּ ֶלד ַו ֵתּ ֶשׁב ִמ ֶנּ ֶגד ַו ִתּ ָשּׂא ֶאת ֹק ָלהּ ַו ֵתּ ְב ְךּ יז ַו ִיּ ְשׁ ַמע ֱא ִהים ֶאת . away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” קוֹל ַה ַנּ ַער ַו ִיּ ְק ָרא ַמ ְל ַא ֱא ִהים ֶאל And as she sat there, she began to sob. ָה ָגר ִמן ַה ָשּׁ ַמ ִים ַויֹּא ֶמר ָלהּ ַמה ָלּ 17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God ָה ָגר ַאל ִתּי ְר ִאי ִכּי ָשׁ ַמע ֱא ִהים ֶאל called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is קוֹל ַה ַנּ ַער ַבּ ֲא ֶשׁר הוּא ָשׁם .יח קוּ ִמי the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard ְשׂ ִאי ֶאת ַה ַנּ ַער ְו ַה ֲח ִזי ִקי ֶאת ָי ֵד בּוֹ ִכּי the boy crying as he lies there. ְלגוֹי ָגּדוֹל ֲא ִשׂי ֶמנּוּ .יט ַו ִיּ ְפ ַקח ֱא ִהים 2 Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will 18 ֶאת ֵעי ֶני ָה ַו ֵתּ ֶרא ְבּ ֵאר ָמ ִים ַו ֵתּ ֶל ”.make him into a great nation ַו ְתּ ַמ ֵלּא ֶאת ַה ֵח ֶמת ַמ ִים ַו ַתּ ְשׁ ְק ֶאת Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of 19 ַה ָנּ ַער .כ ַו ְי ִהי ֱא ִהים ֶאת ַה ַנּ ַער ַו ִיּ ְג ָדּל water. So she went and filled the skin with water and ַו ֵיּ ֶשׁב ַבּ ִמּ ְד ָבּ ר ַו ְי ִהי ֹר ֶבה .gave the boy a drink ַק ָשּׁת .כא ַו ֵיּ ֶשׁב ְבּ ִמ ְד ַבּר ָפּא ָרן ַו ִתּ ַקּח לוֹ God was with the boy as he grew up.
