English 3354 Contemporary American Fiction Fall 2012 W. Lawrence Hogue English 3354 Contemporary American Fiction Fall 2012 W. Lawrence Hogue Contemporary American Fiction will be examined within the context of an emerging postmodern American society. Since the 1960s, a new phenomenon of American social reality has emerged. The emergent forms of a new commercial culture, the rise of computer and information networks, the mechanization of culture, the mediation of culture by the media, the shift from print literacy to images, urbanization, the absence of meta-narratives, and the co-existence of diverse cultures, races, and religions are all features of this new American society. We have diverse urbanization coinciding with the proliferation and extension of mass culture. This is a pregnant moment in the United States because you have the racial, religious, and cultural pluralization of institutions and practices and thus the creation of an image of the United States as a newly heterogeneous society. Within the span of the semester, we will hear as many of these diverse voices and examine as many of the literary trends as possible. We will read texts written mostly after 1980. The readings will be taken from the following texts: Paul Auster’s The New York Trilogy, Don DeLillo’s White Noise, Louise Erdrich’s Love Medicine, Percival Everett’s Erasure, Aimee Bender’s The Girl in the Flammable Skirt, Darcey Steinke’s Jesus Saves, Rikki Ducornet’s The Jade Cabinet, Richard Powers’s Gain, Andrew X Pham’s Catfish and Mandala, Carole Maso’s Ava, Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club, David Foster Wallace’s Brief Interviews With Hideous Men, A. M. Homes’s Music For Torching, Brian Evenson’s Fugue State, Lance Olsen’s 10.01, and George Saunders’s In Persuasion Nation. Requirements include a short paper, a mid-term exam and a final exam. .

    humanities Article The Bounds of Narrative in Don DeLillo’s Underworld: Action and the Ecology of Mimêsis Andrew Bowie Hagan Independent Scholar, Atlanta, GA 30309, USA; [email protected] Abstract: The interrelationship of natural and cultural history in Don DeLillo’s Underworld presents an ecology of mimesis. If, as Timothy Morton argues, ecological thought can be understood as a “mesh of interconnection,” DeLillo’s novel studies the interpretation of connection. Underworld situates its action in the Cold War era. DeLillo’s formal techniques examine the tropes of paranoia, containment, excess, and waste peculiar to the history of the Cold War. Parataxis and free-indirect discourse emphasize the contexts of reference in the novel, illustrating how hermeneutics informs the significance of boundaries. DeLillo’s use of parataxis exemplifies the conditions that propose and limit metaphor’s reference to reality, conditions that offer the terms for meaningful action. I utilize Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics to demonstrate how Underworld situates the reference to reality in its temporal and narrative condition. The historical situation of the novel’s narrative structure allows DeLillo to interrogate the role of discourse in producing and interpreting connection. Underworld offers layers of significance; the reader’s engagement with the novel’s discourse reaffirms the conditions of a meaningful relationship with reality in the pertinence of a metaphor. A famosa frase de Derrida “Não há nada além do texto” (1976, p. 158) ilustra a noção de que tudo pode ser visto como uma narrativa. Em vista disso, aspectos importantes para a escrita do nativo americano como o mito e a identidade tornam-se apenas construções, o que enfraquece a reinvindicação por uma política indígena. O conto de Leslie Silko “YellowWoman” é capaz de corroborar com um ponto de vista deconstrutivista quando reconstrói uma lenda tradicional no presente; ao mesmo tempo em que também afirma a identidade do nativo americano, o que reforça a necessidade de reconstruir e reposicionar a representação do indígena como pertencente a uma história de tradições. As a consequence, important issues to Native American writing such as myth and identity become only constructions, which weakens their claim for Native American politics. Leslie Silko‟s short story “Yellow Woman” manages to agree with a deconstructionism point of view when it reconstructs a traditional folktale in the present; at the same time, it also affirms a Native American identity, which reinforces the need to reconstruct and reposition an indigenous representation as belonging to a history of traditions.

Carl Jung The last few decades in American literature have seen the emergence of discourses that actively engage with environmental issues implying the need for a return to a spiritually informed way of life which restores the forgotten relations between human beings and the natural world. While these discourses of eco-criticism share a basic concern for environmental degradation and the ways to effect damage control and a healing of nature, they also differ in their evaluations of the relationship between the human and the natural world and in the ways goals and strategies are perceived. A number of US literary works written since 1980, such as John Cheever’s Oh What A Paradise It Seems, John DeLillo’s White Noise, and John Updike’s Rabbit At Rest articulate mainstream concerns and ideas about the environment and reflect what Cynthia Dietering terms a “toxic consciousness,” which sees the US as “post-natural” wasteland. (Adamson 56) A more politically oriented discourse which probes the connection between environ- mental degradation and class and race distinctions has emerged with what Joni Adamson calls “literature of environmental justice,” defined by the works of writers such as Leslie Mormon Silko, Louise Erdrich, Simon Ortiz, Linda Hogan, Alice Walker, and Ana Castillo, to mention just a few. These writers examine experiences of environmental racism, a term that gained currency in the debates on the environment in 1987 when the United Church of Christ’s Commission for Radical Justice published a report that found race to be the main factor in the location of toxic waste facilities (Adamson 129).

McClure Twentieth-century literature and theory have offered no shortage of challenges to the unity of personal identity. What these undertakings leave largely unquestioned, however, is the prevailing understanding that personal identity is sealed within the confines of the physical body—the final uncontested frontier of Cartesian identity. Emerging from a matrix of recent American literature—by Don DeLillo, Charles Johnson, Tony Kushner, Toni Morrison, among others—is a counter-argument to the notion that the materially bounded self is separate from other such selves in space. For the “individual” to take shape as such, it must locate itself within a specific social identity, disavowing its connection with those who identify themselves differently: a process, these texts suggest, that can unleash racial and ideological violence. My dissertation explores six late twentieth-century American novels and plays (1982 to 1998) that both dramatize this violent process and propose an alternative through images of humans dislocated from their bodies and fusing metaphysically with other open selves across space.
