humanities Article The Bounds of Narrative in Don DeLillo’s Underworld: Action and the Ecology of Mimêsis Andrew Bowie Hagan Independent Scholar, Atlanta, GA 30309, USA; [email protected] Abstract: The interrelationship of natural and cultural history in Don DeLillo’s Underworld presents an ecology of mimesis. If, as Timothy Morton argues, ecological thought can be understood as a “mesh of interconnection,” DeLillo’s novel studies the interpretation of connection. Underworld situates its action in the Cold War era. DeLillo’s formal techniques examine the tropes of paranoia, containment, excess, and waste peculiar to the history of the Cold War. Parataxis and free-indirect discourse emphasize the contexts of reference in the novel, illustrating how hermeneutics informs the significance of boundaries. DeLillo’s use of parataxis exemplifies the conditions that propose and limit metaphor’s reference to reality, conditions that offer the terms for meaningful action. I utilize Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics to demonstrate how Underworld situates the reference to reality in its temporal and narrative condition. The historical situation of the novel’s narrative structure allows DeLillo to interrogate the role of discourse in producing and interpreting connection. Underworld offers layers of significance; the reader’s engagement with the novel’s discourse reaffirms the conditions of a meaningful relationship with reality in the pertinence of a metaphor. Questions also arise over the compatibility between the largely secularized European social order and the traditions of Islamic law and politics. But substantial Muslim populations have, in fact, made their home in European countries for many years already: for decades in many parts of Western Europe, and for centuries in other places such as Russia and the Balkan territories of Kosova, Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Turkey's desire to gain admission to the EU raises the prospect of a large, predominantly Muslim state -- albeit one with its own distinctive historical relationship to Islam -- becoming a new part of "Europe." And in addition to these more recent concerns, many more Muslims once lived in other parts of Europe before being compelled to leave, as happened notably in Iberia after the Reconquista and in Greece in 1922. -

G. Ballard’s contention, that ‘the act of intercourse is now always a model for something else,’ to show that Don DeLillo uses a particular sexual, cultural economy of adultery, understood in its many loaded cultural and literary contexts, as a model for semantic reproduction. I contend that DeLillo’s fiction evinces a promiscuous model of language that structurally reflects the myth of the adulterous triangle. The thesis makes a significant intervention into DeLillo scholarship by challenging Paul Maltby’s suggestion that DeLillo’s linguistic model is Romantic and pure. My analysis of the narrative operations of adultery in his work reveals the alternative promiscuous model. I discuss ten DeLillo novels and one play – Americana, Players, The Names, White Noise, Libra, Mao II, Underworld, the play Valparaiso, The Body Artist, Cosmopolis, and the pseudonymous Amazons – that feature adultery narratives. -

(It's like a snore turned inside out.) Or is he intentionally irritating us, passive-aggressively wearing down his readers' resistance until we finally crack and agree with what he thinks and, more importantly, how he feels? How he felt in the 1990s was melancholy. The country was partying, but he was gnawing on a dry bone. He evokes his sunken condition with a litany of "d" Martin Peretz words: darkness, depression, despair ("My despair about the American Franklin Foer novel began in the winter of 1991..."). The good news delivered by How Leon Wieseltier to Be Alone for anyone who cares is that Franzen's downbeat mood has Peter Beinart more... begun to lift. No longer a miserabilist, Franzen has made a separate peace with the anachronistic calling of being a serious writer in America, a lighthouse keeper who refuses to desert his post. In the personal essays that make up his first collection (which includes a couple of straight reporting pieces to give the book some fiber content), Franzen fuses the roles of fiction writer, social commentator, and concerned citizen, qualifying earlier positions and making amends for being an impetuous hothead in his Shelleyan youth. -

I was recently in Scotland, While Europe Slept I read a newspaper story commenting on three hundred deserted churches dotting the Scottish countryside, asking if they should be destroyed or turned into bars and cafes. Europe herself, in her proposed constitution, refuses to acknowledge the heritage of Judaism and Christianity—although Greece and Rome and the Enlightenment are acknowledged. Europe cannot remember who she is unless she remembers that she is the child not only of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds and the Enlightenment but also of Judaism and Christianity—the child, therefore, of Catholicism and the Reformation. If Europe abandons her religious heritage, the idea of While Europe Slept dies. What does it portend? If a culture forgets what it is, as I While Europe Slept Europe has done, it falls first into an agnostic shrugging of the shoulders, unable to say exactly what it is and believes, and from there it will inevitably fall into nihilism. Detached from its religious foundations, Europe will not remain agnostic. Difference tells us nothing in and of itself. Some ways of life and ways of being in the world are brutal, stupid, and ugly. -

ACT UP Oral History Project 1 Interview of Dale Peck March 17, 2010 SARAH SCHULMAN: The way we start is you say your name, your age, today’s date, and where we are. DALE PECK: My name is Dale Peck. I am 42 years old. Today’s date is, I believe, March 17th, 2010. And we are in my living room. SS: Yes, in the beautiful East Village. DP: Yes. SS: You and I are like the last two artists who live here. DP: Yeah, yeah – SS: And yet we’re here. DP: – I don’t know what’s left in this building anymore. SS: So where were you born? DP: I was born on Long Island, in Bay Shore. SS: And where did you grow up? DP: I moved a lot. So I was on Long Island till I was three. Then we moved upstate, and we lived there for a year. My mother died. Then we moved back to the same house on Long Island. Two more quick marriages, and when the second one ended in divorce, we then moved, first to Colorado, for a little while; and then to far-western Kansas for a couple of years, where my father met his fourth wife. And then we moved to a town in central Kansas, called Hutchinson, where we stayed, albeit with several more moves through several more school districts, until I graduated from high school.
