    ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT OF RELIGIOUS ORDERS William A. Hinnebusch, O.P. The article is from a Journal: Review for Religious. It helps us to understand the CONTEXT of St Ignatius while founding the Society of Jesus. An attentive study of the origins and history of religious orders reveals that there are two primary currents in religious life--contemplative and apostolic. Vatican II gave clear expression to this fact when it called on the members of every community to "combine contemplation with apostolic love." It went on to say: "By the former they adhere to God in mind and heart; by the latter they strive to associate themselves with the work of redemption and to spread the Kingdom of God" (PC, 5). The orders founded before the 16th century, with the possible exception of the military orders, recognized clearly the contemplative element in their lives. Many of them, however, gave minimum recognition to the apostolic element, if we use the word "apostolic" in its present-day meaning, but not if we understand it as they did. In their thinking, the religious life was the Apostolic life. It reproduced and perpetuated the way of living learned by the Apostles from Christ and taught by them to the primitive Church of Jerusalem. Since it was lived by the "Twelve," the Apostolic life included preaching and the other works of the ministry. The passage describing the choice of the seven deacons in the Acts of the Apostles clearly delineates the double element in the Apostolic life and underlines the contemplative spirit of the Apostles.

LXIV - 1995 Chantal Reynier - Paris [English Translation: Ann Hermans] ROME Via dei Penitenzieri, 20 1995 INTRODUCTION The majority of the correspondence between Thaddhee Brzozowski (1749- 1820), General of the Order of the Society of Jesus, and Father Pierre-Joseph de Clorivière (1735-1820), a French Jesuit, is conserved in the Archivum Romanum Societatis Jesu in Rome. It consists of forty letters (17 by Brzozowski and 23 by Clorivière) and it covers the period of 1814-1818).1 The first letter of this collection is dated May 7, 1814 and is written by Brzozowski. In it he charges de Clorivière to reestablish the Order in France. The last, written by de Clorivière, is dated May 23, 1818. In it he thanks the General for relieving him of this task. There are, however, gaps in this collection. For instance, the first letter of de Clorivière that was conserved is dated September 16, 1815, more than a year after his appointment. Yet there had already been an exchange of letters, because in his letter of August 30, 1814, Brzozowski mentions several by Clorivière dating from April and July 1814. There are no letters of Brzozowski for the year 1815. However, during the 1816-1817 period, the correspondence that came down to us, is nearly complete. This correspondence is the one most cited by Terrien 2 in his writings on Clorivière, and it is used by Burnichon in his first volume on the history of the Order 3.

W HISTORY OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES Bernadette Soubirous (St. Bernadette) At the age of fourteen, on 11 February 1858, while gathering firewood with her sister Marie and a friend near the grotto of Massabielle, Bernadette Soubirous experienced her first vision. This was the first of eighteen visions of what she referred to as aquero, Gascon Occitan for "that.” In later testimony, she called it "a small young lady" (uo petito damizelo). The other children accompanying Bernadette stated that they had seen nothing. Although the townspeople who believed she was telling the truth assumed she saw the Virgin Mary, Bernadette never claimed it to be Mary. On 25 February, Bernadette reported that the lady had told her to drink of the water of the spring, to wash in it and to eat the herb that grew there as an act of penance. To everyone's surprise, the next day the grotto was no longer muddy, but flowed with clear water.

Mudd Cincinnati, Ohio August 2021 Abstract French missionary priests of religious orders experienced, during their work in the antebellum United States, a tension between independence and obedience. Separated by time and distance from their superiors in France, missionaries were forced to make decisions that would ordinarily require the approval of a religious superior. They could only then wait to hear whether their actions were approved or disapproved of by their community in France. The first members of the Fathers of Mercy, who came to the United States in 1839, are a prime example of this. Due to the lack of any secondary sources studying the Fathers of Mercy in this light, much less any overarching synthetic history of the Congregation as a whole, the research for this has consulted primary sources in the form of letters of different Fathers of Mercy and American prelates. Secondary sources which contained mention of the Fathers of Mercy and the apostolates they undertook in their first five years in the United States were generally diocesan histories or biographies of American prelates. These provided valuable information and tended to fill in gaps left by the letters themselves. The primary example of the tension between independence and obedience experienced by the Fathers of Mercy was in the acquisition of Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama.
