The program aims to further improve and enrich the education and research capability of Japan’s graduate schools and foster internationally outstanding, creative individuals through a research infrastructure of the highest global standard, promoting the devel- opment of internationally competitive universities. The establishment of the Global COE Program was based on the assessment and evaluation of the 21st Century COE Program. In 2007, Kyoto University was hon- ored with totally six COEs. Institute for Chemical Research is now making a great contribution to two of them, “International Center for Integrated Research and Advanced Education in Materials Science” and “Center of Excellence for Education and Research on Photonics and Electronics Science and Engineering”, as one of the main constituents.
