  • Additions, Deletions and Corrections to the Staphylinidae in the Irish Coleoptera Annotated List, with a Revised Check-List of Irish Species
Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society Number 41 (2017) ADDITIONS, DELETIONS AND CORRECTIONS TO THE STAPHYLINIDAE IN THE IRISH COLEOPTERA ANNOTATED LIST, WITH A REVISED CHECK-LIST OF IRISH SPECIES Jervis A. Good1 and Roy Anderson2 1Glinny, Riverstick, Co. Cork, Republic of Ireland. e-mail: <[email protected]> 21 Belvoirview Park, Belfast BT8 7BL, Northern Ireland. e-mail: <[email protected]> Abstract Since the 1997 Irish Coleoptera – a revised and annotated list, 59 species of Staphylinidae have been added to the Irish list, 11 species confirmed, a number have been deleted or require to be deleted, and the status of some species and names require correction. Notes are provided on the deletion, correction or status of 63 species, and a revised check-list of 710 species is provided with a generic index. Species listed, or not listed, as Irish in the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera (2nd edition), in comparison with this list, are discussed. The Irish status of Gabrius sexualis Smetana, 1954 is questioned, although it is retained on the list awaiting further investgation. Key words: Staphylinidae, check-list, Irish Coleoptera, Gabrius sexualis. Introduction The Staphylinidae (rove-beetles) comprise the largest family of beetles in Ireland (with 621 species originally recorded by Anderson, Nash and O’Connor (1997)) and in the world (with 55,440 species cited by Grebennikov and Newton (2009)). Since the publication in 1997 of Irish Coleoptera - a revised and annotated list by Anderson, Nash and O’Connor, there have been a large number of additions (59 species), confirmation of the presence of several species based on doubtful old records, a number of deletions and corrections, and significant nomenclatural and taxonomic changes to the list of Irish Staphylinidae.

Among them four are new to Italy: Atheta alpigrada, A. reissi, Schistoglossa pseudogemina and Cypha carinthiaca. They are discussed with further 19 species considered relevant for rarity and geographic distribution. The biogeographic analysis shows a prevalence of widely distributed species. Among those with restricted distribution some are characteristic for the Rhaetian Alps, others point out the importance of the Adige river valley as a biogeographic barrier. Some southern Keywords: Staphylinidae, species occur in thermophilous forests and in wetlands. The presence of rare species faunistics, new records, Alps, in protected areas, mostly in “Sites of Community Importance”, is evidenced. Trentino, Italy Introduction The aim of this work is the publication of a large amount of data on rove beetles (Sta- phylinidae), the largest family of Coleoptera (more than 60,000 species described up to date), collected by the author in Val di Non since the sixties of the past century. Year after year, I tried to sample every kind of macro- and microhabitat occurring in that area, with the aim of representing the diversity in this particular valley, which connects the Rhaetian and Dolomitic areas from west to east, and the metamorphic Central Alps and the carbonatic Prealps from north to south.

TGTTENHAM COLEOPTERA Family STAPHYLINIDAE By THE REV. C. E. TOTTENHAM. INTRODUCTORY. THE family Staphylinid.ae contains in the British Isles about 950 species, that is to say about one-quarter of the total number of Coleoptera occurring in the country. It is one of the most neglected families and consequently offers great scope for those who wish to do some useful work in addition to just forming a collection. The beginner can feel that he can immediately accomplish something. Records of species from all districts are badly needed; large numbers of even the commonest species have never been fully described ; the description, with figures, of the aedeagus in the male and, where it exists, of the spermatheca in the female, yet remains to be done in the case of more than half of the British species ; a comparative study of the apical abdominal segments of genera and species is an important task yet to be undertaken; many of the larvae have never been described and the life histories and habits of many species are as yet unknown.

  • Beiträge Zur Kenntnis Der Käferfauna Des Burgenlandes
Herrn Professor Dr. Helmut G o. m anläßlich seines 70. Geburtstages ge widmet.

  • Dorset Beetle Checklist
THE BEETLES of DORSET An annotated checklist Adrian Mylward A note on using the checklist: The checklist runs to over 150 pages. It has not been designed to be printed but species can be found by using Control F to open the Search box. You can then type in part/all of a species name to find a summary of Dorset records. Cover image: Cylindera germanica Cliff Tiger Beetle © Bryan Edwards The Beetles of Dorset (Vice-county 9) In his History of Glanvilles Wootton of 1878 C.W. Dale included records of 920 species of Coleoptera, the vast majority of which were from the neighbourhood of his home there. Then in 1926, at the age of 23, E.J. Pearce published A List of the Coleoptera of Dorset. Pearce pulled together the efforts of many recorders, and he subsequently added three supplements, in 1927, 1929, and 1931, ‘bringing the grand total to date up to 2149 species and varieties’. Unlike Dale, who spent most of his life at Glanvilles Wootton, Pearce did not remain in the county. His 1957 Royal Entomological Society handbook on the Pselaphidae (now a subfamily of the beetle family Staphylinidae) is still much used today. The county list below, containing 2653 species, is the first since that of Pearce. Its design is deliberately simple, to enable it to be easily updated at a time of frequent new discoveries and continual changes in nomenclature. It is published online and the hope is that it will be updated annually. The nomenclature follows the Checklist of Beetles of the British Isles (Duff, A.G.

  • Staphylinoidea, Staphylinidae (Coleoptera)*
SYSTEMATIC CATALOGUE OF THE ENTOMOFAUNA OF THE MADEIRA ARCHIPELAGO AND SELVAGENS ISLANDS STAPHYLINOIDEA, STAPHYLINIDAE (COLEOPTERA)* Vol. II, Part 2 1 2 By VOLKER ASSING & MICHAEL SCHÜLKE With 59 figures ABSTRACT. Based on a revision of the relevant taxonomic and faunistic literature, as well as of previously published and unpublished material, a critical updated catalogue of the Staphylinidae of Madeira and the Selvagens is compiled. 25 species are deleted from the list of Madeiran Staphylinidae, 10 species are recorded from the archipelago for the first time. Seven new synonymies are proposed: Stenus brunneus Puthz, 1978 = S. maderensis Puthz, 1980, syn. n.; Pseudomedon obscurellus (Erichson, 1840) = Lithocharis brevipes Wollaston, 1860, syn. n.; Ocypus pedemontanus (Müller, 1924) = Staphylinus caroli Jarrige, 1943, syn. n.; Tasgius winkleri (Bernhauer, 1906) = Staphylinus maderae Jarrige, 1943, syn. n.; Quedius nigriceps Kraatz, 1857 = Q. nigriceps maderensis Smetana, 1963, syn. n.; Atheta immucronata Pace, 1999 = A. pseudolaticollis Erber & Hinterseher, 1992, syn. n., = A. atlantidum Smetana, 2004, syn. n. For all the species recorded from the archipelagos, the references are listed, additional (i. e. previously unpublished) records, if available, are reported, the distribution in the Atlantic Islands and elsewhere is summarised, and bionomic data are compiled. Disregarding 5 names of doubtful taxonomic status, a total of 210 species and subspecies are reported from the Madeiras, 198 of them from Madeira proper, 52 from Porto Santo, and 11 from the Desertas. Four species, two of them endemic, are recorded from the Selvagens. A zoogeographic analysis revealed that the Madeiran staphylinid fauna is characterised by a high proportion (30%) of endemic species; the remainder is composed mainly of species with West Palaearctic (25%), Cosmopolitan (18%), Holarctic (11%), Palaearctic (4%), and Western Mediterranean (4%) distributions.

  • Beetles Species List
BLACKMOORFOOT BEETLES Blackmoorfoot Reservoir is situated at the base of the Pennines c. 5.6 km SW of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire (GR: SE098127) at an elevation of 256 m a.s.l. Construction began on 1 May 1871 and the reservoir was filled to overflowing by 20 December 1876. As with most Victorian reservoirs, Blackmoorfoot was formed by damming a valley, but due to the topography, it was necessary to build two dam walls. The total cost of the reservoir was £260,549. The surface area of the reservoir is relatively large (c. 41 ha) but being situated at the base of the Pennines, and having a maximum depth of 12 m, there are no marginal or submerged plant communities (with the exception of small outcrops of Amphibious Bistort Persicaria amphibia along the west bank). Plantations of deciduous woodland (in which Rhododendron is dominant) fringe the west and east banks and there is a more extensive wooded area on the western half of the south bank. A small oak woodland (Orange Wood) lies immediately to the south of the reservoir and is included in the recording area. The bird life of the area has been documented since the 1950s, but it was not until the mid-1970s that other life-forms began to be scrutinised with any seriousness. Since this time a number of specialists have been invited to the reservoir with a view to identifying organisms within their specialisation. With the advent of the Recorder database it became possible to maintain records that were easily accessible and workable. It was therefore decided that a subsite approach would be the best way forward: 16 subsites were erected.
