Tokyo Suggested Itinerary Day 1 Akihabara Electric Town AM 9:00 You can get to Akihabara via Tokyo Metro or the JR Line. Korean products are excellent, but it might be interesting to see adorable products unique to Japan. Okachimachi, Ueno Zoo AM 11:00 Take the train to Okachimachi Station, and have okonomiyaki or sushi for lunch at a restaurant in Ameyoko. After lunch, visit Ueno Zoo, the oldest zoo in Japan. Asakusa PM 3:00 You can reach Asakusa from Ueno on foot and by Tokyo Metro. At Asakusa, there are Nakamise Shopping Street and Senso-ji, where you can taste Japanese sweets like yokan and ningyo-yaki, as well as Italian food. Tokyo Skytree PM 6:00 When you walk out of Asakusa and cross the Sumida River, you will immediately arrive at Tokyo Skytree. At Tokyo Skytree, you can enjoy dinner while watching the night view. Day 2 Tokyo Disneyland AM 9:00 It is the best amusement park in Tokyo that opened 30 years ago. Enjoy a day filled with Disney characters, various rides, and delicious food. The parade that goes into the night brings out the childhood innocence and joy in everyone. Odaiba AM 11:00 While at Odaiba, visit places like the Oedo onsen (hot springs) and Venus Fort. At Oedo onsen, you can go to shops, enjoy a foot bath, and use the outdoor bath in yukata. At Venus Fort, you can buy games, character merchandises, and feel the atmosphere of European stores. Tokyo Metropolis (Tōkyō-to) of 13 mln people, crowded, colored, noisy, made of very freely designed buildings, with railway loop line separating the inner center from the outer center – from one side is similar to other large metropolises in Japan, and from another – being a capitol and having the Imperial Palace as its symbolical center, is unique. This article discusses elements of urbanscape, such as transportation infrastructure – roads and railways; junctions and city centers – neighborhoods; urban interiors – streets and squares; border lines and belts – rivers, parks; do- minant urban structures, outstanding elements – landmarks, and characteristic sights, that contrib- ute to aesthetic appeal of the landscape of Tokyo. The conclusion is that although both European cities and Tokyo have well-functioning centers, as well as sub-centers of the polycentric metropo- lises, their forms are differing because they reflect local urban planning, aesthetics, and culture. Financing Urban Park Management with Private Sector Participation The case of Ueno Park in Tokyo Japan Project Brief Background and Objectives Urban parks can be considered as important social capital not only for the quality of life but also economic productivity in highly built-up cities. They actually bring a variety of social and economic benefits to cities, such as disaster prevention, scenic landscape, recreation spaces, and human interactions. In Japan, “parks” were identified for the first time as “the place people enjoy themselves with others” by a Cabinet decree of 1873, whereby an enormous amount of land from former temples and shrines was taken over and converted into public parks. However, since there were no laws stipulating park management, the designated public spaces were misused and occupied by irrelevant buildings, such as houses, schools, and shops. To improve urban amenity and public welfare, the national government promulgated the Urban Park Act of 1956 that prescribed the standards and regulations for the establishment and management of urban parks, which includes building-to-land ratio of park facilities, regulations on permission for establishment and management of park facilities, and regulations on objects for exclusive use. Following this, the total urban park area has consistently been increasing from 14,388 ha with 4,511 parks in 1960, to 122,839 ha with 105,744 parks in 20161. In the 1990s, the public need for safe, clean and comfortable urban parks increased as an element of safe and livable cities, while problems such as deterioration of park management quality and aging park facilities were pointed out.

The pleasantness is stunning, and while you first notice it in the professional and gracious crew, it is not because of them. It is because of the high ratio of Japanese pas- sengers. An ancient culture of conformity, respect and ritual has begotten a modern culture of people who are unusually respectful, orderly and polite. There’s even an animated in flight video on JAL, demonstrating good flight etiquette, in- Tcluding things we’ve never done, like alerting the passenger behind you before reclining your seat. It sure makes for a pleasant cabin (as did the extra humidity and oxygen of the air on our 787 Dreamliner — that’s another story). But these same cultural forces are the ones that stunt the liberation of the Japanese LGBT community. They are at the heart of every internal Japanese conflict, an amplified expression of the conflict we all experience between holding on to the past, and growing into the future. It shouldn’t seem so foreign to us. But it does. And that’s the heart of any Japanese adventure. From its earliest interactions with Dutch and Portuguese traders, Japan has kept foreigners at a distance. And yet its rituals of hospitality are unrivaled in their intricacy and graciousness. For western travelers, a visit to Japan opens windows to both the past and the future. This is easily visible in the juxtaposition of tourist staples like tea ceremonies and bullet trains.
