parkscanada.gc.ca parcscanada.gc.ca Parks Canada’s 2014 1864 Charlottetown Conference Poster Contest ELIGIBILITY: Individual students in grades 6 to 8 or individuals between 11 and 14 years, living in Prince Edward Island are invited to enter this Poster contest! POSTER CONTEST INSTRUCTIONS The poster content must reflect an aspect of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference. The poster’s content should indicate that research was done about the Conference. The poster should be created using a minimum of 3 colours. Titles or short sentences are permitted, to a maximum of 10-15 words. The poster image must be created horizontally on the paper. The poster should be two dimensional (flat surface), using various mediums the artist desires, e.g. crayon, paint, pastels, etc., or combination thereof. Original photographs and computer generated posters will not be accepted. Images from calendars, magazines, websites, etc. are not permitted. Exact duplication of photo images or artwork is not permitted. Only original artwork will be accepted. IDEAS for POSTER THEME: What factors contributed to the setting of the Charlottetown Conference? Location, time, historical elements, landscape, Show how PEI fit into the debate on Confederation and what elements contributed to the outcome in 1867 and later in 1873. What were the arguments for and against Confederation? Who were the major players on each side? How has Confederation contributed to life as we know it on PEI? What role did the famous ball and other social events play during the Charlottetown Conference? SOURCES FOR RESEARCH: Parks Canada’s website- www.parkscanada.gc.ca is an excellent source for information. Specific information about Province House National Historic Site and the Charlottetown Conference can be accessed at www.parkscanada.gc.ca/provincehouse. DIMENSIONS: 43cm x 53 cm (17” x 21”) to a maximum of 45cm x 63cm (18” x 24”). A 2.5cm (1 inch) blank border around the outside of the poster must be present (this border may be within the 17” x 21” or 18” x 24” dimensions). parkscanada.gc.ca parcscanada.gc.ca PRIZES: 1) Class or Group Prize The grand prize winning class or organized youth group (E.G. Girl Guide or Scout Unit) will receive a special drawing class with Maurice Bernard, along with the materials to produce charcoal drawings of Province House National Historic Site. Note: A French speaking artist can be engaged upon request. 2) Individual Prizes The individual Grand Prize Winners will receive a free weekend of camping in PEI National Park and 1 week of park entry. The 2 & 3rd place individual winners will receive a family day pass to PEI National Park and a special invitation to the interpretive program of their choice. In addition to these prizes, all winners will receive a Province House book, a set of Father of Confederation Collector Cards and a poster print of the famous photo of the Fathers of Confederation on the steps of Fanningbank during the Charlottetown Conference. JUDGING CRITERIA & SELECTION OF WINNERS Posters will be selected by a panel of judges who will evaluate works on artistic merit, content (including relevance to chosen theme), and originality. Winners will be notified by mail or phone; prize tickets will be mailed to each winning individual, group or class. INFORMATION REQUIRED: On the back of each poster and essay, please tape a typed sheet of paper clearly indicating the student name; the teacher’s name and email address; and the school’s name, address and phone number. Also on this sheet, please have the students provide a short explanation (4-5 sentences) as to why they decided to include particular images in their poster. INTENT: To publish the winning posters on the Parks Canada website. COPYRIGHT: All poster submissions will remain the property of Parks Canada with full credit and recognition of the student and their school, or group.
