Hinds Direc- Dick Gould at Stanford tor of Men’s Tenis, has proven himself to be one of the top •Overall Record (33 seasons): collegiate tennis coaches in the nation. Gould was honored by 711-129 (.846) Wilson Sporting Goods and the ITA as “Coach of the Decade” •All-time Division I men’s tennis in men’s collegiate tennis for both the 1980s and 1990’s. The win leader award is fitting as Gould’s Stanford teams captured six NCAA •ITA/Wilson Intercollegiate Coach team titles in both the 80’s and 90’s. Gould has won a total of of the Decade: 1980s, 1990s 17 NCAA team titles during his 34-plus years as the Cardinal •Seventeen NCAA Team Champions: mentor. 1973, ’74, ’77, ’78, ’80, ’81, Gould also reached another prestigious milestone this ’83, ’86, ’88, ’89, ’90, ’92, season when he became the Division I men’s tennis all-time ’95, ’96, ’97, ‘98, 2000 career victory leader. John Whitlinger Men’s Tennis Associate Head Coach 1974 NCAA Singles & Doubles Champion John Whitlinger Honors John Whitlinger, a two-time All-American at Stanford, who has established •ITA Collegiate Men’s Tennis himself as one of the nation’s top collegiate coaches, is now in his 15th season Hall of Fame: 1999 as the associate to Dick Gould. During his tenure, the Cardinal has posted a •Fox River Valley (Wisconsin) 351-45 (.886) record and won nine NCAA team titles. One of the nation’s top Tennis Hall of Fame: 1998 teaching professionals, Whitlinger is co-director of the famous Stanford Tennis •ITA Assistant Coach of the School. He was awarded the inaugural National ITA Assistant Coach of the Year: 1997 Year in 1997 and was inducted into the ITA Collegiate Hall of Fame in 1999. •Stanford Hall of Fame: 1974 “John has been instrumental in helping Stanford continue its national •NCAA Singles Champion: 1974 success,” Stanford head coach Dick Gould said. “We are blessed to have a •NCAA Doubles Champion: 1974 coach of John’s caliber associated with Stanford. He is without question one of the top coaches in the world.” As an athlete, Whitlinger helped lead Stanford to its first two NCAA Championships in men’s tennis in 1973 and 1974. In 1974, he won the NCAA Singles Championship, teamed with Jim Delaney to win the NCAA Doubles Championship, and helped lead Stanford to the NCAA Team Championship. Whitlinger, a member of Stanford’s Athletic Hall of Fame, earned All-America honors in both 1974 and 1975. After his collegiate career, Whitlinger was an international touring professional for six years and was ranked among the world’s top 50 in singles and top 40 in doubles. He also played for the Indiana Loves of the World Team Tennis League.
