Mortimer (five in 1900) and Rick Neuheisel (five in 1995) won as many or more to open their CU careers (and Dorrell was OC on Neuheisel’s staff). Dorrell was the sixth CU coach to open 3-0 in conference games, but the first since Jim Yeager in 1941. ► On Dec. 22, he was named the Pac-12’s Coach of the Year (presented by Nextiva), the sixth coach to be recognized throughout CU’s history with the honor. ► Of the 23 new head coaches in 2020, he was the last of the group who was undefeated come Dec. 6. ► He is the third CU head coach to lead the Buffs to a bowl game in his first season, joining Neuheisel (’96 Cotton) and Gary Barnett (’99 Insight.com). ► He is the first CU coach in his first season to have his team go from unranked to ranked (No. 21 AP, No. 22 USAT/Coaches on Dec. 6; No. 21 CFP on Dec. 8), leading a team that many prognosticators were saying would win maybe one if any games (the over/under in Vegas was 1½ wins). STAT(S) OF THE WEEK Third Down Dominance. The Buffaloes have done a 180 when it comes to third down defense in 2020. Last year, opponents converted at a 47.4 percent clip, which was 125th in the NCAA (or fifth-worst), which included a gaudy 41-of-65 on 3rd-&-4 or less (63.1 percent). This year, the enemy is just 25-of-74 overall (33.8 percent, 18th-best nationally), and just 7-of-20 in tries of one-to-four yards. The Buffs have recorded nine quarterback sacks on third downs as well, whereas the opponent has just one on CU signal callers. OLB Carson Wells has 3½ of those third down sacks, ILB Nate Landman three. OBSCURE NOTE OF THE WEEK Rice-Stanley Connection. True freshman WR Brenden Rice had an 81-yard punt return and a 61-yard reception for touchdowns in the 38-21 loss to Utah on Dec. 12; WR Dimitri Stanley had key blocks on both plays. So how ironic was it that Dimitri’s father, WR Walter Stanley was the last Buff to accomplish the same – scoring on 87- and 74-yard receptions and a 70-yard punt return in a 45-27 win over Texas Tech on Sept. 12, 1981 (the last CU player to score TDs receiving and on any kick return until Rice turned the trick).     December 26, 2020 BOWL SEASON NOTES The 2020-21 Bowl Season enters its sixth day, with seven games played so far… Friday saw one game played – a Buffalo 17-10 win over Marshall in the Camellia Bowl… the game marked the first Christmas-day bowl game to be played since the 2003 Hawaii Bowl… the win was the Bulls’ sixth victory of the season (6-1)… Today’s schedule features three matchups, as Louisiana and UTSA sQuare off in the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl (3:30 p.m. EST on ABC), Western Kentucky takes on Georgia State in the LendingTree Bowl (3:30 p.m. EST on ESPN), and Liberty faces Coastal Carolina in the FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl (7:30 p.m. EST on ESPN)… Three other bowls (Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl, Guaranteed Rate Bowl, Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl) originally scheduled for today were all canceled earlier… Bowl Season will culminate with the College Football Playoff National Championship, played in Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on January 11.
