4 GREETINGS FROM THE YMCA

Welcome and Good Evening,

It is with great pleasure that I greet all assembled here tonight in celebration of the YMCA of Greater Bergen County’s 50th Annual Sports Award Banquet.

The Y is a powerful association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side by side with our neighbors in our communities to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

Congratulations to tonight’s honorees and thank you for all that you do in your schools and communities. We recognize each of you for your personal and ath- letic achievements, and for instilling in each other a collective sense of what is right and what is good. These are values that you have learned while competing in sports, and values by which you have chosen to live.

Thank you to the members of the Sports Award Committee for their hard work and dedication in putting this event together. It is truly one of Bergen County’s premier events.

Finally, I would like to thank all the businesses, corporations and organizations participating in this year’s banquet that provided financial support for Y pro- grams that serve the greater Bergen County community.

Again, congratulations to all here tonight and best wishes for continued success.

Glenn MacAfee Interim CEO YMCA of Greater Bergen County

We count on the generosity of our members and partners to keep our doors open to whomever needs a place to go to help them be more healthy, confident, connected and secure. All proceeds from tonight’s event will provide programs such as child Annual care, camp and swim lessons to those in need. Support The Y would like to acknowledge and thank the following Foundation for their support through grants of Y Youth and Teen Development Programs. Campaign Oritani Bank Charitable Foundation

6 PERSON OF THE YEAR Victor Cruz

New York Giants star player Victor Cruz was born in Paterson in 1986, the son of Michael Walker, an African-American firefighter, and Puerto Rico–born Blanca Cruz. At Paterson Catholic High School, Cruz starred on the football field, as both a receiver and a kick returner. But poor college entrance exams denied him the chance at any scholarships. After graduating in 2004, Cruz enrolled at Bridgton Academy in Maine, where he boosted his academics and continued to play football.

Cruz enrolled at the University of Massachusetts in the fall of 2005. The football team redshirted him that season, but poor grades forced Cruz to leave the school and return to Paterson to regroup and take classes at a local community school. For Cruz, the year off proved to be a trying time. Tragedy struck when his father took his own life. His father’s death forced Cruz to take his own life more seriously.

That next fall, Cruz re-enrolled at UMass. On the field, Cruz turned him- self into one of the most acclaimed receivers in the program’s history and finished in the Top 10 in several career statistics even though he played just two seasons as a full-time team starter.

Cruz was signed as a rookie free agent by the on April 25, 2010. With injuries plaguing the Giants’ receivers at the start of the 2011 season, Cruz was thrust into the . For the regular season, Cruz led the club in receptions and set a club record in receiving yards. In the NFC title game against the , Cruz caught 10 balls for 142 yards. In XLVI, Cruz helped steer the Giants to victory over Tom Brady and the New England Patri- ots.

Even more than the club’s star , , Cruz proved to be one of the media darlings during the Giants’ Super Bowl run. He earned particular notice for his celebrated salsa touchdown dance, which he said he did in honor of his late grandmother. In June 2013, Cruz, who was fresh off his first Pro Bowl season, inked a five-year, $43 million contract extension with the Giants.

Cruz founded the Victor Cruz Foundation, which encourages youngsters to become physically and academically active and to stick with their goals. Recipient of a Daily Point of Light Award for his work with youth. He has participated in the NFL Characters Unite Documentary, which is a series that profiles NFL stars as they share deeply personal stories of overcoming prejudice, bullying and discrimination, with the goal of helping young people who are currently facing similar challenges. He continues to donate food and serve meals at an anti-poverty center in Paterson. Cruz is engaged to Elaina Watley and they have a daughter, Kennedy.
