Welcome and Good Evening,

It is with great pleasure that I greet all assembled here tonight in celebration of the YMCA of Greater Bergen County’s 53rd Annual Sports Award Banquet.

The Y is a powerful association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side by side with our neighbors in our communities to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

Congratulations to tonight’s honorees and thank you for all that you do in your schools and communities. We recognize each of you for your personal and ath- letic achievements, and for instilling in each other a collective sense of what is right and what is good. These are values that you have learned while competing in sports, and values by which you have chosen to live.

Thank you to the members of the Sports Award Committee for their hard work and dedication in putting this event together. It is truly one of Bergen County’s premier events.

6 PERSON OF THE YEAR Mark DeRosa

Mark DeRosa proudly grew up in Carlstadt, New Jersey and attended Bergen Catholic High School. He found those four years to be truly invaluable. Mark was named All-State in both football and baseball at Bergen Catholic and also led the 1992 Crusaders to the State Title in what was referred to as “The Game of the Century”!

Mark enrolled in The Wharton School at the University of Pennsyl- vania and played baseball for three years as well as starting as their for two years. He was then drafted in the 7th round of the 1996 draft by the .

He made his MLB debut on September 2, 1998 versus Randy John- son. DeRosa had a 14 year MLB career, playing for eight teams and amassed a .358 average in 22 postseason games. He also repre- sented Team USA in the 2009 World Baseball Classic and is a mem- ber of the 2010 World Champion .

Mark retired at the end of the 2013 season and has worked as an analyst for MLB Network since 2014. He is most grateful for his amazing family; wife Heidi and two beautiful kids, Gabby (14 yrs.) and Brooks (8 yrs.).
