The Diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire: Craneflies and Winter Gnats by Phil Brighton 32, Wadeson Way, Croft, Warrington WA3 7JS [email protected] Version 1.1 26 November 2017 1 Summary This document provides a new checklist for the craneflies and winter gnats (Tipuloidea, Ptychopteridae and Trichoceridae) to extend the lists of the diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire first published by Kidd and Bindle in 1959. Overall statistics on recording activity are given by decade and hectad. Checklists are presented for each of the three Watsonian vice-counties 58, 59, and 60 detailing for each species the number of records, year of earliest and most recent record, and the number of hectads with records. A combined checklist showing distribution by the three vice-counties is also included, covering a total of 264 species, amounting to 75% of the current British checklist. Introduction This report is the third in a series to update and extend the partial checklist of the diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire published in 1959 by Leonard Kidd and Alan Brindle1. There were two previous updates, in 19642 and 19713. The previous reports in this series cover the soldierflies and allies4 and the Sepsidae5, the latter family not having been covered in Ref 1. The reader is referred to the first two reports for the background and rationale of these checklists, as well as the history of diptera recording and available data sources. The description of methodology is also kept to a minimum in the present report: only significant differences from the previous publications will be outlined. -

Niiden avulla on mm. paljastettu kryptisiä lajeja, ja ne ovat mahdollistaneet myös hyvin kaukaisten organismien tutkimisen, mikä on ollut vaikeampaa pelkästään morfologisiin piirteisiin perustuen. Vaaksiaiset (Tipuloidea) ovat yksi kaksisiipisten (Diptera) lajirikkaimpia ryhmiä. Siitä huolimatta vaaksiaisista ei ole aiemmin tehty molekylaarisiin menetelmiin perustuvaa alemman tason sukupuututkimusta, eivätkä morfologiaan perustuvat tutkimukset ole antaneet täysin yksiselitteisiä tuloksia vaaksiaisten sukulaisuussuhteista. Neodiptera: New Insights Into the Adult Morphology and Higher Level Phylogeny of Diptera (Insecta)

With 24 figures Neodiptera: New insights into the adult morphology and higher level phylogeny of Diptera (Insecta) VERNER MICHELSEN Department of Entomology, <oological Museum, UniveniQ of Copenhagen, Universitetsparh 15, DK-2100 Copenhagen, Denmark Recehd Decmber 1994, accepted for publication 3ub 1995 This paper outlines several aspects of the skeleto-muscular organization of the adult prothorax and cervix pertaining to the ground pattern of Diptera, which in turn leads to the characterization of Neodiptera, a higher level dipterous taxon which includes Brachycera and bibionomorph Nematocera (smu Hennig). The monophyly of Neodiptera is fdysupported by four skeleto-muscularmodifications of the pronoto-cervical region. The bibionomorph Nematocera are shown to be paraphyletic in terms of Brachycera. On more preliminary evidence it is argued that the fundamental dichotomy of the extant Diptera lies between a ‘polyneuran’ clade which includes Trichoceridae, Tipuloidea, Tanyderidae, and Ptychopteridae and an ‘oligoneuran’ clade which includes all the remaining groups. Preliminary evidence for a sister group relationship between Blephariceroidea and Culicomorpha is also provided. Certain an-lous setae on anopheline pupae are discussed and illustrated, and homologies are suggested for these setae within the Culicidae and with someother Nearatocera. INTRODUCTIO@i The pupal stage is a “neglected stage” for many mosquito collectors, and is of ten ignored in mosquito taxonomic studies, e.g., Wood et al. (1979). During taxonomic_ _ studies over the last 20 years we have examined thousands of pupae of AnopheZes Meigen from many regions of the world. With time it has become increasingly apparent that beside possessing supportive characters to be used with characters on other stages, the pupal stage frequently offers the best characters for differentiating many anopheline categories, e.g., series, species groups, and species (including sibling species). In this paper we present advantages/disadvantages for collecting and using anopheline pupae in taxonomic studies. Also, certain abnormal or anomalous setae observed on anopheline pupae are discussed. Only a few early mosquito workers demonstrated an interest in the pupal stage of anophelines, e.g., Senevet (1930)) Chris tophers (1933), Baisas (1936)) Crawford (1938)) and they generated only minimal interest among their peers. -

E-mail: [email protected] Introduction The first list of Lithuanian Diptera was published in 1989 (Pakalniškis 1989) and included 1237 species. It was based on published data. Its preparation entailed an enormous amount of work to establish which of the localities in the border areas of Lithuania and mentioned in faunistic publications up to the Second World War are actually within the territory of presentday Lithuania. The second list of Lithuanian Diptera was published in 2000 (Pakalniškis et al. 2000). It included 2283 species. This list includes 3311 species of Lithuanian Diptera. The original idea of compiling the species list and of collecting together all the publications on the Lithuanian Diptera was that of the late Dr Saulius Pakalniškis. The infraorder Tipulomorpha has been compiled by Dr Sigitas Podėnas, the families Bolitophilidae, Ditomyiidae, Keroplatidae and Mycetophilidae by Dr Jolanta Rimšaitė, the families Psychodidae, Ceratopogonidae, Simuliidae, Chaoboridae and Dixidae by Dr Rasa Bernotienė, the superfamily Syrphoidea and family Tachinidae by Erikas Lutovinovas, and the families Trichoceridae, Fanniidae, Muscidae and Calliphoridae by Andrius Petrašiūnas. -
