Fernandez and Soldan Take Parapanam Glory The News Bulletin of the International Tennis Federation www.itftennis.com San Marino & Great Britain to host European Beach Tennis Championships Tennis Europe has confirmed the host nations for the next three European Beach Tennis Championships. The tournament, one of the highlights on the ITF Beach Tennis Tour, will move to San Marino in 2012, before Great Britain hosts the event in 2013-14. The two nations will be looking to build on the success of previous years which have seen Italy, Turkey and Bulgaria host the first four championships. The venue for the 2012 European Beach Tennis Championships is the IBS Beach Planet resort in San Marino, with the British venues still to be confirmed. I am sure that both venues will serve as a further boost to the explosive growth of beach tennis in Europe.” The European Beach Tennis Championships, organised by Tennis Europe, have formed part of the ITF Beach Tennis Tour since 2008 and seen a steady growth in size and popularity. Fernandez and Soldan take Parapanam glory Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez and USA’s Mackenzie Soldan both secured qualification slots for the wheelchair tennis event at the London 2012 Paralympic Games after winning the men’s singles and women’s singles titles at the Parapanam Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Top seed Fernandez defeated defending champion Jon Rydberg (USA) 64 62 and 2007 Parapanam Games silver medallist Robinson Mendez (CHI) on his way to an all-Argentinean final, where he overcame Augustin Ledesma 62 62 to claim the gold medal. Former world No. 1 Stephen Welch (USA) secured the bronze medal after defeating Mendez 60 63. Soldan fought back from a set down to claim the gold medal from compatriot Emmy Kaiser 16 64 64, while Angelica Bernal (COL) clinched the bronze medal in the women’s singles following a 64 62 victory over Francisca Mardones (CHI). Rydberg and Welch defeated Fernandez and Ledesma 62 63 to win the men’s doubles and help USA to the top of the medal table, while Kaiser and Soldan defeated Bernal and Johana Martinez (COL) 63 60 to take the women’s doubles gold medal. The Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) said it took the decision after receiving new alerts from UEFA’s integrity office in recent months, despite fining Vereya over potential match manipulation in February. Vereyua finished sixth last season but are currently bottom of the league facing relegation. “The BFU received signals from UEFA for unregulated financing of Vereya by Chinese citizens associated with international trade unions for manipulation of football matches in Europe and the world, as well as citizens of the former CIS (the Commonwealth of Independent States of 11 ex-Soviet states) investigated for manipulation of football matches,” the BFU said in a statement.
