    Spotlight Ballet Rules* Ballet students who will be attending a dance program away from home and outside of Southern California during the Spotlight year and whose parent(s) still live in Southern California may participate in Spotlight as long as they attend auditions, rehearsal and final performance if advancing to Grand Finale Performance. Proof of study will be required from dance program. You may not be an apprentice or full time member of a professional ballet company and participate in Spotlight. What’s required of me for my Ballet Preliminary 1 video audition? All students begin with a Preliminary 1 video audition. Those scoring highest will advance to Preliminary 2 live auditions in February 2019. Those scoring highest after Preliminary 2 will advance to the Semifinals Please record yourself performing one solo from the required list below If selected to advance to Preliminary 2, you will perform two solos for your live audition. You can change your variations if you advance to Preliminary 2 In choosing a variation for your video recording, we encourage you to choose a solo that best reflects your current stage of technical and artistic abilities. The classical variations in this program span the most beloved scenes in the ballet world: Don Quixote, Raymonda, Giselle. You will also enjoy excerpts from both a luminary and a rising star in contemporary dance: Trey McIntyre returns with A Day in the Life and Aleix Mañé shares his ExiliO, which won our international Genesis competition. In this program, we also celebrate our friend Jimmy Gamonet, who passed earlier this year from COVID-19. Jimmy is most notable for his longtime tenure as Miami City Ballet’s founding resident choreographer and ballet master. In recent years, she has danced professionally with the Dance Theater of Harlem and has been a guest teacher at Yale University. Ginna is a company member and rehearsal director with Thomas/Ortiz Dance. She has been a teacher at New England Academy of Dance since 1996 and become co-director in 2003. Frances Ortiz (Co-Director) obtained a BFA from SUNY Purchase and a Masters in Dance Education from NYU. She received scholarships to the Dance Theater of Harlem, the Martha Graham School and the Alvin Ailey School. She has performed works by Kevin Wynn, Elisa Monte and Tim Martins among others. Her choreography has been showcased on PBS in City Arts. In 2002 Ms. Ortiz co-founded Thomas/Ortiz Dance with Ted Thomas. She is currently a teacher at Greenwich High School and the co-director of New England Academy of Dance. Ted Thomas (Associate Director) received his BFA from SUNY Purchase and his MA in Dance Education from NYU. He has performed with Ballet Hispanico, the Elise Monte Dance Company, The Paul Taylor Dance Company and the Nikolais/ Louis Dance Company. In 2002 Mr. Thomas co-founded Thomas/Ortiz with Frances Ortiz. This year he was awarded the 2018 Connecticut Fellow for Artistic Excellence in Ballet, Modern and Choreography.

His scores have been cited for their tunefulness, appropriateness for their narrative, and for their danceability. However, Delibes remains an obscure figure in music history, outside the musical canon of the nineteenth century. Likewise, his ballet music, whose harmonic resources are conventional and whose forms are variants of basic structures, has not received much scholarly and theoretical attention. This thesis addresses Delibes’s music by examining his ballet score for Coppélia, its support of narrative and also its support of dance. Chapter 1 begins with a historical view of ballet and ballet music up to the time of Delibes. Following a biographical sketch of the composer, a review of aspects of the score for Giselle by his mentor, Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) establishes a background upon which Delibes’s ballets can be considered.

Photography Lynette Wills 4 THE AUSTRALIAN BALLET 2019 SEASON NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Giselle has a special place in The Australian Ballet’s history, and has been a constant in our repertoire since the company’s earliest years. The superstars Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev danced it with us in 1964, in a production based on the Borovansky Ballet’s. Our founding artistic director, Peggy van Praagh, created her production in 1965; it premiered in Birmingham on the company’s first international tour, and won a Grand Prix for the best production staged in Paris that year. It went on to become one of the most frequently performed ballets in our repertoire. Peggy’s production came to a tragic end when the scenery was consumed by fire on our 1985 regional tour. The artistic director at the time, Maina Gielgud, created her own production a year later.
