JUDGMENT A. Opinion and Judgment of the United States Military Tribunal II * The indictment in this case contains three counts, which may be summarized as follows: Count One: War crimes, involving murder, slave labor, de- portation of civilian population for slave labor, cruel and inhuman treatment of foreign laborers, and the use of prisoners of war in war operations by force and compulsion. Count Two: War crimes, involving murder, subjecting involun- tary victims to low-pressure and freezing experiments resulting in torture and death. Count Three: Crimes against humanity, involving murder and the same unlawful acts specified in counts one and two against German nationals and nationals of other countries. For reasons of its own, the Tribunal will first consider counts two and one, in that order, followed by consideration of count three. COUNT TWO More in detail, this count alleges that the defendant was a principal in, accessory to, ordered, abetted, took a consenting part in and was connected with, plans and enterprises involving medi- cal experiments without the subjects' consent, in the course of which experiments, the defendant, with others, perpetrated mur- ders, brutalities, cruelties, tortures, and other inhuman acts. The so-called medical experiments consisted of placing the subject in an airtight chamber in which the air pressure is mechanically reduced so that it is comparable with the pressure to which an aviator is subjected at high altitudes, and in experimenting upon the effect of extreme dry and wet cold upon the human body. For these experiments inmates of the concentration camp at Dachau were selected. These inmates presented a motley group of pris- oners of war, dissenters from the philosophy of the National Socialist Party, Jews, both from Germany and the eastern coun- tries, rebellious or indifferent factory workers, displaced civilians from eastern occupied countries, and an undefined group known as "asocial or undesirable persons." * Concurring opinions were filed by Judge Musmanno, see PP, 737-869, and by Judge Phillips, see PP. -

19 Disintegration Doom did not descend on the Third Reich with a single blow. It struck at irregular intervals and shifted from one theatre to another. In between, there were moments of relief during which Speer, Goebbels and the rest did their best to rekindle the flame of fanatical belief. July 1943 had seen a nightmarish coincidence of setbacks on every front: in the air war, in Italy and at Kursk. In the East, the six months that followed brought a seemingly endless retreat. Nevertheless, by frantic manoeuvr- ing, Army Group South somehow managed to end 1943 still in control of the vital iron and metal ore deposits of the Ukraine. 1 This kept alive the hopes of the German war economy, at least for a few more months. Even in Italy, Mussolini's demise did not spell immediate calamity. Making best use of the impassable terrain and Allied caution, a modest Wehrmacht contingent of 20 divisions was able to stop the British 8th Army well short of Rome and to contain the under-strength American landing at Anzio. 2 Meanwhile, as the autumn wore on, the nightmare of Hamburg lifted. Instead of concentrating on industrial targets in western Germany, RAF bomber command exhausted itself in the per- verse attempt to 'win the war' by wrecking Berlin. 3 There were nights when British aim was good and terrible damage was done to the 'big city'. On 22 November 1943 Harris's bombers killed 3,500 people, left 400,000 homeless and scored direct hits on the administrative centre of German government, including the offices of Speer's Ministry and army procurement. -

Dann richten Sie bitte eine Anfrage an unsere Mail-Adresse: [email protected] Historische Todesanzeigen, die aus Anlaß des Ablebens von Adeligen aus deutschen Ländern der Jahre 1912 bis 2009 gedruckt worden sind, können als wertvolle Quellen für die Ahnenforschung, die Familienforschung, aber auch die wissenschaftliche Forschung, gelten. Die hier präsentierte Liste nimmt sich dieser bisher vernachlässigten Quellengruppe an und erschließt bibliographisch den Quellenbestand. Mithilfe dieses Register-Vorhabens wird jetzt dieser Massenbestand erschließbar gemacht. Denn weil im Gotha und seinen Nachfolgern nicht alle Familienstammfolgen und „Stammbäume“ erschienen sind, die der deutsche Adels aufzuweisen hat, bilden Todesanzeigen eine gute Ergänzung zu den Personaldaten des deutschen Adels an. Sterbedaten und auch die Namen von Hinterbliebenen lassen sich hierüber sehr gut ermitteln. Die hier präsentierten Register wurden zwischen November 2008 und April 2009 erstellt. Benötigt wurden dazu rund 126 Arbeitsstunden in der Kieler Landesbibliothek und entstanden sind dabei Register zu 19.228 Anzeigen, die aus verschiedenen deutschsprachigen Zeitschriften, Tages-, und Wochenzeitungen zusammengestellt worden sind.
